my 48 s10 swap
where to start....My grandpa has a 48 chevy 5 window that hes had since growing up. And the s10....or s15 actually. GMC s15 high sierra edition, my grandma HATED this truck. So it worked out for the better tearing into both of them. We bought the kit from AD Engineering(1200 bucks but includes a bunch of stuff and QUALITY parts). First, we took the s10 down to bare frame and mounted and TIG welded the mounts on. Next up was the POR 15 then sprayed it black. Then i rebuilt the entire from suspension/brakes apart from new springs and sway bar. We are going with a 2" front and 3" rear drop from belltech using drop spindles and blocks. I work on this project about 3 hours a day in my auto shop class(hs senior). Feel free to ask me any questions that you have. KEEP THE PIC'S COMING DUDE! looks great so far. how tall are those mounts from the topside of the frame? which brackets are the ones from AD engineering and how many total do they send you? usually the toughest fart of the swap is trimming the area for the core support, around the steering box and then making extenions for mounting the front bumper. i have looked at a few and after talking to a couple guys came to the conclusion that whatever gets them mounted is correct. list all the "road blocks" so other guys don't read into the swap "bolt on". it's one of the most mis -leading terms selling hot rod products today. :metal::metal:

Not trying to post-whore but i want all the info i have out there. The fuel lines and brake lines that run through the frame were left in(taped up when we painted). With the fuel tank we are using the existing one and are going to run the lines from the drivers side(where the s10 originally mounts) to the pass side where the filler is in the truck bed. i will update as the updates come, monday should bring the cab removal and running boards also....im sick of square nuts....

i really doubt anyone here is going to call you a "post whore" especially when their are tons of pic's posted along side. when you say s10 body mounts are you are refering to ones attached to the sheetmetal? i don't speak for anybody else but "keep it coming dude! also thanks for the pro's and cons.:cool::cool:

body mounts meaning the little mushroom shaped 'things'. its hard to explain, they are between the cab and the frame on the s10, they have the piece of rubber then the little 'cap, and the long bolt/washer/nut goes through them

well....i dont know whether to say i love you or hate you, i went down to take pics of the body mounts and noticed that the moron who ordered our new body bushings failed to get us the caps for the bottom too, im SOOO PISSED. He irritated me when he was ordering the stuff(soo slow, ive honestly never dealt with someone like that). And to top it all off i cant find the bucket off all the scrap stuff we took off the s10, which is where the body bushing/caps SHOULD be.....ugh. when my gpa gets back from a volleyball game im gonna have a chat and see if he knows where all this stuff is....grrrr

ONE ADAM 12 SEE THE MAN! don't hate your cheering section most guys your age think old trucks are not cool! thank god your not building a 4x4 YUGO! pictures keep reading from getting boring. hope nobody threw away your parts, that would suck! been hearing alot about this AD engineering kit and when they ask good money for the kits we are the only ones that can police out the junk!

I think were gonna get a wider/bigger washer to put under the existing one for more stability. You can see in the first picture the old rusty looking cap on the bottom? Those are what i need 2 more of. Anyway, i should take pics of this hoist we are using. Its a big ass crane and were puttin a pipe thru the cab then using the lift points to stabilize it(i need to learn to arc weld). But the whole crane is used to take off the cab haha. Should be off tomorrow and il lhave more pics. |

Wow, sorry about the delay on the updates fellas. Where to start....Well we got the motor and trans out of the 'burb. I dunno how much ive updated so ill just go over it all haha. Sent the trans down to TBK for a rebuild, and they hooked us UP. We got corvette clutches and a new torque converter along with a complete rebuild for a very reasonable price. The '48 came up to the shop, i started disassembly last week. I got the front clip off then the box and finally the cab. Meanwhile taking a day to powerwash the 'dogsnot' out of it. Also pulled the motor(anyone need a straight 6:). Pulling the cab off was an adventure. We took off the steering wheel and used a crane(or whatever) to pull the cab up and over it. Then put the cab onto a cab cart with a piece of plywood underneath to protect. I cut out the corners to make it sit flush, it worked out sweet. We rolled the frame out and its now sitting on the pad while we clean up the cab. Onto this week....the cab was waiting to be stripped, so we pulled and pushed and unwired and broke stuff till it was all clean. AKA got all the wiring undone and disconnected it inside. All that is left is the gauge wiring that connected to the motor that will come out tomorrow because we will be pulling the gauges, radio, and hopefully dash also. After that all the class will come out and were gonna scotch brite/soap/water the firewall and such to clean er up then i think were gonna paint it??? I dont for sure know what the plan is. Ill post up pics here in a mintue

It sucks when you have to move a frame out when its got a 3 foot tall steering column on it haha. I guess the pics speak for themselves, ill throw more up tomorrow of progress that we make. |

YEAH DUDE! glad too see those pic's, are those running board "bars" in the pic's bolted to the running boards off the frame or from one of the new mounts from the AD eng.kit? your truck looks pretty solid to start with and i like the one piece windows of the early AD trucks. have you attached all the new mounts to your frame yet or is that how your supposed to use the mount kit. keep those pic's coming along with technical anything. well happy holidays.:)

the running board 'bars' actually slide into the slots on the original running boards. Instead of a nut on the back (since you break them all off getting it apart anyway) you have a bar with threads in it. Ill post up the new running board mounts later. With the kit you get completely new supports and mounts for the running boards. You use the mount(the black shiny deals w/ the rubber) to mount the cab onto the frame. The order is: bolt, washer,(i think were going to put a larger piece of steel or washer in here for extra support/safety) cab floor, delrin spaacer(provided) stock s10 'cap', ADengineering mount, rubber boot, bottom 'cap' washer, nut. Along with the kit they give you a detailed list of what you need. Im done for the week as we have a 5 day break off of school, so monday will bring pulling out the glass.

Ok, i decided to post up pics then comments now, soo pic 1 is the 305 that i will be puttin new rings/bearings in this week. 5 and 8...well 5 is the cart we used to push it around on(thank god for the plywood to save the cab bottom) and PB Blaster...need i say more? pic 9 is of the E-brake linkage, does anyone know how to disconnect it? i tried a little bit but i think itd be easier if i had it laying on the back. If anyone could help that would be swell. the body pics are pretty much what went off to get media blasted(more next post) 11..buick radio, i want to see if my gpa will let me do something with it, i wanna put a new radio in it and use it for my room haha. #12 is the 'cleaned' firewall, removed everything, the wet spot is PB Blaster(stubborn bolts...i win) I have more recent pics but i left my camera at the 'shop cuz i thought i had them all on the comp...me=dummy

About the media blasting. We took the Cab, fenders(with supports and such), hood, and box to Central NE Dry Stripping. I removed all the emblems and such, so its all sheetmetal. The guy has a reputation for being an amazing 'blaster. Really quality, they just expanded and their new facility is ginormous. Ill take pics when i go there next time to pick it up(along w/ the LS1 50's chevy pickup he has). Props to my shop teacher who took me down in his 07 dodge with 2300 on the clock. Its the first bad weather shes seen. That should be all for a week or so, its SNOWING here....yay

oh...and from what i read, people rag on the s10 swap because its the 'poor mans' way of restomodding....i think this is a BETTER way to do it, new age suspension/steering etc thats me...you old farts keep your non-powersteering, non A/C, non disc brakes and such:) just kidding haha

dude! i'm old fart and having driven my fair share of AD and TF trucks the upgrade is a welcome imho! and as for anyone thinking that by using a s-10 chassis is building a poor mans truck must have never really built a real hot rod in their life. i wish my 54' burb and 52' panel both had different chassis under them. its one way of keeping the hobby alive for everyone.:censored:

Alrighty update time, the cab and stuff are mostly done getting media blasted, were gonna go down and take the running boards down too. The 305 i was gonna rebuild it shot, so we thought about rebuilding the 350 in the 'burb but its going to be more cost effective to put a brand spank me new 350 in. The dealer here in town has one ready to go, 1700 ish dollars for a brand new motor. Which takes a huge time load off me and so does the cab gettin media blasted. I also emailed the AD engineering guy and he will be putting up my build on his website. I use the stock front cab mounts and we take out the middle mount, weld a plate in then weld in a piece of angle iron and drill up through the cab and bam were done. Were also going to look at seats on saturday(pics hopefully). that should be all for today, anyone taken apart/fixed/put back in window regulators, im gonna need help, i took em out but i couldnt see how they were arranged inside

Wow, i keep forgetting to update. Well plans have changed slightly. The 305 we were gonna use it toast, so we were gonna use the 350 out of the suburban.....well its not cost effective really, so were buying a GM longblock from the dealer in town. 1700 + our intake(suburban) + manifolds + dizzy and were running. Also, the entire truck is being media blasted. We had early xmas with my bro and his wife and a present to my gpa was his own website. www.jims48.com Props to my brother for doing the whole site by himself, he knows web design a bit haha. Notice all the fancy stuff like the drop shadows and AWESOME donate button(it even works!!). I am now on xmas break so i wont work on it till jan 7 again, but i will have pics of the body all media blasted. My gpa also bought seats out of a 2005 chevy equinox(driver heated seat FTW) with the center console. Its gonna look baaad with the center console out of the equinox too. It has the ebrake handle integrated into the console and its in the middle. Itll take a bit of ingenuity but i think we can get her to work, i think its gonna look tight. Ill try and remember to post pics up tonight. sorry for the delay fellas
