New project! The "Red Herring"
Just dragged this one home today:
http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...ps7bcfe7dc.jpg 1950 GMC 100. I'm branching out from the 67-72 world a bit  Anyways, it's an original shortbed, 4 speed, the motor was rebuilt in '97 or so and actually runs pretty darn good. The brakes were gone over, but the fuel tank and lines are shot and there's no bed anymore. Also was "converted" to 12v at some point - the ignition won't shut the motor off, add on blinkers don't work, and the heater and wipers appear to be unhooked. The body is in pretty good shape, aside from a few dents and a LOT of paint on it, so far it looks like I just need to do cab corners, the front lower pillar at the inner fender on the driver's side, and floor pan patches. I'm calling it "Red Herring" because it's a secret build my Dad and I are doing for my Mom, which will be a surprise (hopefully) in the spring. Most likely, plan is to do an S10 chassis swap with an LC9 5.3 / 4L60E combo, more modern leather seat, and otherwise leave it just the way it was. Mom loves the vintage look, just not turning wrenches on them. Though I admit, I'm thinking about putting a bed on it and tooling around with it just the way it is for a bit! Right now, it's tucked back in the corner of my garage, waiting for some space when I get my '63 Buick project in gear. Stay tuned! :gmc2: http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...ps0f15c4fc.jpg |
Re: New project! The "Red Herring"
Im in ,looks like a solid start .

Re: New project! The "Red Herring"
Excited to get started, thanks guys!

So I was going over all the paperwork getting ready to get a new title for the truck last night, and ran into a problem. The current title I have is assigned using the engine serial number instead of the cab serial??? No idea why they did that. The story I got was that this truck got put up in a barn somewhere many many years ago, and the owner previous to the one I bought it from pulled it out of that barn and rebuilt the engine and drove it around (I have receipts for the motor in 1997) - it appears it didn't have a title at that point, and that it was issued to the engine serial. That gentleman passed away in 2011, and the previous owner to me bought the truck from his estate - then never did anything with it, including getting a title. So I just bought it from them, with a signed title from the estate sale now filled out to me. I'm now jumping through hoops with the DMV to try and get the title re-issued with the cab serial on it, since I want to change the engine  |
Re: New project! The "Red Herring"
Unless you already have a donor truck, why not just add a MII front? Your frame looks like it would be OK.

That said, for the intended purpose for this truck, I'd rather use a factory engineered frame, suspension and brake set-up and be less concerned about non-mechanically inclined drivers. Also, ease of service is a factor, and cheapness of good clean frame donors around here. |
Re: New project! The "Red Herring"
I retract my previous question...
If you haven't found it yet, Skymangs has an excellent write-up of the S-10 swap. here's the link... http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=632686 |
Re: New project! The "Red Herring"
Haven't done much to this truck other than some research, but did grab some 1st gen S10 seats at the boneyard today:
http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...psd0aa09cd.jpg http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...ps5755dfbe.jpg These are some of my favorite GM bucket seats from over the years. I think I can leave the original seat riser in place, and build a support for these seats inside of it. I also picked up the keyless entry setup from the same S10 :uhmk: ... tinkering and brainstorming! |

Getting into some tear down for the cab finding what needs replacement, where I'm at right now: Outer cowl panels on both sides Inner-outer cowl joiner panel both sides Kick panels, both sides Front cab supports, both sides Front floor pans, both sides Lower firewall/toeboard, passenger's side Cab corner, passenger's side Windshield channel at the lower outer corner, both sides. The glass I pulled last night was the original stuff in the original gaskets! There are 6 layers of paint on top of the original stuff, which is actually in surprisingly good shape under the hood (I found soap pencil marks on the firewall!) I've also found several places where dents were filled with lead. How in the heck do I get this stuff off?? |
Re: New project! The "Red Herring"
Making some progress:
http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...ps56dbdaa1.jpg http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...ps9e2fda1c.jpg I'm mechanically scraping the paint off using a gasket scraper, it seems to go more easily, doesn't cut into the metal, and added bonus doesn't release any toxic dust. There are 6 different coats of paint on this truck. As is to be expected, it lived a truck life and so is full of dents. Not much rust, thankfully, but dents. The PO liked to fill them with bondo. LOTS of bondo. This gem here was filled completely: http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...psce1c46f1.jpg But I am excited to have found factory markings on the firewall http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...ps758228aa.jpg and original paint intact on the front portion of the firewall and inside the cowl vent. http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...ps6f168ddb.jpg http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...ps3c4cacd5.jpg I liked the red that was on it, but I'm in love with this slightly darker shade! Not having a whole lot of luck locating a paint name or code - I've seen one reference to a "Permanent Red" ... I presume the names are not the same as Chevrolet, as they weren't in later years. |
Re: New project! The "Red Herring"
Cool project!
|
Re: New project! The "Red Herring"
The truck is getting lighter!
 Seriously I've removed about 10 pounds of paint and bondo so far. Mostly just filled in dents. I'm going to learn a LOT about hammer and dolly work, I'd say. http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...ps6e1bc0e1.jpg Also found typical rot in the cab corners. http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...ps8a5bfbe7.jpg http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...pscb881bf4.jpg |

Making additions, finally!
2011 4.8L LR4, scored it for $700 with 63K http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...ps6134e10b.jpg 1965 Pontiac full-size tilt column, just doing a test fit, going to center between the gauges. http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...psdc61a121.jpg http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...ps21a4ef9b.jpg I'm going to be running the 2011 4L60E through the column shift. I have all the patch panels for the cab here now (Merry Christmas to me!) and I'm going to get right into metal repairs here in the next few weeks. |
Re: New project! The "Red Herring"
Nice scores...love the LS and look forward to updates. Column looks to be the perfect length too.

Is this common? http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...pseed40a92.jpg |
Re: New project! The "Red Herring"
I wouldn't say in was commom, but it depends on the area your in, and how bad they rust. Mine was solid in that area, but forward it was bad...Jim

Re: New project! The "Red Herring"
More progress today.
http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...psb36fb387.jpg http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...ps4f9cdc17.jpg The inside of the driver's roof pillar had been previously cut for reasons that are inexplicable to me - they didn't fix the dent on the other side? I'm nearly there http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...ps69843bbd.jpg Melted out all the body lead in preparation for repairing the cowl - I was going to leave the pillar-roof seams, but it was cracked on both sides. http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...psffdb63f4.jpg http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...ps01161bc8.jpg http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...ps755ab086.jpg Pleased to find no rust under the lead. |
Re: New project! The "Red Herring"
Making some real ... progress??
Door braces installed: http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...psb2984c66.jpg http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...ps85d0130d.jpg http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...psa2d1744d.jpg My doors fit nicely (other than needing the strikers replaced) at this point so I didn't want to mess with any of the alignment No turning back now http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...psc014fc87.jpg Passenger's side, getting ready to replace the rocker panel and support http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...psde183b41.jpg http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...psfc72d3b6.jpg Hopefully will get a few hours during the week to keep plugging away |
Re: New project! The "Red Herring"
Scored a 30k mile wrecking yard trans from a 2010 truck:
http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...psc553a868.jpg More progress on patching up the passenger's side. Rocker and floor test fit: http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...ps8faa2857.jpg Sectioning out the rot in hinge pillar: http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...ps0c85caf2.jpg http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...ps3a49d0dd.jpg New pieces made http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...ps8654cd78.jpg Welded in http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...psd52213be.jpg And all blended http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...ps80a3d521.jpg http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...ps3879dd85.jpg Last thing I did tonight was start fitting my replacement kick panel. These repo ones are thicker than the originals, and I am happy for that. The curve at the bottom of the pillar leaves something to be desired, but there is enough metal to bend it into a better fit so I am reasonably satisfied http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...psfb8df911.jpg |
Re: New project! The "Red Herring"
Nice work! Cab will be looking new soon. Nice score on the low mile transmission.

Making more progress tonight. Welded in a patch on the heater vent opening and rebuilt the lip http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...ps8bcf7586.jpg http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...ps18495186.jpg Then, I fit the passenger's floor patch http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...ps7e2eac69.jpg http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...ps271e6fbc.jpg As you can see, there wasn't much left of the floor at all near the kick panel, so I need to fab up a patch for the upper 6" or so. I'm not terribly happy with the way the floor fits right now - it wants to sit about 3/4" inboard of and about 5/8" lower than the edge of the hinge pillar it should mate to. I know I need to tweak the angle at the toeboard a bit, but I'm also suspicious that my cab is twisted a bit. Likewise, after doing some poking around the rear cab mounts, I decided I would be well served to replace them and the rear floor as well. It's rusted and bent in multiple places. |
Re: New project! The "Red Herring"
Good fitting on the patches. Great looking Wildcat you have there too. Did you get it painted yet?

Re: New project! The "Red Herring"
Page two - this means I've made it as a project, right??
I had the day off work - spent most of the morning cutting out the floor pan I tacked in last night, making some fit adjustments, and resetting it. I just couldn't get things to line up to my satisfaction. Glad I caught it now! Once that was set, I made a patch for the upper floor and firewall at the kick panel: http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...ps0c8d5c19.jpg Planning to use a Vintage Air unit so I don't need the outer heater hole. All tacked in: http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...psf452a829.jpg Fully welded the upper portion and ground mostly flush (going to be behind the firewall insulator and I didn't think I'd be able to do it with the kick panel in - in fact I could hardly do it with the kick panel out!) http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...psf2efcc55.jpg Kick panel tacked in: http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...ps5bc5a114.jpg Overall shot, with the rocker and cab mount set in place for positioning and line-up: http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...ps5d01c6f3.jpg Final parting shot: http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...psab57e5c7.jpg Just two pieces left to make for this side! |
Re: New project! The "Red Herring"
A little more progress tonight.
Drilled for spot welds on the kick panel http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...psae813dde.jpg Spot welds done http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...ps9fde41de.jpg Fitted and tacked in the bottom of the kick panel. Other than finishing up the seams, not much left to do here. http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...psd80d8118.jpg |
Re: New project! The "Red Herring"
Nice, that is looking like a solid truck floor now!
|
Re: New project! The "Red Herring"
Thanks AD!
I spent a bunch of time today fighting with the inner cowl filler panel. If I'd just come on here and searched, I'd have found out that I need to cut it apart to make it fit ... Ah well, live and learn . Got the front cab mount spot welded in, seam welded the bottom of the kick panel to the floorpan, and welded in the front of the rocker panel. Fitment is good, very happy. http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...pszzahndjs.jpg http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...pspjjb05tm.jpg Tomorrow I'm going to start de-constructing the driver's side. I'm hoping to get both parts of the front floor patched up, then I will switch gears and install the rear floor pan kit I got from Absolute Sheetmetal. |
Re: New project! The "Red Herring"
Also apparently I haven't mentioned I've had a change of direction as far as the chassis for the truck goes:
http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...pseikiawoo.jpg I picked that up yesterday for a song. The more I looked at the S10 swap setup the less happy I was with it. I'm now going to be doing a frame swap for a hybrid - 67-72 2WD short rear frame with coils with the G-body front clip. The G-body uses the same control arms, spindles, and springs as the 2WD S10, but the track width and engine cradle are 4" wider which makes for no front wheel spacers and an easier install for the LS engine. Plus it should get the steering box (which is a quick ratio like the ZQ8) out of the way of my radiator :metal: |
Re: New project! The "Red Herring"
Nice work on the right side of the cab! G body front clip swap with the 72 rear frame section will be interesting. The steering box won't get into the inner fender?
|
Re: New project! The "Red Herring"
J52, I've heard guy use the G body front end with good results. The rear of the 67-72 frame is different. Why couldn't you use the components of this system and just mount to the existing rear section of frame?...Jim
|
Re: New project! The "Red Herring"
Quote:
That said, I saw a thread on here (which I can't find at the moment of course ) where they installed a 67-72 rear trailing arm setup into an AD frame and it worked out pretty well - my reasoning was, since I'm already going to have to reposition the cab with the front clip anyway, and since all the stepside beds are close in design, it should not be terribly difficult. I also have access to a 67-72 frame with bent frame horns up front, so that helped make the decision. I've taken a whole slew of measurements off my trucks and a few others I've looked at, and it seems like everything should line up nicely. How far I get, we shall see... |
Re: New project! The "Red Herring"
Seems you've done your homework on the fit, I'm along for the build, so I'll keep watching, best of luck...Jim

Re: New project! The "Red Herring"
That Cutlass nose if in good shape should bring in some extra cash ,kind of hard to find them.

I have a 83 cutlass wagon and some quick measurements seem to be the same wheelbase. if my frame was sketchy I was going to use it. Will be interested to watch how you do. |

Today I had a day of unexpected warm, sunny weather. Which meant I did an outdoor project I've been holding off on - I made the fence between my house and my garage "swing away" so I could get the part storage trailer and my parts car into the back yard (and actually park my daily in the driveway ) http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...psgsumzcjh.jpg http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...psknjmgwen.jpg But I did start tearing down the driver's side http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...pscgn2kucw.jpg http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...psantnuw54.jpg This side will need more repairs in the pillars. I have a patch for the rear pillar and I'm going to fab up the lower section below the hinge pocket (which is in fine shape) Other news, there was a baseball sized dent in this pillar, which I'm working on massaging out. I've never done hammer and dolly work before, so slow going here and being careful. A tap here, a tap there! http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...pssqgurwnu.jpg I should have a pretty easy week at work this week so stay tuned for updates! |
Re: New project! The "Red Herring"
I've been distracted doing research these past few days - got the wiring harness off the 4.8L and am sending it out tomorrow or Thursday for standalone conversion and reflash. Keeping the VVT features, EVAP purge function, but deleting the rest of the emissions stuff.
I also got on the horn with MAR-K and ordered a bed. A pleasure to deal with those folks! First off, rust repair. Apparently the PO thought bondo was a substitute for structural steel? http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...psnhiqqrei.jpg So out with the bad bit http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...psw7qf79ga.jpg Clamp up the patch panel http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...psko3unbmo.jpg and wala! http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...psnfsddbr8.jpg That's the second round of tacks. Still have a little more to do. I wanted to get this repair done before I cut the rockers free, so I had a good solid reference to get the height and angle correct. Second: Who can guess A. What this is / where it's from and B. What I'm going to be doing with it? http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...pskz5kgcq1.jpg |
Re: New project! The "Red Herring"
Nice patching! Hate to say it, I am striking out on the part....should know what it is.
