71 Chevelle pics WIW????

It is a 350 w/ 270hp, automatic, buckets, console shift. I could not get hood open or get under car but it is an automatic. Do not know about ps,pb etc. The VIN is 136371R180522 any info would be appreciated. I did find the protectoplate in the golve box with owners manual. It should be matching numbers car as well. It has rust in typical areas as well as surface rust. The interior is molded and most of it is shot but the console shifter looks to be in ok shape and buckets could be rebuilt. Car was running when parked. Take a look and let me know if I should pic it up the price is $700. It also looks to be all original.

Just for the fact that you rarely see old cars sitting makes me think you could double your money. You wont get rich, but Im guessing theres some money to make there. A bath, a little cleaning & air in tires goes a long ways...

Re: 71 Chevelle pics WIW????

I'd give 500 for it, the malibu cars aren't worth as much as chevelles, and that ones pretty rough. Did you check the floors? Sitting right on the ground like that can ruin floors and in severe cases, frames, and it looks like its been there for a while.

Re: 71 Chevelle pics WIW????

I say go for it. If you look in the DFW classic car trader, stripped down shells of that bodystyle are going for over $2k. As long as the frame and floor are fairly solid it's worth it.

I have owned two other cars a 69 and 70 and still do not know the difference between a Malibu and Chevelle I thought it was a Malibu/Chevelle? What is the difference?

Re: 71 Chevelle pics WIW????

I had 2 malibu chevelles. My first was a 72 and the second was a 71. I HATE the fact that I sold my 71. It was pretty clean. I also had a 69 SS. IIRC the malibu was still a chevelle just a different option package. Didn't come with cowl induction hood (some came with just a cowl hood, no induction), had different gauges than the Super Sport models. They also had a "Heavy Chevy" package. That was a malibu with a non functional cowl hood bench seat and auto on the column. I think I'm pretty much right on this, but correct me if I'm wrong............................Bamm!

Even if it turns out to be too much pig to put back in the poke that is probably at least $1k of parts sitting there.

I'ld try to offer closer to $500 though since even an optomistic guess at a restore cost is going to involve more than a can of rubbing compound and a bottle of clorox.

hey man, i'd just go for it and see how it turned out. if all else fails, you could get some of your money back if you sold it to 1970bowtie

Thanks for the info. D & G in Tyler has some 67-72 stuff but the lack of English there pisses me off.

i miss my 71 chevelle malibu...more than i miss my ex wife...i would really check the floors out and the trunk to..these cars will rust out bad in those areas given half the chance, and with it sitting on the ground. also with the rust showing around the windshiels, that whole area is probably gone...id offer 300 or walk..now if it started up and ran, then i could see 500 easy..do what i did for floors, 3/4 inch treated plywood.....

Take I20 to HWY 14 go right. It is on your right after John Soules plant. I can speak some street spanish and that does not bother me at all. The attitude is what I can't handle. There was a guy in Tyler who did a thread
called tavenners junkyard thread or something like that? It has pictures of a few of the trucks. I was telling someone on here the other day they had a front painted bumper on a 67 and they told me a $100. I told them they were mucho loco. There is an old guy there on Sat who is cool. He told me $150
for an auto/tilt column I just haven't picked it up because of the 69 I bought last week and this possible 71 Malibu thing.

aright, one last question, was the hood broken, or could you not figure out how to open it?

brak 05-30-2007 11:37 PM

Re: 71 Chevelle pics WIW????

i would pay $700 for that in a heart beat...

the fact that it has buckets with the center console, makes it worthwhile in my eyes. they alone are worth some serious coin, as most came with the bench and column shifter, and practically everyone doing a restoration wants buckets...

If you don't take it let me know, because i will snatch it up...
I bought a 72 SS back in high school (1994) when nobody wanted a chevelle, I sold it in 2000, and have been kicking myself ever since :whine:

I found the pull lever no problem. If you notice there must be some kind of prob with the latch becase the grill is broken right where you could manually open the latch. I beat on it, but the damn mosquitos were leaving spots the size of quarters and I stayed as long as I could stand it.

1970bowtie 05-30-2007 11:48 PM

Re: 71 Chevelle pics WIW????

you have to pull the lever all the way out and lift the hood while the lever is all the way out, then release the leaver. its kind of tricky

The Malibu was at first the top trim level of the Chevelle line, and it replaced the Chevelle name entirely after 1977

I'm really not sure why people have such distain for the malibu package, it was available with the SS option, the only down side was you couldn't get the "Heavy Chevy" option in 71/72 (Base model with special striping and apearance mods) but the 454 big-block was offered with the "SS" package and not available with the "Heavy Chevy" option, so what's the big deal...

What do you think the most somebody else would pay for it? I can't help but ask because you obviously have more knowledge on this that I do. I wish I had digital picts of the 70 I bought froma buddy for $750 and had around 1999 for a year and never got running then sold for $1750. I gave it away. It would be worth an easy $6000-9000 today. I also had a 69 which I drove only a couple of days before driving it into the back of a van when I was sixteen. Had to part it out atleast I didn't lose money on it parting it out!

Re: 71 Chevelle pics WIW????

they're on a scale similar to our trucks, and as such it really depends on the rust factor, but the buckets are a plus.

if the floor and trunk are in decent shape, I would venture a guess of 1500 on the low side 3000 on the high depending on how bad a person wanted it...

I saw a 72 SS with a 454 go for 6500 last summer, and i'm betting it was in worse condition that that one (MN Salt car)...

I am going to sleep on it, but more than likely see if I can get it for $500.
I may turn it for profit or I may keep it. The story to the wife is investment.
Maybe then maybe not who ever knows?

Re: 71 Chevelle pics WIW????

They are all chevelles...the "Malibu", "Malibu 350", "Heavy Chevy" and "SS" are all just different levels of the Chevelle model. Similar to LS or LT on a new truck or something.

That one is pretty rough, but of course I'm used to California vehicles. But for that price I don't see how you can go wrong. The console, shifter and Lower control arms could bring that. Around here the IMCA modified race cars all run chevelle front clips and the lower control arms can bring some money after a guy gets put in the wall.

Good Luck,

Re: 71 Chevelle pics WIW????

Of course, as stated before check the floor pans and trunk floor. Also look at the frame right at the wheel arch and toward the rear bumper. They are bad about rusting there. The extra chrome on the back area around the windows is because it had a vinyl top, another bad area for rust. The buckets and console and shifter alone are worth an easy 400 in the shape they are in if functional. If the motor isn't stuck it should be a 3970010 block and four bolt main with possible small valve double hump heads with bolt holes. If not double humps they are a 497 casting . If there is no kickdown cable from the carb it is a turbo 400. To know for sure look up above the gas pedal under the dash and look for a switch on a bracket with an orange and a white wire.

It is funny this post came up when it did. Yesterday over lunch I just happened to head over to chevelles.com to see what is going on over there. After my truck is done (I know it is never really done) I plan on attacking my 1972 Malibu.

The "Chevelle" was the base package. "Malibu" was a trim level above that. "SS" was then above that. You needed the Malibu package to get to the SS package. In fact some factory original SS cars have "Malibu" emblems on the door panels. There is always debate on this at chevelles.com but my take on it is the days the SSes got Malibu door panels were the days the factory was short on SS door panels.

That car in the pictures is rough. They don't sit outside well. The rust below the rear window is a usual problem area on these cars. Water gets between the bottom of the opening, below the window and has nowhere to go. It doesn't matter if it had a vinyl top or not, water puddles there. Some folks drill a little hole in that channel and then tack on a tube that they run into a drain hole in the trunk.

Disk brakes were NOT standard until 1973 so you don't know if you have disks up front unless you look. I own a power DRUM 1971 Malibu so the presence of a power booster on the firewall means nothing.

The good thing is the disk brake upgrade is common and the parts are available. Disks were standard on 1971 and 1972 Monte Carlos and were available on all other A-bodies in 71 and 72. If you see disks on a Skylark, Cutlass, 442, etc. in the junk yard they'll work. The spindles swap in directly with no change to ball joints. You just bolt them in, run new hard lines, plum in the proportioning valve, and go. The front disks on my 1972 Malibu came off of a 1971 Monte that served me well as a winter beater for many winters.

Whats it worth? Yesterday over lunch I was amazed at what they are getting for anything Chevelle. I would look at some of the hulks they are selling on the classified section on chevelles.com. If you can get that car for $500 and have to part it out, you'll be money ahead.

They were reproducing the rear quarter panels for a long time but I heard they stopped again. I hope not, I could use a pair. Other than that you can get most every piece of sheet metal from goodmark and other suppliers if you are planning on a re-do.

I'm WAY biased but I'd say go for it.

A couple of pictures while I'm at it. The dusty one is a shot of both of them in my crummy old garage. A developer made me an offer on that piece of property that I couldn't refuse so that garage is in a dump some where and a house sits there now.

The second picture is after I put a new set of ralleys and tires on the convertible in 2005.

Finally, since this is the 67-72 truck page, a picture next to my (mostly) 1970 pick-up.

Well I pulled the trigger this morning. The guy is in no hurry to let me get it though because a couple of pallets of rock and other junk needs to be moved to pull it out with the tractor. Maybe I'll get it next week he has a fishing tournament this weekend. Ended up at $700.
