BBC is in>>>Pics>>

Hello Everyone, a while back I was here asking about adapting a 73+ engine crossmember to my 72 K5 for my SBC to BBC swap. Well I did it and thought I would share some pics..they are kinda dark, sorry. TOo much black paint...

Cain't wait to drive my K5 again :burnout: :bowtie:

The Xmember was kinda tuff to get in and lined up but it did fit. Now I will beable to remove the oil pan without lifting the engine :metal:

You know I'm a droolin'!!

 DAMN

bouncytruck 10-11-2004 03:23 PM

Nice! Did you have any firewall problems or did the cross member solve that problem?

Burt4x4 10-11-2004 04:04 PM

I did have to bang bang on the firewall a lil bit, but not too bad. The crossmembers main function is to allow the oil pan to be dropped with out moving the engine. Well that and the ORD engine mounts work too :)

Sooooon... :burnout:

Yukon Jack 10-11-2004 04:46 PM

Burt, can you get a close up pic from the side showing the frame and engine so I can get an idea of how high your engine is sitting? I'm wondering if the new crossmember your using allows the engine to sit lower than if you had used your stock crossmember and mounts. I just happen to now have a crossmember from a 78 4x4 that I could use if that would help my situation, I definitely want to drop my cab down a bit.

Burt4x4 10-11-2004 05:39 PM

Yup sure can, well I just have to remember once I leave work! hahahaha

I will try to get some better lighting too, so the black doesn't all blend together.
I'll try to post up tonight, again as long as I remember...getting old you know  :banghead:

Burt4x4 10-12-2004 10:39 AM

Thought I would just post them up here...

Damn nice set-up ...

Looking Good

I'm not familiar with your fuel delivery system. Can you explain type and requirements as well as expected gains over stock quadrajet to a rookie?

Burt4x4 10-13-2004 11:10 AM

Hey Cheyenne10, What you see there is EdelBrock Multi-Point Fuel Injection.
The intake comes complete with everything needed to convert a carbed rig into FI. This unit comes with a hand held controll box so no need for a laptop to tune it. I hear tuning is or can be a pain...I guess I'm gonna find out. But like everything once it's set right then :burnout: time to ROCK!! :burnout:
Oh ya the version I got in the Performer type(idel to 5500) not the high reving RPM version.
This rat was built for all lowend torque, yer basic stump puller :bowtie: :metal:

71jimmy 10-13-2004 12:35 PM

That FI looks sick. I may also go that way when I rebuild my motor. One thing I'm curiuos about, do you need to build the motor differently for FI versus carb?

:gmc:

Burt4x4 10-13-2004 02:02 PM

Well yes and no. FI does like higher compressions but you can bolt this set to an orginally carbed engine with no changes. Edelbrock will need to know the cam specs inoreder to burn the chip that goes in the computer to run the FI.
This 454 was built around the MPFI intake. The whole engine was built to the specs for lowend torque & fuel injection. CompCams recomended the cam grind to match the lowend torque and fuel injection. I ended up with at least 9:1.1compression(engine guy said with the oversized valves he used will increase the compresion simply due to there size reducing the chamber volume..or something like that hahahaa. This is my first build up so I am still learning all the gearhead talk and stuff :bowtie:

71jimmy 10-13-2004 07:28 PM

Ok, so I better decide bt FI or Carb before I start the build. I'm thinking along the same lines as you, more torque, but will rebuild my 350. Thanks

jamie72 10-13-2004 09:35 PM

thats too damn nice!!!
so what will the fi setup cost a guy?? i`d love to do that to my next truck prodject..
keep us posted! :metal: :metal:

Cross member swap

Hey to get that cross member to work did you just drill new holes in the engine mount bracket and use the original cross member holes ?

Well not quite that easy, let me try to explain how I got it to fit.
Two of the original holes are used:
http://www.norcalbigdawgs.net/Galler...05/bbcpass.jpg
See the bolt head on the top of the frame rail that is on the left, that is one hole, the other hole is the bolt head inbetween the shock and bumpstop bracket.

So with the engine bolted to the tranny, still hanging from the cherry picker, I bolted the two frame horns useing only the two bolts I just mentioned, snug not torqued down.
Then I bolted the engine mounts to the engine.
Next is to get the engine mount bolted to the frame horns.(still no drilling)
Then bolt the crossmember it self to the frame horns(not the frame).
Still the only bolts actually in the frame are the original two holes perside(no drilling yet), OH ya I did drill out the original holes cuz I upgraded the bolt size from stock.

Anyway once you get the crossmember in like that then whip out your favorite drill and start drilling holes, somthing like 16bolts all together to hold that sucker down.
Now you have a crossmember that will alow you to drop the oil pan with no engine movement needed :flag: :metal:

Hope this made sence if not let me know :burnout: :burnout:
