66 C10 Project SWB

Hello, This is my first post but have been reading throughout this board since I purchased the truck in January of this year. Its a bigger project than I wanted but I went with it anyways. Last spring I just finished a 78 CJ7 that was a 5 year rusted out project and I didn't want that this time but here we are anyways. I was looking at a guys 72 that he wanted too much money for and had too much rust, but this was in the background. Its a 66 LWB, factory AC, with the 327, 4 speed on the floor.
(first post of a pics so may or may not work)

The Plan:

SWB conversation
Air ride
5 lug conversation
All power... brakes, steering, windows, locks etc
Power tilt hood...maybe

Normal rust

Rockers, cab corners, floor corners.

This is what I have done so far.
Sand blasted floor, primed, replaced all the rust in on the cab.

I got a little carried away cutting the new patch panel. It ran a little short.

I figured out how to resize.
Mainly everything in black is new metal.

New or new to me stuff I've picked up in the last 6 months

'86 front end suspension. Cleaned, blasted, ground down stamping flaws, paint, new bushings and ball joints.

http://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/...ps062d675c.jpg
'72 12 bolt 5 lug rear axle. Great shape. Cleaned, replaced all seals and outer wheel bearings. Picked up a nice differential cover off of ebay.

Re: 66 C10 Project SWB

My plan from the start was to convert the lwb to a swb, Frame and Bed. I ended up finding a swb bed about 2 hours away. He had quite a few people coming to pick it up so I had to leave on a short notice to beat everyone else there. It was a great find. Mainly rust free, a little damage on the lower corners, wheel tubs have been stretched by 4 inches, and I got him to throw in a decent tail gate. $500, and around here that is a good deal.

Re: 66 C10 Project SWB

The floor in my shop isn't exactly level so I had to use my dad's shop. Its a metal fab shop so he had all the right scrap metal laying around and a 220v welder so it made sense. I did it in his paint room so not to disturb business too much. I leveled out the frame, checked it for square and welded on metal stands.

http://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/...ps6bdaaf79.jpg
http://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/...psb9dd67d9.jpg
Cut out 12 inch in a Z pattern for strength. Welded extra bracing in the inside. I thought the diamond looked better than just a square piece of metal. I think I found that on here somewhere.

Looks good, jump right in should be back on the road in no time. Since you went with the short fleet side, do you still have the chrome trim from the long box?

Re: 66 C10 Project SWB

My plan is to run air ride and set it down pretty low. Not sure how low but I felt that the trailing arm may drag at times. I flipped over the frame and started to shave.
http://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/...pscfcab242.jpg
http://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/...psa174f63c.jpg
Welded in a piece of flat plate.
http://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/...ps7315dd14.jpg
Then cut some holes out for the exhaust.
http://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/...ps3c58db25.jpg
Welded in some 4 inch pipe to regain some strength.
http://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/...ps83251b58.jpg

Well that's about all Ive done so far. I only work on it on the weekends and my wife is incredibly understanding with the time and cash it takes to do a project of this size. I hope everyone enjoys these pictures and keeps following along with my progress. Ill try and update it weekly. Comments and suggestions are always welcomed.

Thanks! I do have some. A lot of it wasn't in good shape and has already hit the trash pile. What parts are you needing?

THANKS!

Shes a keeper. I haven't been married long (Oct of last year) but a few things I have learned already is never say no to anything she wants to buy, help clean the house, and annoy her to the point she tells you to get the hell in the garage. The old timers will probably disagree, Seems to be working so far.

Re: 66 C10 Project SWB

I didn't get a whole lot done this weekend. My grandfather pasted away in March and dad and I worked on cleaning out his shop. Four truck loads of trash and one 1400 pound load of metal to the scrap yard. He kept everything. I did find this cool old toy of his. Not sure what I plan on doing with it other than a bookshelf item. The wheels were robbed a while back to fix another toy.

http://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/...ps0f4457b1.jpg
http://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/...psb05625f1.jpg

Did get my Jeep out and washed up. I mentioned it in my first post that this was my first ground up resto.
http://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/...psbb0018c6.jpg

Anyways back to the truck. I did get some time to start the sandblasting process on the frame. Pretty slow and boring.

Thanks again for everyone viewing.

Welcome to the forum :D

Sorry to hear about your Grandfather :(

You're doing some real nice work on your truck. Judging by the looks of your Jeep, this truck will be equally nice.

Thanks, he will be missed.

Hopefully I can do twice as good on this project as the last and Ill still probably only be half as good as some of you guys. With the Jeep project I realized that you must take your time and don't take short cuts. Seems like everything on the Jeep that I did short cuts on has bit me in the ass. Ive learned to just spend the money in the right places and have the right tools. Still learning a lot tho. Great info on this board.

Got back on the truck this weekend. Cut in the CPP C notches. Sandblasted the back side of the notches to etch the metal, sprayed some primer on it before bolting them on.

http://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/...psb028fd73.jpg

http://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/...ps0c2389a1.jpg

Straightened out the lower radiator support. It was twisted around were someone winched it from there.
Before:
http://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/...psb3c85524.jpg
After: Used a torch to heat up and twist the support back straight. Its not prefect but usable.

Got a lot done this weekend. Finished painting the frame and got it back on jack stands. Started putting on the suspension components that was rebuilt a while back. The disk brake suspension is off of a 87 Chevy truck. 3" drop spindles with slam specializes SS7. I like these because they use an internal bump stop. Air ride is a first for me so its going to be a learn as I go kind of an event.

http://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/...psce6380d6.jpg

Aired out...
Sits pretty low. Not exactly what I was going for but I like it. The bracket kit I got for the front had cups that bolted to the bottom of the bag and sits in the lower control arm spring pocket. They looked too tall at first so i took about two inches out of the 3 inch cup. That may have been a mistake because it looks like the air bag's lower bellow is making contact with the sides of the control arm spring pocket. I'm going to weld back on what I cut off and see where that lands me.

Re: 66 C10 Project SWB

Got my second wind and started putting together the rear suspension. The rear end is out of a 72 Chevy truck with new seals and outer bearings. The rear trailing arms were cleaned up and painted. Installed new poly bushings. Air bags are the same SS7s like the front.

http://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/...psceac6ef6.jpg

http://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/...psceac6ef6.jpg

Used a cup bracket at the top of the air bag to bolt to the frame. I ended up taking it out and seeing what the lower looked like. After the front... I like it lower, it still has a nice rake.

My plan is a new modern 5.3 I would love to go with a 6.0 but don't think my funds would allow it. Keep it fuel injected. I want to run a modern 4L60/80E but I also want to keep the original gauge cluster and the 4Ls never came with a cable driven speedo. They make kits to convert it either way.. cable tail shaft or cable stepper motor box. Both are pricey so Ill probably settle for a 700R4.

Anyone have any better ideas on the transmission?

Re: 66 C10 Project SWB

Been working with the mistress on and off over the last few weeks. Picked up a sway bar at the local pick a part and waiting on the frame brackets to show up. Installed all new steering components and bushings.

Everything is torqued and lock tied with the exception of the control arm bushings. Anyone know how those are suppose to be torqued. They seem like if I tighten then down it'll clamp down on the bushing making them squeak and fail prematurely. Any thoughts?

http://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/...psdeef9003.jpg

http://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/...ps3d572701.jpg

Took it out for some sun.

http://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/...ps8961832f.jpg

http://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/...psc4141bf9.jpg

Ordered a panhard bar from CPP. Its the bent one for over sized differential covers. Not sure if it'll work but it may be a good starting point and then just modify it.

I also welded back on the front bag cups that I cut in half. It raised it pretty good but now I want it lower again. Anyone got any good pics or links of theirs lowered about where mine is? I looked through the bagged pics section but they are all extreme modified frames with laying frames.

Cool truck and Nice progress man! For some reason I couldn't see your earlier pics. Nice how just a bare frame looks cool. I remember sitting there staring at mine on more than one occasion:lol: not sure how low you are trying to go butIf you wanted to go a hair lower you could cut an inch off the front lower cups and add 2 inch lowering blocks in the back. Just a suggestion. Can't wait to see more and welcome to the addiction:metal:

Thanks for your nice comments and sorry to everyone on the pictures. I tried to rearrange my albums in Photobucket and it that was a bad idea. I got most of them fix though and gave up on the rest.
I may go with blocks in the back and just do a lca cup in the front. Seems pretty straight forward. As far as how low...not really looking to tub or raise the bed floor but I'm not against it. I think lowering it any more that what it is now will involve both as well as notching the driver's uca for the steering shaft. Not looking to lay frame but at the height that it is air out is just a little lower than I wanted at ride height. So from what I understand its better to have as more air in the bags rather than just a little. I figured if I can get it to go lower aired out it'll ride better at ride height. I may not do anything right now until I get the body bolted back on. See how it looks.

I could mock it up the body on frame but Sneaky has the engine hoist and is being a lazy ass and not swapping out the engine he was needing it for. J/P I shouldn't complain since Ive been "borrowing" it for the last 10+ years.

Pushed the frame out of the garage and started on the bed. Its in great shape but it does have its problems. No real rust but it does have some panel damage. This is the worse.

Re: 66 C10 Project SWB

Got some replacement panels from Top Banana. I highly recommend them. Prices were super cheap compared to everyone else and the shipping was reasonable. I ordered the rear tail light section and the lower bed panel. Looks like they were drop shipped from Keyparts and they sent both tail light sections and no lower bed panel. One phone call and they had it resolved...quickly. Good people, no complaints from me.

Started cutting away and welded in a new lower bed panel.
http://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/...psf1e24146.jpg

Cut the tail section off and as the story goes....found more rust

http://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/...ps9500111d.jpg

The more I looked at this inner structure the more I just wanted to replace it all. I looked at the original lwb bed and its rear section looked pretty good. It had some rust in the same spots but not near as bad. Mainly the same strip where the tailgate would line up is also rusted. But very repairable.
