Chucks SWB Fleetside
I got the itch to start another project and started looking for some parts. I first found a frame for sale by a member and he also had a bed that had been part of his project so I got that too. I got Mike (fine 69) to bring it to me along with a cab that I bought from him. It came from AZ.
As for the plan for the truck I am still undecided on what front clip I want to put on it. It is going to look like a stripped down truck with somethings hidden. The cab is a 68 GMC. I'm not sure if I'm going that route yet. It is a very good cab with almost no rust just surface rust. The top of the roof has the paint worn off down to the brown primer as does some spots on the pillars and doors. The cab has a high hump so I won't have any issues with the 454. The frame has a 73 and up front end on it and a 5 lug rear also. I haven't taken the cover off yet. The bed consists of new bedsides and a nice tailgate and a headgate that I may or may not use..Haven't decided yet. It also has cross sills for a wood bed. I also have some stainless steel bedstrips coming from Dave that were left behind. Heres some pics. I'll get more up asap. http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/l...SANY0001-3.jpg http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/l...SANY0002-3.jpg http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/l...SANY0003-4.jpg http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/l...SANY0004-3.jpg http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/l...SANY0005-3.jpg |

Re: Chucks SWB Fleetside
I took the windshield out and only found this surface rust and the seam sealer was dried out.

Re: Chucks SWB Fleetside
Really solid looking cab! Heck all of it looks solid! I had the pleasure of driving through AZ in the summer. Man, there were rust free trucks all over. they just keep putting drivetrains in them and keep driving them. Crazy!

Re: Chucks SWB Fleetside
If anybody is looking to do a project and doesn't want rust you almost have to get one from out west. I am not used to having a cab sitting on rockers. Mine have always been too weak.
I cleaned some on the frame. It looks like the frame had been blasted at some point and partially primed. The frontend looks to have been cleaned and painted. http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/l...ANY0002a-1.jpg |

Between the cab and bed it's almost like cheating on a test! My vote is for "68 Chevrolet clip" :D You already have the tailgate! |

Re: Chucks SWB Fleetside
Thanks for all the comments guys. I hope this one turns out nice. I did find a radio delete the other day and popped it in to see how it fit. They fit really tight with those factory clips. I will have some tunes in it though. I can't sing good enough to keep myself entertained.

Re: Chucks SWB Fleetside
I got an early Christmas present from my wife. Now I can blast the frame and my bed cross sills. Also the bottom of the cab too. I wish it would warm up some though.

Re: Chucks SWB Fleetside
I put this thing together so I could regroup and have some room. Its just loosely put together. I don't think I'm going to use the front clip. I would like to find a 68 GMC clip. I'll keep looking.

Re: Chucks SWB Fleetside
Looks good for throwing it together. Should be able to do that to mine sometime after the first of the year. Can't wait to see it back together!!!

Re: Chucks SWB Fleetside
I'm going to wait till it warms up a little here before I blast anything. In the meantime I'll keep collecting parts. I still need to get the bed strips from the board member so I can work out the bed wood. I've never had one with the wood before, other than a stepside. I'll also look for a 68 GMC clip. I am not going to get in a hurry on this one. I'm going to enjoy the build. I like less metal work as i can get away with. I'm getting lazy in my old age.
So far Ive decided that my interior color is going to be bright blue. My door panels are that color and I just got some visors from southern c10 that I'll use. Does anyone make a standard seat pattern in bright blue? I mean without the scrolls. |
Re: Chucks SWB Fleetside
WOW ! I thought cabs like that only existed in fantasies. I know you might not want to disclose this, but what was the total cost to get that thing to your door ? sure it wasn't cheap ,but it sure will save a lot of work.

Re: Chucks SWB Fleetside
Im with you the better metal you start with the better off you are . It takes long enough to get one painted , metal work just adds to it .

Man that is one clean cab you got there. It would sure be nice to start a build off with something that nice. Good luck, I'll be watching this one also.

So for 3000 you basically got a rust free rolling chassis. I had 3300 into my longbed and have spent a ton to get it rust free so you're miles ahead. I plan on doing similar to you on my next build. |
Re: Chucks SWB Fleetside
I dont think I'm going to use the front clip. I got it from another parts truck.I want a 68 gmc frontend.
