No so Low buck 52 / 53 farm truck

I picked him up on one of the rat rod sites...supposed runs...right now I am assessing rear end options as the original one has rear brake drum issues and no one currently sells anything that will fit...

http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...ps7696f42e.jpg

another view as he sits in my dry garage....

http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...psef855f48.jpg

He is a 1 ton from a ranch in New Mexico, I bought it at a decent price, had to have it shipped from Indiana to upstate NY...I am old and smelly and is he...my plans are to update rear axle (1985 K5 Blazer)with better gearing, ditch the old school leaf springs with newer K5 Blazer units...

Also going from 8 lug wheels to 6 bolt...still thinking about how to do that. I am getting a set of 6 lug hubs off of a 1965 Chevy truck for free...hoping to make it work on the front....dual master cylinder upgrade too...

http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...psb30ebec8.jpg

front brake drum came off but not without a fight....let the games begin...

So has anybody gone from 8 lug to 6 lug on one of these 1 ton trucks???

Re: Howard Knapp 1952 / 53 farm truck

I think you need the 1/2 ton axle and remove half of the spring leafs.

Re: Howard Knapp 1952 / 53 farm truck

Yuppers should cutting this stuff out this weekend I hope...

http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...ps24ed2766.jpg

I bet there is 10 leafs in that spring pack...way more than I will ever use...I wanna be able to tow a car trailer with it....so I need springs but nothing like this...also I wanna loose the hydraulic tilting mechanism...put this old truck on diet sorta kinda...

Re: Howard Knapp 1952 / 53 farm truck

I have procured a 1985 Chevy Blazer rear end...took me like 2 hours to get the rear drums off so it would roll...
out to out dimension this rear end is like 64" I think the rear end in the "Howard Knapp" truck is like 62.5"...
http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...psfef0418d.jpg

I also got 2 quotes for new leaf springs with hangers and all the misc hardware too...one guy was at $730.00 and the other was like $715.00...I was really scratching my head and thinking about this kind of money for 1985 Blazer parts...so I did the next best thing and I called up the local junk yard and they are pulling a a pair of rear springs with hangers for $200.00 off of a late 1990's Chevy truck. I am hoping to get everything except I will be having to purchase 4 u-bolts from the local NAPA store...Speedway sells a generic shock mount I can weld onto the rear housing for under $20.00.

Sounds like a good plan. Mine is a 3800 too, but its on a Dakota chassis and now looks like a 3100.

Re: Low buck 52 / 53 farm truck

Old clunky rear end assembly is out...trying to figure out how to mount the late 1990's 1/2 ton rear springs that I got from a local junk yard for $200.00.

http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...ps8fd8b322.jpg

new rear springs sorta kinda "mocked" up in place...

http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...ps9a850182.jpg

Lots of measuring left to do...cant wait to get it rolling on some 6 lug steel wheels...

Anybody out there have any 6 Chevy steel wheels that they wanna sell me???

Re: Low buck 52 / 53 farm truck

New (1985 Chevy K5 Blazer) rear end is in place...

http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...ps5375bf4c.jpg

New hardware from Speedway Motors...about $100.00 for the upper saddles, perches and ubolts too...

http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...ps90551562.jpg

My goal is a driver...an old truck that I can actually go out and drive and not get run over by other traffic....

Re: Low buck 52 / 53 farm truck

I was on facebook asking about a 1/2 ton front spindles...and dont you know...I get front spindles and I am now I am waiting for the front axle next...all 1/2 ton too...
http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...ps02b2cac5.jpg

Next it the front springs and hanger swap...the 1 ton front springs are 2" wide and the 1/2 ton is 1.75" wide...so I found online a fellow parting out a 1951 1/2 ton frame...he is sending me hangers and springs and all the misc hardware too...

cant wait to get it home and get fiddling with it...

I found out Ecklers Chevy truck parts has a complete 6 lug disc brake kit for less than $700.00...includes brackets and mastercylinder and proportioning valve too..

Any body used this set up before?

Just a little update....we are pluggin along...

http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...psee152e9a.jpg

Rock Auto shocks....I think they were less than $30.00 for the pair...made in the USA too!!! Oh yeah the rear is a 1985 K5 Chevy Blazer so I figured I would mount 1985 K5 Blazer shocks too...Rock Auto also supplied new drums and all the fixens that go inside....less than $250.00 for everything...

http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...ps38ee4975.jpg

New Copper 215/75/15 tires on used 1966 Chevy wheels...the wheels were $100.00 for the set and the tires were $100.00 each off of EBAY...

http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...psc0e0842c.jpg

another view...

http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...ps779a88b9.jpg

I think I wanna round off the tops of the shock mounts....not sure how tall the stock bed rails are going to be....anybody know how tall they are???

One new cab corner installed...:)

Passenger side cab corner is installed...so happy...it actually doesn't look all that bad...

I really love the South Western vintage sheet metal...it does have tin worms but nothing like the Northeast New Yrok stuff I have seen so much of in the past couple of projects...almost cherry like...

Took the 1 ton stuff out...put all 1/2 ton stuff in...axle is from kentucky....front springs are from Conn...the truck is originally from New Mexico...currently sitting in my garage in upstate NY...

Howard Knapp is gonna be a truck salad for sure...cant wait to get it rolling again..

Hey 53 292

I went online and found Rock Auto and they were able to supply everything brandy new and at about 1/2 the cost of my local NAPA store. I even got new rear brake drums too....I think I have less than $250.00 for all the brake parts...

Thanks for asking.

I ordered some stuff to help this thing stop...

http://www.classicperform.com/Store/...954CBK-6HK.htm

they told me it would 5-7 days before it shipped from the left coast....I am on the east coast....so I am thinking another 7 days before it gets to me...so I have 2 weeks to get the old master cylinder out and all the other misc stuff that goes along with it...

Oh yeah....I have a bunch of bullet holes I can fill in while I wait...

Can't wait to get this thing rolling again...

Re: Low buck 52 / 53 farm truck

I finally got the parking brake/ emergency brake cables figured out...I am running a 1985 Chevy K5 Blazer rear end in this truck. I am also trying to keep the truck as close to stock as I can with the exception of all the junk under the frame rails...so modern rear end and new disc brakes on the front...So I cobble up this bracket to join the old to the new....I used the 1952/53 brackets and what was left of the fine threaded rod from that era...

http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...ps2eb5tc9r.jpg

I had to buy 2 short e-brake cables from Rock Auto that fit I believe the right side of the Blazer rear...a Sunday after noon spent cuttin/welding and grinding we have this...hope it works out...

Cant wait to get this thing rolling again...

Kinda thinking about selling it when I get it running again...sorta bored with it right now...

Any takers?

Hi Everyone
Been a long couple of weeks....still cuttin and grinding on Howaord Knapp....http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...psetd5fvo3.jpg

http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...psjddt9dd0.jpg

Still no disc brake kit...CPP told me March 18, 2015 to maybe ship the parts out...

Never been a fan of jack stand trucks...this one is taking way too long to get back moving...

ADHD is kicking on me bad...

sorta gettting bored with it right now...nothing else to cut and grind on so we will keep doing what we have been doing...

My step son who suffers from ADHD also..... I was sharing with him the boredom that I am getting from this project....and he says with a total straight face...."There is no checkered flag.....".....all so true for sure...thinking about running oval track again...at least there is a checkered flag at the end of each night....these things never end do they???

Re: Low buck 52 / 53 farm truck

Hi Mike, welding and grinding, welding and grinding, I know how you feel.

No, there is no checkered flag, for me there is the late night walk out to the shop or in the morning before work just to get the satisfying feeling of accomplishment.

You are in the never ending stage where the victories are few and far between. This is the stage where I do what I call "zombie through". I put myself physically in at the project and physically do the work but I try to remove myself mentally from the project. Yes, enough to pay attention, but not emotionally involved in the moment.

Sooner or later you walk out to the shop and realize your ready for the next step, that's a happy moment, savor it, it doesn't always last long til the next step is finished.

Since you doing it for yourself I also try to stay away from a deadline. With no deadline you can focus on your accomplishments, and feel satisfaction.

With a deadline you will be focused on all that you still have to finish, this can be very draining.

You've made great progress with the sheet metal work so far, it's just one night at a time, keep up the good work.

Not a bad weekend...not nearly enough time with working 2 jobs and all...but I am going to be forever in debt to My Jim Carter trucks...

Took the top two off and put the one on the bottom in its place...I like the shiny new one better...

http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...psmhhutect.jpg

even got the one under the hood from the started motor to the frame rail swapped out too....

http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...pse7ewslcc.jpg

more time under the dash board too...cuttin and grindin again...

http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...ps5tzpygsq.jpg

I also got the heater pulled out (and vacuumed too) and I blew the dirt and stuff out of it...swapped out the 6 volt motor for a brandy new 12 volt one (thanks you Jim Carter again)...new heater hoses as well...

MikeC

P.S. I hope you guys dont mind but this is gonna stay a smelly old farm truck...low buck...down and dirty...and no shine at all.....

http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...psi92lk7qv.jpg
this is the best shot of the goods from CPP...I am not too keen on it but as long as it doesn't fail on me....that is all I care about...
the stock 1962/64 15" Chevy truck wheels keep hitting on the caliper shown here...
http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...psqyveu7ql.jpg

So what are you guys running for stockish steel wheels 15 wheels with disc brakes???

I have an email into vintiques wheels in hopes they can help me out...I wrote to summit and they told me to write directly to the wheel manufacturer...which is vintiques...

Should I grind this caliper to clear the stockish steel wheel???

As always...cant wait to get it rolling again...this thing is taking way too long to get out of the garage...

Re: Low buck 52 / 53 farm truck

I wanted to run 6" steel wheel smoothies on my lowered 96' chevy I had before. I had to grind the caliper maybe a 1/16 to 1/8 to clear the wheels. I never had any issues. I think as long as it's just a little grinding you'll still be safe. IMO.

I got my bubba going on this post...

http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...psqemwbwcd.jpg

here is the hole I had to cut to access all the new CPP brake parts....

http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...psicttrud5.jpg

here is the access door I cobbed up on it...still not sure if I wanna hinge it or screw it down tight to the floor board...

http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...ps71apfhh9.jpg

finally got a pair of vintiques 15" steel wheels...had the new old rubber swapped out to these wheels...

I even left the bullet holes sorta still there....I filled them with my trusty MIG welder...if you folks cant tell yet....I want this thing to stay looking like a smelly old farm truck...no shine on this truck...

Hi Everyone

Been toiling away almost every night...

http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...psmmadddiz.jpg

Jim Carter parts provided this 12 volt alternator with a bracket too...

http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...psx7mhoxso.jpg

Got my bubba skills out again....some one before me cut almost 12" off the original frame rails....I had already taken the tilt bed off last fall...I am rebuilding this truck into a 9' long step side bed as it would have come from the factory if someone had ordered it that way....

Still ordering parts...last night the big brown truck dropped off an EZ wiring harness...I didnt open the box yet but I thinking tonight after work I will start to lay thing out...

Oh yeah...took the stock carb off for a snail mail ride to Florida to get rebuilt...ordered more stuff from Jim Cater trucks too...oil lines and a carb spacer...

Cant wait to get this thing running and outside again...

Been busy busy busy on yea ole farm truck...I don't do carburetors but I found a fellow in Florida so we shipped this original one down to him...this is the before shot..

http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...psllcexxtd.jpg

this is the after shot here...

http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...pst34z6qh7.jpg

then I bought and EZ wire 12 circuit harness....gosh I dont enjoy electrical at at all...wish my dad or my son were around still they both loved all that "ohms law" stuff...me it makes me cringe trying to figure it all out...I was on the phone at least once a week while I stumbled my way thru it...ended up with 5 left over circuits...so I saved them like this...

http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...pslxcmu6md.jpg

then we went to the tail end of this truck...I found the original tail light brackets that came with it....

http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...psmnuzczgj.jpg

I had a pair of CJ7 tail light from my last Jeep project...this is them getting ready to mount them here...

http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...psvwdn7j6v.jpg

Now I am waiting for fuel lines from Jim Carter truck parts as we speak...oh yeah...I bought a new fuel pump and installed that too..

hoping and praying to have this thing at least yard driving sometime this summer...

As always...cant wait to get this thing done...

Hi Sim6

Kinda funny you would ask that...I keep thinking we are getting closer and then I find more junk I gotta buy for it..right now waiting on gas lines from Jim Carter truck parts...

then I am thinking I gotta get the old gas tank boiled out...I dont even know if it runs or not...the fellow I bought it from told me it was a yard driving truck...So I am hoping it should run with all new wiring and good brakes on it too...

Oh shoot...still have the drivers side floor and inner cowl panel to weld in...box is still waiting for someone with a brake big enough to bed up the sides with..

Thanks for asking

MikeC

P.S. might be selling it once I get it done...still thinking do I really want this truck or not...it is way bigger than I thought it was gonna be...seems really antiquated too as I work away on it....

Good progress Mike. Seems there is always something more to do. Hopefully you will be driving it soon!

mikec4193 06-11-2015 08:01 PM

bubba would be proud of my today

So I bought this truck because it was cheap and from the South West...the bad is it a a dreaded 1 ton truck...I have learned that the rear frame on this truck is 36" wide and the normal 1/2 ton is 46" wide...so I have been buying bed parts for this truck and guess what...nothing fits....so I thought and thought about this....much chin scratching...

http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...pscdu1bfmr.jpg

1 ton frame width

http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...psou16oxt5.jpg

1/2 ton rear panel width....

http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...psrwh0ykej.jpg

So off to the steel pile and I find some 3x3 steel tube I cut in half for a willys project I sold...

http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...ps7ib3m4qw.jpg

So some cuttin and fittin and now the 1 ton frame rails will fit a 1/2 box parts...

http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...ps6aczpeze.jpg

This weekend I am getting the new 9' bed sides bent to fit the 6 new stake pockets I have gotten from Jim Carter truck parts....

After that I gotta order all the misc bed brackets...blocks...rubber pieces....cross sills...angle brackets too....tons of misc hardware also.....

then comes the $300.00 for the 9' long yellow pine boards to finsih everything up on the back end...

As always...cant wait to get it done...
