Fuel filler options
Im now putting the 69 short bed back together and Im second guessing my orignal plan of putting my fuel filler behind the left tail light. I was thinking of getting a fuel door from the scrap yard but really hate cutting up a nice orignal bedside. What do you guys think??? Lets see what you have done???

Re: Fuel filler options
I like when they are in the tail light...and I also don't like when people cut the bedside to put one in.

Re: Fuel filler options
i like when tanks are in the cab
your truck do what you want to it you could always chop up the shortbed and make it into a longbed to b different |
Re: Fuel filler options
Had planned on doing the side door thing, but I think I have decided to go with a camaro tank and license plate filler:

Re: Fuel filler options
I had to think about what i use my truck for before i decided, I haul stuff, i may put a camper on it and i pull a trailer so that rules out the rear license plate area and anywhere inside the bed. That left me with the rear light or a fuel door on the bedside.
The frame being a long bed 3/4t put the tank in my opinion too far from the rear ( again with a tow reciver) of the bed to do a light fill.. |

Re: Fuel filler options
I am also doing the Camaro tank with the fold down license plate. No cutting the bedside or floor.

Re: Fuel filler options
I started the same thread in the 73-87 section. I have a dually that I am replacing the saddle tanks with a burb tank and have the same dilemma. I think I am going to do the taillight option but maybe you want to keep an eye on this thread also.
Good luck! http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=439908 Posted via Mobile Device |
Re: Fuel filler options
I have a customers truck that I am going to put a blazer tank into. My plan is to move the filler neck to the rear behind the license plate.

Re: Fuel filler options
Don't have any pics loaded in the computer right now but when I moved my in-the-cab tank to the rear behind the axle I put the fuel filler inside the bed on the left side wheel well tub, bout mid-way up the back side. Used a screw on type fuel cap/fill tube from a early 90's truck. Had to do some tube bending and such but it fills well with no problems. If I can find the pics on a disk I will try and post them.

I like em done in the bedside with a later model door. 99 percent of the people would have no idea that it wasn't stock.

Lots of great ideas! Keep em coming, I'm gonna do mine one of these days!

Re: Fuel filler options
I've pondered on this as well. I like the taillight idea and especially the marker light idea but it looks pretty cumbersome trying to get the pump nozzle in there. I've never seen it done in person so maybe I am wrong. At this point I am leaning towards grafting in a fuel door. I think everyone I have seen is a square door, I am considering using an 88-98 style truck filler which is round. I think it might go better with the body lines, not sure though...
Heres a random pic for reference. http://www.moldestuket.com/gmcsierra15.JPG |

We installed a late model fuel door in the rear panel.
I used a filler neck cover out of a 80's model blazer to cover the filler neck in the bed. It looks great. I don't have a pic of that but you'll see the result when you look at the way its used in the blazer. I am a big fan of moving the tank to the rear. More room in the cab . The interior really opens up behind the bucket seats. Good Luck |

I have seen a few round doors here on the forum that were from an S-10, thats what i got from the junk yard, that and a 1 1/2" filler neck as they also have a 1" one that i read to stay away from for slow filling reasons. I have not installed the door yet but hope to soon, you will need to make a tunnel that goes on the inside of the bed and wall to allow for the filler neck to pass at a decent angle but if ya plan it right it will be a pretty small tunnel, you may also want to modify the filler neck to lessen the angle. |
Re: Fuel filler options
This is what I did for my 67 panel. I don't like the recess for the finger so I decided to go with one from a Plymouth Voyager Van and use a cabe to pop the door open. Here is a link, it's not done yet but it gives you a good idea.

Re: Fuel filler options
I used a Perko filler cap that is vented to the tank for filling and to outside air for running (won't pull a vacuum)
I welded a ¼-20 nut inside my light housing and a fender washer outside. A ¼-20 bolt is my hinge. http://i1106.photobucket.com/albums/...er/0110003.jpg The bulb housing was cut out of the lens frame; a back and bushings were welded in place. The bottom is slotted to route wires http://i1106.photobucket.com/albums/...er/0110013.jpg This plate was welded in the stake pocket http://i1106.photobucket.com/albums/...er/0110007.jpg A 1 ¾” piece of muffler pipe was bent to 90 with one end stretched to 2” to match the filler on my fuel cell. A piece of 1-1/2” muffler pipe was welded in the other end to match my filler neck. http://i1106.photobucket.com/albums/...er/0110008.jpg A push/pull cabinet hinge was used to hold it closed and open it. http://i1106.photobucket.com/albums/...er/0110021.jpg http://i1106.photobucket.com/albums/...er/0110022.jpg I’ll need to drop my FCG tank ~1” to keep filling downhill. http://i1106.photobucket.com/albums/...er/0110016.jpg I still have some trimming to do and I’ll close up my stake pocket. I’ll also weld my 90 in to keep things from rubbing. |
Re: Fuel filler options
Wes that filler cap looks great, maybe i'll think about getting one.
Also per the taillight filler, it does require some trimming of the structural supports so if your going to hual stuff in the bed its something to concider also. |

pdr510 ...... do you have any more pictures of your setup? That is the method I have been considering for mine as well.

There are several guys on here that have the filler in the top of the bed rail, I can not remmber their screen names though. Here are a few pics i have saved on my computer from someone on the forum, I'm sure someone will recognize the truck.
::: again, these are not my pics so I dont have any information on the setup. I just saved them while researching for my own setup::::: |

Nice work tinkerdad, yours is alot like mine. I think it was John Fabris that made the nice stake pocket filler. For a hidden filler, I like the side marker light option too, but I think if I went that route, I would use the Hagen cap that doesn't require it to be removed to fill your tank. Here is mine.

Re: Fuel filler options
Thanks HuggerCST, I read your thread several times before starting. I hope my finished project looks as nice as yours.
