Need Name or Part Number

1 Attachment(s)
I'm trying to keep my truck as original as possible including the emissions stuff. My truck is a 72 with 35/350 and factory A/C. On the passenger side there is a hose that goes form the Air Cleaner to the valve cover and I want to replace the "thing" that goes in to the valve cover. I know it has arcs in it but can't sem to find a listing for it and do not know the proper name of it. I would like to replace it, does anyone know where to buy one or have name and/or part number for it?

If my memory serves me correctly it's called a spark arrester.

It is called a flame arrestor.

Re: Need Name or Part Number

whats in the valve cover on the other side generally there is a grommet and then the PCV valve in the cover while yours appears to simple be jammed into the valve cover...

I have never seen or heard of a flame arrestor on a vehicle except for a race vehicles air cleaner being made of flame resistant materials but could be wrong here

Here is an image of a simple PCV Valve OEM numbers could be as follows
25040145, 25040148, 25043355

Is this it? https://scontent-ord1-1.xx.fbcdn.net...8a&oe=57A26BAF This came off of a 350ci 72' C-10 $30 shipped...

As stated above, it's a flame arrestor. It is not considered to be a normal service replacement item. Why do you feel you need to replace it? My 1969 service manual recommends this:
"Remove the flame arrestor and wash in solvent, then dry with compressed air."

I believe as long as it permits the free flow of air, all is well.

Thanks, and that is why I probably cant find one. I didn't realize they lasted the life of the vehicle. I just thought it'd plug up over 40 years and thought its time to replace. I guess i should get a Service Manual for the truck.

Okay did some more looking through catalogs and for 72 400 BBC and 350 SBC I found a flame arrestor part number 6262992 it's not shown in a diagram though or else I would have scanned one in for us

I'm still running my original (119,000+ miles) as long as I can blow through it without restriction, I'm happy. I've never cleaned it that I can recall.

Re: Need Name or Part Number

So, does the flame arrestor have a one way valve inside to prevent possible backfire flame from entering inside the valve cover?

No. It's free flowing both directions. It appears to have metal "louvers" (probably a series of them) which apparently block a backfire from entering the valve cover. It's visible from the valve cover end. I've never looked at one from the carb end. Some other Chevys (Corvettes, etc.) used a screen-like dome filled with a metal mesh which I believe was inside the air cleaner.

Here's a 1972 service manual link from Hatzie's thread. Look at pages Engine 6-6 and Engine 6-7.

Oops... that didn't work. Here's the link to the thread.

This is what it looks like at the valve cover end.

I appreciate all your help but t 49 and 55.00 US diallers plus shipping and what the Government takes, I pulled mine today and could blow through it so I'll keep it for now.

But, I added some that are less expensive!

Your memory isn't so bad. Spark arrester is pretty damn close! I think it sends the same message.

Re: Need Name or Part Number

So my spark arrester was hardly letting any air through - it was serious caked with old oil. I have it about 90~95% opened up now I wasn't able to get it off the hose and I ended up cracking it (at the 90 degree bend).

Anyone got a lead on the hoses?

Grumpy old man gave a link to a marine engine supply here in this post:
https://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/...05#post8858005
There is also discussion on that thread and some other threads about using heater hoses but I'm not sure I would take that approach because it would not be fuel and oil resistant material (EPDM rubber that Gates part #28475 is made of is not fuel and oil resistant).

Rich72C10 09-30-2021 07:31 PM

Re: Need Name or Part Number

Thanks I popped over there - agreed about using heater hoses too.

I only crack my hose a bit on the inside 90 degree bend (did not break it in half), so I wrapped it with normal black electrical tape and then used engine bay wire fabric wrap tape over that. Though I want to get a proper replacement.

On my flame arrester, it was so clogged with gunk I could hardly push air through it (I'd say 95% blocked). It was great to read all I needed to do is "un-gunk" it! I have a feeling that wasn't very good it not letting air through.

dmjlambert 09-30-2021 07:56 PM

Re: Need Name or Part Number

I soaked mine in gasoline and I'm sure you could use something like Gunk as well. The PCV valve is another thing to check, if the flame arrestor was gunked up the PCV valve and hose would probably be worse.

Rich72C10 09-30-2021 08:13 PM

Re: Need Name or Part Number

I used a butt load of carb cleaner on it.

So in the last two days:
New Oil Cap
New PCV Grommet and PCV valve (I had already replace the PCV valve some time ago but didn't get a right angled one).

Today my new Grommet for the fire arrester came in, this was the first time I actually looked up inside the arrester or paid it any attention to it at all. Seriously, it was like someone packed it with grease or more like black playdough!

Replacing the cap/grommets came about because they were all leaking/oozing oil around where they should be sealing. The cap gasket and old grommets were hard/worn out. But now perhaps that arrester was causing a venting issue?
