Crash's 69 K10
Hello, thought I would introduce my project. I am starting on a ground up restore of my 1972 K10. I purchased the K10 Thursday night and have driven it about 250 miles. I feel comfortable with the mechanical side of the restore (although I am not sure which direction I will be taking). The truck runs and drives good for a 40 year truck, but the body is rough with some bad rust in places. I am a newbie when it comes to bodywork and paint. I am hoping some of you will be able to lead me down the right path when it comes to those areas.

Re: Crash's 72 K10
Thats a pretty good start for 3 days. I suppose the tare down goes pretty quick, it's the reassembly that takes longer. Good luck on the project.

Re: Crash's 72 K10
Thanks Jayman.. That was all done today... I am very sore.. :-) And yes you are right it will take much longer to put it back together..

Re: Crash's 72 K10
Looks great. I posted a message concerning how the rear bumper attaches to the frame on a leaf spring suspension and I see you have one. Do you have picture of how the rear bumper bracket attaches to the frame?

Sunday I finished the tear down and started the clean up process.

Any ideas in this area? My thoughts are to clean the frame (by hand or have it sand basted), then coat it with POR-15 and then paint. However, I am looking for advice… Also, I need to post the wheels and tires for sale along with the engine, transmisson, and transfercase. |

Re: Crash's 72 K10
You have a sick truck, LB or not, it's a SB now and that's all that matters. Although LB K10's look sweet when they're lifted. Congrats on the frame off, I'm sure it will look sick when you're done with her. You asked for feedback in regards to the diff's. What are your plans with her? Any off-roading? Or will she be a sick K10? This will determine what the diff's call for. I use to rock craw and wheel the heck out of my K10, so she had a built D44 with an ARB chromoly axles, cross over and high steer with PSC hydraulic assist and 4.10's up front, (Brand new D60 in the garage waiting to be dropped in) 14BFF with detroit locker out back. Did awesome off-road, wouldn't need any or all of this if she won't be heavily wheeled.

Thanks, I hope it all turns out well. Wow, sounds like you have quite a setup. Good look with the axle swap. I was really looking for some advice on prepping the frame, but since you asked about the diffs, my plans are to leave them stock. I will be using the truck to pull the boat in and out of the water, and maybe some light off-roading. I had hoped to only replace the seals but both diff's have some slack in the pinion area, so I will have to fix that. I am not sure what they will need, (bearings??) bit I hope to tear them down this weekend. |
Re: Crash's 72 K10
Time for an update, yesterday I spent the day building a work table to work off of. I had something similar over 20 years ago when I was a mechanic at the local NAPA. It was great for rebuilding transmission and Transfer Cases.
http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PB240256.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PB240255.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PB240254.jpg Today I finished up the work table and started on the rear axle. http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PB240257.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PB240260.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PB240262.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PB240266.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PB240279.jpg Not sure what this was. There was one on each side of the axle. I guess I will cut them off and clean up the axle. http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PB240282.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PB240283.jpg This does not look good. http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PB240288.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PB240290.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PB240293.jpg Something hit here at one time. http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PB240295.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PB240296.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PB240299.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PB240301.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PB240303.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PB240305.jpg I could not found where the loose metal came from. I can only assume something happened to the differential at an earlier time and it was not cleaned up well. It looks like I will need to replace the ring, pinion, and bearings. |
Re: Crash's 72 K10
Sweet table, I've had the same issue before, where you find shrapnel and can't pin point where it's from. Look at it this way, once you finish the diff's, you'll be confident that they will hold up to what you throw at them.

I've always ran Yukon gears from Randy's Ring & Pinion, they ship quick and cheap. Prices have always been reasonable and they're made in the US.

Re: Crash's 72 K10
Today, I started very early (5:00am), in order to watch some college football. Today’s goal was to remove and tear down the DANA 44 front axle. I finished up around 11:00 (had to make a trip to town for a few tools).
http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PB260308.jpg Still very dark outside… http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PB260310.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PB260315.jpg On the table… http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PB260316.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PB260317.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PB260318.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PB260320.jpg This is reusable I believe. http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PB260321.jpg This too… http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PB260322.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PB260323.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PB260326.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PB260327.jpg Looks like I have ran out of things to remove from the frame. This week I will start ordering parts.. Ring and Pinion, seals, bearings, etc. Also, new bushings for the springs. I guess I will order some POR15 to protect everything with. |
Re: Crash's 72 K10
When you order the gears, just order a master install kit for each axle. The kit will have everything needed for install. X2 on randy's.
On the frame, you can wire wheel it if you have the time. POR = paint over rust. Good start on the truck! |
Re: Crash's 72 K10

Just to make sure I am clear, you would wire wheel and then paint with POR? Would you also you POR on the axles and springs? |

I bought a used Texas Blaster Yesterday. https://www.texasblaster.com/pics/22-m.jpg I have never used one before, so I am open to any ideas on how use it. |

This weekend I hope to get the Dana 44 rebuilt and ready to remount to the frame. |
Re: Crash's 72 K10
Installed all new bearings and setup the differential on the DANA 44 today. I created setup bearings for the carrier bearings and a setup race for the inner pinion race. This made the process much easier. Unlike the 12 bolt that I setup last week, the DANA took multiple iterations to get the pinion depth and backlash correct. Unfortunately I did not take time to get pictures of the setup.
http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PC100396.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PC100397.jpg After I buttoned the differential up, I started on the ball joints. http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PC100399.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PC100402.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PC100403.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PC100405.jpg Knuckles installed http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PC100408.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PC100410.jpg Left Hub and rotor installed. http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PC100412.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PC100413.jpg I couldn’t do the right hub, there was some damage from some event in the past. http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PC100414.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PC100415.jpg I am considering going with a disc brake setup in the rear. Not sure yet, but will research it some tonight. Tomorrow, if it warms up enough I will do some painting on the axles, if not I will get rigged up for sand blasting. |
Re: Crash's 72 K10
Setup the sandblaster today, and started on some of the smaller stuff. Nasty job, wish I had someplace close to take everything and have it done. Overall I had good results, but very messy, and expensive (Media).
http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PC110419.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PC110421.jpg Had blasting media everywhere, glad I decided to do it outside. http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PC110426.jpg I also pressed the bushings out of all four springs. http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PC110422.jpg After that I started on the spring bushing in frame.. It took some time. http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PC110423.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PC110425.jpg But I got them out.. http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PC110428.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PC110429.jpg I also removed the engine and transmission crossmembers.. http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PC110431.jpg First thing in the morning, I will go to the tractor supply to pick up some more blasting media, and start blasting the frame. |
Re: Crash's 72 K10

Re: Crash's 72 K10
It was too humid to paint with the POR15 today, so I decided to clean the frame up even more. First I removed some old brackets. Then I decided I would box the area where the LB to SB conversion was done. First step was to create some templates out of cardboard.
http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PC130460.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PC130461.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PC130462.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PC130463.jpg Then I transferred the temple shape to some 3/16” plate and cut them pieces out using my hand grinder and some cutoff wheels. It took about 25 minutes to cut pieces out and trim them to size. After that I welded them into place. http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PC130467.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PC130468.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PC130469.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PC130470.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PC130471.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PC130472.jpg After that I figured I should degrease the frame, I had handled it with grease gloves during the cleanup and boxing. http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PC130473.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PC130474.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PC130475.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PC130476.jpg I also degreased and prepped the axles for paint. http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PC130464.jpg Back to work tomorrow, but I hope to be back to the shop Thursday to finally start the paint on the frame. |
Re: Crash's 72 K10

Started off the day with finishing up the DANA 44; mounted the calipers, and then installed the manual hub locks.
http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PC160497.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PC160502.jpg Then I installed the 12 bolt brakes and hubs. http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PC160498.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PC160499.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PC160500.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PC160503.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PC160504.jpg When I tore down the transfer case it was full of ATF, so I pulled the bearing out of the transmission to transfer case and checked the seals. Re: Crash's 72 K10
Today I final got the axle and springs mounted to the frame. The truck had lift blocks on the rear axle. I believe they were home built out of 2” sq. tubing. They were rusting from the inside out, so I decided to install real lift bolts in their place.

I guess I should look around a little more… |
Re: Crash's 72 K10
Love this build... really like the work table you built. Give us a dimensions and materials
list if you have any free time. Keep up the good work, sounds like a good price for a 5.3/4l60 combo w/acc, radiator, and computer. |

Re: Crash's 72 K10
Great job. I'm currently building a 72 K10 as well. Going to be a daily driver. Haven't got into quite the depth as you, yours looks great!! Maybe we can compare notes as we have the same truck and are about at the same stage of the build.

Re: Crash's 72 K10
Yesterday I sand blasted the engine cross member, transmission cross member, transfer case brackets, drive shafts, and the radiator support.

Mine were routed outside of the frame; however, I believe it should be routed inside. http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PC210537.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PC210538.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PC210539.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PC210540.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...t/PC210541.jpg After sandblasting the radiator support I found a few cracked places. Today I will weld those up and start painting with the POR15. Waiting on some pictures of the 5.3L that I am thinking of using. |
