First truck project! 89 Silverado 5.7 350 V8!
5 Attachment(s)
Hey guys, im pretty new been posting in the regular section about some general questions. Well im going to start a build thread. It needs "Alot of small stuff" lol. So i figure you guys can help . I got some pictures (Bottom). I got it from my neighbor. Hes a older guy that got a new 07 silverado so he had the 89 parked in the backyard for 4-5 years. The problem with it was it ran for a little bit then cut of when the motor got warm. There is no rust, except for one cab corner that i took a picture of, its not a big deal. Its not bad. Me and my dad bought it for $1000. Its easy a $2000 truck but thats why im friends with my neighbor . Im not sure what im going to do with it, but i know its getting a cherry red or rose paint job (even the gril). Im putting cherry bombs so theres ALOT to come. Let me know what you guys think would look good. Thanks
What ive done: Shampoo Seat and Carpet Washed Fix the engine (he cut off $500 from the price and it turned out to be a $15 part lol) Adjusted the headlights ALOT of little things need to be done but i will try to keep you guys updated! |

Great project starter, until I saw the NE plate.
Local pick-a-part is where I'd look for that cap. |

Re: First truck project! 89 Silverado 5.7 350 V8!
Headers are always good the link below is what I put on my truck good price for long tube.
http://www.jegs.com/i/Hedman/500/69440/10002/-1 And some flowmasters woulndnt hurt:metal: |
Re: First truck project! 89 Silverado 5.7 350 V8!
I bought a set of stainless shorties from ebay for $122 shipped and they fit in place of stock manifolds.
|
Re: First truck project! 89 Silverado 5.7 350 V8!
Stainless is better they hold up longer, but I do like long tube performance
Flows are still cool either way:metal: |

agreed long tubes are great, and flows are good but cherry bomb extremes sound just as good and are cheaper, however the flowmaster 10's are stainless and they are only like $5-10 more a piece.
As for the rust on your radiator support, sand it down if you can and paint right away. That'll stop it or prolong the rust, maybe use some self etching primer first or epoxy primer, and if not maybe some undercoating or bed liner stuff? or just plain old brush on rustoleum. |
Re: First truck project! 89 Silverado 5.7 350 V8!
True, true, and true I really like the 44s i can find anything that sounds like them
i had it on my 94 before i went to duals. I put a 3'' 21" cherry bomb glass pack on with it later on it was nice flow sound that was extra deep. But i put thrust welded on when i went to duals, they are only like 25 or so the sound is close to 40s, people ask if they are 40s |

Re: First truck project! 89 Silverado 5.7 350 V8!
You might have clearance issues with long tube headers due to the manual tranny the clutch gets in the way on the passenger side, i had to bend my pipes a little id use shorties. Oh no another tapout fan...j/k

Re: First truck project! 89 Silverado 5.7 350 V8!
Good call Joe It didnt even cross my mind it was a stick
|
Re: First truck project! 89 Silverado 5.7 350 V8!
Yeah i learned the hard way. Got my long 'ens in the mail, took the stock manifolds off, and had to put them right back on! lol
|
Re: First truck project! 89 Silverado 5.7 350 V8!
buy long tubes that fit a stick shift. Most headers you buy say if they fit stick shift or auto only.
|
Re: First truck project! 89 Silverado 5.7 350 V8!
find me some long that say for manual, i had no luck. They all said auto only
I think your best bet is shorties that bolt to the factory y pipe, I could be wrong, Im no mechanic. |

True shorties would be best, and most do bolt to the y pipe, but i would get rid of the factory y pipe they kill hp. Ive seen 20hp gains from taking it off. Remember your exhaust is only as good as the worst flowing part |
Re: First truck project! 89 Silverado 5.7 350 V8!
yeah i did away with the y also

The thicker the flange the better, if you don't go with 3/8' flange I would think about these http://www.summitracing.com/parts/JEX-FLX3010B/
Nothings worst than spending all that money and 6 months later you have a warped or cracked header, plus for the price they look really cool. |
Re: First truck project! 89 Silverado 5.7 350 V8!
what i did was get a collector extension kit from jegs, have them bent like the stock pipes are and voila, true duals with no y pipe. But mine dump right where the bed starts. But if you want your pipes to exit by the bumper, you have to have them side by side cause of the tank.

Re: First truck project! 89 Silverado 5.7 350 V8!
no, i got these shorties http://www.summitracing.com/parts/BIG-11504FLT/
And then these and bent them how i wanted them http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS/555/30631/10002/-1 then welded my mufflers at the end of those with turndowns, it comes out right at the beginning of the bed though. Cheaper than a muffler shop, but i do all my own stuff. |

Re: First truck project! 89 Silverado 5.7 350 V8!
The ones I bought from ebay instainless for $122 shipped fit directly in place of the stock manifolds and the top side is a very thick flange has to be at least 3/8 or so. The collector is thick as well and as mentioned uses no gaskets it's ball end to fit in place of the stock manifolds and bolt to stock pipes without a donut gasket. I love em.

Re: First truck project! 89 Silverado 5.7 350 V8!
could you look those up for us?

Re: First truck project! 89 Silverado 5.7 350 V8!
I already did they are in my buid thread here, called 88 buildup on a tight budget or just go search ebay for the ones I had from tuning pros or 88 chevy truck headers, it aint hard.
I did it anyways took less then a minute... http://shop.ebay.com/i.html?_trkparm...&_sop=15&_sc=1 tons there... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/CHEVY...Q5fAccessories an auction for some just like mines.. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Chevy...Q5fAccessories That's the ones I bought and are now cheaper of course lol. my thread about halfway down this page is the headers and pics of them installed and such.. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...=376083&page=2 here's the other thread of mine with more pics including how thick they flange is and the ball end and how they discolored. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...=395994&page=2 |

Re: First truck project! 89 Silverado 5.7 350 V8!
I'm very happy with them, mine had duals and I didn't have a welder fo I didn't want to cut or weld anything, as for bolting thwem on not long. About as long as it'd take to remove the 3 lower bolts and the 6 upper bolts on each side, maybe a couple hours or so if that but mine had been off recently. If the manifolds aint been off might take a little longer. I removed all my plugs so I wouldn't drop one and break a plug, and that was the biggest PITA of the whole job putting the back 2 plugs in on either side. You need an offset 5/8 or short 5/8's socket made for plugs that let's you use a wrench on, but I got by with a regular box end 5/8 it just took some time.

Re: First truck project! 89 Silverado 5.7 350 V8!

I can post pics a little later when i get it done. Im using coke and rust stoppage black paint. Any one else have a better way? Thanks
