Our new 69C10 project
Here is the start of our build, My boys and I (13 & 11) flew from Oregon to Texas and bought his 69C10 from a fellow board member and drove it home over 6 days, it was the trip of a lifetime for us and worth the price of the truck, although my wife s not so sure of that after I started buying parts! Started out life as a 6 cly three speed SWB and now a Vortec350 with a 700R4, ECE drop and just finished the 307 Eaton posi, so she cruises down the road 70mph @ 1500rpm. Now off comes the body, we got a perfect rust free cab and doors at the soda blaster!

They are so into it, I get a call every time a part shows up to let me know what it is, The cab and doors were in worse shape than I expected, and the frame nneds some attention, but we found that cab with doors, it only had 37,000 original miles and there is not even a spot of rust anywhere, not even the doors, I couldnt believe it. She runs out nice the PO did a nice job on the drivetrain, it only has 2700 miles on it now. My 72 will be my 13 year olds first truck in a few years, we have been doing a little on it, not too nice but much nicer than anything I had when I was growing up.
|
Re: Our new 69C10 project
Hidden rust,,,, it's the worst! Keep up the good work. Thanks for the pics.
|
Re: Our new 69C10 project
That will make a great first truck for him. My son and I will be starting on my old 68 SWB as soon as I get my 72 done.
|
Re: Our new 69C10 project
I'm in. So awesome that your boys are involved. My 4 year old son made me thank the lord the other day when he said " daddy I want a old truck like yours... ...but with a big block." The wife said I have him brain washed. :)
Can't wait to see more of your truck. |
Re: Our new 69C10 project
You can't blame him for wanting a big block.

Just got the cab and doors out of the soda-blasters, now its on to PPG sealcoat and then in goes the box. Putter is going to do our cluster with all autometer pro-comp from Shon is in the works, so next week we tear down the old cab and front sheet metal and start on the frame.
|
Re: Our new 69C10 project
Did you do the soda blasting or someone else? Did it take it clear down to the metal?
|
Re: Our new 69C10 project
I had a local company sodablast.com do the work, its down to bare metal inside and out, they did a outstanding job, they also sell small soda blast equipment, but I had them do the cab, doors and fenders in their booth. They are local and great to work with www.soda-blast.com in tigard, Or.
|
Re: Our new 69C10 project
I bought a $400 soda blaster from Eastwood,,,,I'm not impressed,,,I'm glad you got good results.
|
Re: Our new 69C10 project
I had read up on soda blasting and considered buying a unit to clean up doors, etc. until I read about potential paint adhering problems afterwards. You have to do a really, really thorough job of cleaning the soda up off the metal afterwards. This includes seams where the soda will reside and be hardest to remove. Just mentioning, though you are prob. already aware. Otherwise looks like it cleaned up nice! Have fun with the build :metal:
|
Re: Our new 69C10 project
WOW...great looking sheet metal...what a way to start !!
|
Re: Our new 69C10 project
Thanks, the cab and doors were a complete score, of course now I have a complete bab, door, fenders and hood that I will have to sell when I am done, it has the typical rust but over all its a pretty nice set-up, and I already have the patch panels to go with it. Hopefully I can find a buyer her local, its off to the powdercaoter to see how the core support and inner fenderwells turned out

Re: Our new 69C10 project
Nice looking project. How is the 700R4, 3.07/posi for low end/stop light torque? 1500 rpm at 70 sounds nice. Wonder how a stock 396/402 would do with this combo?
|
Re: Our new 69C10 project
It has tons of low end, I actually have to watch the throttle to keep it from breaking loose, the 700R4 has been upgraded with corvette upgrades, so its a nice tight shift then smooth when it drops into overdrive, I think its the perfect combo. I was a bit hesitant to go with the 307, but my diff guy ran the numbers with the engine, trans and wheel size and said thats what it needed and he was right on.

OK, the boys and I got the bed, and all the front sheet metal off yesterday and now we are going to power wash the frame and take a good look at it, front sheet metal was pretty rusty, along with the core support and more of the cab that I had not seen, but the new cab is getting a coat of PPG sealer along with the doors this week I hope, put the bed on the trailer and off to get completly blasted, and its in exellent condition, trying to decide if I can work around the engine and trans in place, but my guess is I will pull them, which is a shame but the PO did`nt do much cleaning and prep so I dont want to do it half-a@$*.
|
Re: Our new 69C10 project
Very cool. The next generation is getting a great intro to the hobby.... lets hope they stick w/it.
|
Re: Our new 69C10 project
Great progress!
What are the specs on the shop? |
Re: Our new 69C10 project
24 x 36, normally my wood shop but the boys have taken it over with the truck, I had to put the 72 in a friends shop, I am out of room and dont know where to put all the old body parts, I guess outside, they are already rusty right.
|
Re: Our new 69C10 project
Nice progress.

Re: Our new 69C10 project
We are having a ball, the boys want to work on it every night, so the bed is going off to the blaster tomorrow and we are waiting for a bunch of parts from LMC this week, half the frame is now cleaned and off comes the cab this week, or al the least the doors and interior. Always fun to meet new friends
