Title says it all... share what your best junk yard find to date has been! ("Barn finds" welcome also)

I'll start with this; MINT bench seat out of a 1976 Silverado C20 that my dad and I found at Pick N Pull and put into my 1975 High Sierra C25

I have two C50/60/70 clusters with the tach/fuel gauge combo, a few "trailering special" emblems, the front-of-bed to cab camper special shock absorbers, the camper special brackets that pass through bedside and bolt through bed support, flip down dome light...I forget what all I have found.

I would have to say probably the dual exhaust pipes that I put on my old '86 a year or so ago. Found the pipes cheap, and then had Summit coupons to complete the whole thing for about 60 bucks out of pocket. Crazy deal for something that would have ran 200-300 just for the pipes from an exhaust shop.

Years ago when I was into VW Bugs. I found a 2332 race motor with Gene Berg 51mm Webers, and a bunch of other performance stuff to go with it. I got it all for about $500 otd, and sold it to a friends dad for almost $4000 2 days later.

I found a fuel injection unit off a 1961 corvette on a shelf in a 76 station. It had the plenum but off a different year. I bought it for $300 and sold it the next weekend for $1400. Good money for a 17 y/o. This was about 1987. Matt in Reno

Re: Your best junkyard find

My best was an almost mint dash pad, was at a local wrecking yard and after making the rounds and came up with nothing I figured I take a quick look in a pretty beat square body utility truck. Well I opened the door and there it set mounted on the dash, I almost couldn't believe it since things tend to get picked over quick there. Well I pulled the dash pad and $20 bucks later my interior was a whole lot nicer.

Sometimes my truck reminds me of that Johnny Cash song. I think there's more junkyard parts on it than not, but most people would never know the difference. :D

Some of my more recent parts rescues:
'73 GMC grill w/brackets no cracks - $20
'79 tach dash - $20
'80 tach dash - $25
matching set of rust free doors w/glass and door panels - $45
old warn winch bumper from the 80's - $45
16" HD 2500 wheels w/GMC covers - $50

I found an 80 Silverado reg. cab dually with a perfect tach dash and a 73-74 truck next to it with a tach dash AND that truck also had a 77 tach cluster sitting on the bench seat minus the Speedo! I thought I was on candid camera I couldn't believe my luck! I also scored a MINT orange bench seat from a 75 C25 GMC pickup as well-it had a seat cover on it prolly since it was new-all original material in bright freakin orange.....too cool to pass up.

Thats awesome! My blazer has an orange interior in almost perfect shape, Mandarin Orange to be exact...I dig it!
Love this thread, reading about people out there rootin' through the junk to save treasures.

Re: Your best junkyard find

Yeah....a friend of mine was building a black 67 stepside, longbox and it had an orange painted interior but a black padded dash and a worn out black bench seat....I brought him that perfect OEM seat and he was blown away-totally "made" that interior work! I went back for him to grab the orange seatbelts which needed a cleaning but were nice with good plastic and the orange sunvisors. I think in all it cost me about $50.

Re: Your best junkyard find

I kept the old, worn-out seatcover on it so the yard wouldn't realize how nice it really was.....after some careful cleaning, it looked like brand new! Only one I've found like that so always check under the old seat covers....ya never know!

Went up to a small mom & pop yard just to look around, I found a nice complete set of headliner trim for my 74. I pulled it all out and walked back up to the half fallen down office, The ole man looked at it and asked "you spent the time taking all that out" ?

I said..... Yes sir what's the damage, He said "just take it son"..... SCORE !!!

Re: Your best junkyard find

Not truck related but about 8 years ago I found a complete 1979 bucket seat Oldsmobile cutlass Calais with all black interior. I asked how much for all of the interior just for kicks....it was Mint! The guy said what...you want to pull it all out? I replied yep, from the dash to the rear package shelf and carpet to headliner....basically I want all the interior. He said well, if you're willing to pull it all yourself, you can take it all for $75. After I nearly fainted, I ran back down and got to work.....about 45 minutes later I had it all out.

Kind of a junkyard/barn find. 56 Ford F1, with a 354 hemi and push button torqueflite. Lots of guys tried to buy it, I just happened to be in the right place at the right time. $500 and a plugged fuel line later, I drove it on the trailer.

One of my better junkyard finds, I went just to look around one day and found a mint dashboard for my 1983 Malibu just sitting bare in the back of an EL Camino. I grabbed that fast and paid $20 for it. Original uncracked ones go for over $200 if you can find one. Another time at the same yard I scored a clean tach dash from an El Camino for $20 as well. sold that one for $100.

Best truck score so far was the mint C60 tach dash I got from a guy parting one out in my town. Best part is the tach works great! Paid $30 for it.

I love this tach! How was it wired into the gauge cluster? Manually or through the circuit board?

The spot where the fuel gauge is in your picture is where my "Fasten Seat Belts/CHOKE" lights are currently. I'd love to find one of these and put my original gauge cluster back in with this addition!

gmachinz 12-11-2013 05:58 PM

Re: Your best junkyard find

I've had a few of the big series tach clusters.....they require NO re-pinning. They literally are a plug n play cluster.

MalibuSSwagon 12-11-2013 09:16 PM

Re: Your best junkyard find

Yes the main plug requires no re-pinning to work. I dropped in my original C10 speedo into the cluster housing and installed it. The tach has a separate harness for power, ground and tach signal. Real easy

8lugnutz 12-11-2013 09:27 PM

Re: Your best junkyard find

I know how the tach is wired, I was referring to the fuel gauge wiring. So if I understand you, you put the C60 cluster in your truck and just swapped out the speedo? What I would want to do is swap my fuel gauge for the tach/fuel combo gauge, which isn't a direct matchup with the circuit board I have.

gmachinz 12-11-2013 09:42 PM

Re: Your best junkyard find

Here's what I did-using my existing unmodified cluster plug-in on my 78 K20 I had at the time which had gauges and a brake light indicator, I dropped in a 79 C60 tach cluster and instead of using a BRAKE indicator where the vacuum gauge was which is independant of the C60 printed circuit, I installed a factory clock in its place. So I ended up with a factory clock and a complete, working C60 tach cluster. No repinning was required.....I just plugged in my existing instrument cluster plug-in and it all worked. Since you have electric gauges being an 80, you can use any C60 tach cluster from 77?78 and up. I'm not sure what year the big trucks went from mech. to electric oil pressure. Usually, 60 psi is electric, 80 psi is mechanical. Hope this helps more than confuses....lol.

MalibuSSwagon 12-11-2013 10:43 PM

Re: Your best junkyard find

My C60 cluster was from an 85, and it had an electric 80 PSI gauge, which I later swapped in, since my 60psi gauge went kaput. works perfect.

Best way to do this swap is to use the big truck cluster housing, since the fuel gauge pins are lower, plus the cutout for the tach terminals.

I wondered that but the temp gauge is in Fahrenheit...unless they all were. I would assume those would be Celsius.
