'68 C30 Cummins swap
Picked up a fairly clean old farm truck to build a work truck for myself, it's a cab and chassis that has had the frame shortened and a flatbed installed. I work 6-7 days a week and don't have the time to drive anything fun these days, that's about to change!
Truck has a nice running 350 with a PTO 4 speed and an Eaton rear end, I bought a '93 D350 donor vehicle with an intercooled 12v 5 speed and Dana rear axle. Plan to do the mechanicals and get it on the road ASAP and focus on the body over the winter eventually turning it into a crew cab. http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e2...097FA8CA4C.jpg http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e2...1759DF6751.jpg http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e2...7732EFA602.jpg http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e2...5F5B99474C.jpg |

Re: '68 C30 Cummins swap
Been working 7 days a week and lucky enough to work an 8 today so I had a chance to really look the truck over. It still has the build # on the passenger inner fender and original paint on everything except the drivers door and rocker. Some rust on the d.s. rocker, one spot on the headliner, and a small spot on door. It's a cab and chassis that was shortened at some point, the longhorn bed came with the deal and only has rust in the 6" extensions so I'll be welding up the seam.

Re: '68 C30 Cummins swap
I see them all. Very cool project, King. I like the Dodge pictures. I used to run out of a '70 C/30 and could never get the idea of a diesel conversion out of my head, but moved to another truck. Are those stainless acorn caps on stock castle-type or acorn nuts for lug nuts?

Re: '68 C30 Cummins swap
Thanks, I wasn't planning on taking any pics at the scrap yard....a guy was firing up a loader to put forks on when the claw came over and picked it up, luckily I was quick enough with the phone!
The lugs are tapered acorns and don't belong on there, the wheels are the later 16". Hopefully I can work on it this weekend and post some progress pics! |
Re: '68 C30 Cummins swap
Any patina preservation experts on here? I've painted plenty of cars and panels but never tried to match anything old and faded, lol. I would like to fix the rust and paint the bed without it standing out too much.
Thanks, Jon |
Re: '68 C30 Cummins swap
Other projects took priority but I'm back at it again! I hope to remove the engine/Trans and install the Cummins tomorrow.

Re: '68 C30 Cummins swap
Very cool truck! I love the cab and chassis DRW trucks with a Longhorn bed. The rotary engine will make a great truck out of it. You should love it. Bump the timing, a fuel pin, gov spring, kdp check, some other gaskets I bet, and you'll be good to go!

http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e2...AFF13D81CE.jpg Trying to get it where I want it so I can figure out the mounts, pretty tight fit! |
Re: '68 C30 Cummins swap
here is what I did for the mounts. Worked pretty well, however the engine in a 2wd set up is very tight and I spent a long time getting the engine sitting exactly where I want it (not easy with a 1300# engine). It fits with a little room to spare on the firewall and a little room to spare with the front cross brace.
Hopefully that truck has a high hump floor or you'll have some serious cutting to do. If it has a high hump, a 1" body lift gives you enough room to fit everything. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=694686 |
Re: '68 C30 Cummins swap
Thanks for the link, your truck looks great!
It has a high hump and after removing the AC compressor I have it where I want it. I plan to build a factory style engine side mount and the '93 lower isolators. For now it's on standby, wife had a baby boy on Thursday(our 3rd)! http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e2...8DDF00946A.jpg http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e2...324440C104.jpg |
Re: '68 C30 Cummins swap
Congratulations on the new little one! Good luck getting any time to work on the C30 now!

Re: '68 C30 Cummins swap
Had a chance to fab the engine mounts out of 5/16" and 1/4" plate.
Hopefully will have the transmission mount done this weekend so I can wire and start the intercooler piping. http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e2...2EA448839E.jpg http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e2...B4B78F9CBE.jpghttp://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e2...723FF84A22.jpg |
Re: '68 C30 Cummins swap
Almost forgot, picked up an '84 CCLB dually frame for my disk brakes, was only $100 and scrapped what I didnt need for $25!
Came with a pair of these hoping I can find 4 more, polished up they would look pretty nice. http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e2...26E74659D5.jpg |

Re: '68 C30 Cummins swap

Re: '68 C30 Cummins swap
This is cool! I build 12v 5.9s at work. I've built 2 in the last 3 weeks and have another block, head and crank at the machine shop as we speak. I've been thinking about building a nasty 12v for my K20. A one inch body lift is no big deal to me.
|
Re: '68 C30 Cummins swap
I didn't have to do a body lift, or any cutting. With engine on the crane I picked it up letting the transmission angle down, once it was past the crossmember I used a floor jack to raise it and roll slowly as the engine came down/in. Have to say I was surprised how well it fit in there(once the AC and heater box were removed). I plan to get the bracket to raise the compressor and I will probably end up flipping the exhaust manifold so it clears.
