72 2wd project "No Daggum Money"
5 Attachment(s)
So I thought I would catch this one before it's built and start a thread. Not sure how except posting some before pics. I have got absolutely no money to put in this truck but I cannot sell it and I cannot seem to scrap anything. We have been together since 1988. I totaled it in 2006 and bent the frame. Just found a frame with 2wd gear so it will be reborn a 2wd.
I hunt down parts for my other truck and use the leftovers for this one. Can anyone tell me what spindles I have as it did not come with calipers? I need to start hunting junkyards.:waah: |
Re: 72 2wd project "No Daggum Money"
look up the numbers off the frame and find out what year it is. to me it looks like a 71 or 72 frame. you have 5 lug spindles so thats where i would start.

Re: 72 2wd project "No Daggum Money"
This was originally a 4wd frame and the guy who sold it to me said it was his sons and did not know where he got it. This will obviously be a Frankentruck Built from spare parts.
|
Re: 72 2wd project "No Daggum Money"
I agree, its probably 71-72. Could be an older frame, but just use the 71-72 vintage to get calipers.
|
Re: 72 2wd project "No Daggum Money"
Thanks guys! I will start looking! It will have a 12bolt leaf 3.73 posi and th400 and 307 survivor engine.(spare parts) From there I am not sure. I guess I will need a disc proportioning valve?
|
Re: 72 2wd project "No Daggum Money"
Is that a 2wd Blazer or Truck frame? I don't think i've seen one that short with leafs. (that wasn't cut)
Yes you will need a prop valve for the front discs. Well, at least mine has it. |
Re: 72 2wd project "No Daggum Money"
It was originally leaf 4wd. It came retrofitted with trailing arms but no springs or way to mount tops of springs or panhard bar. I had the leaf system on my bent frame so I just took it off and reinstalled it on the new to me frame. Bolt holes were already there. This eliminated the need for the trailing arm crossmember and any modifications needed to it for exhaust. Now I can even use my old exhaust.

Re: 72 2wd project "No Daggum Money"
Well that worked out good for you.

Re: 72 2wd project "No Daggum Money"
The front suspension appears to be the rubber bushed 73-87 version.
Just measure the caliper width. It will be either 1" or 1.25". You will need to know this to by replacement parts. |
Re: 72 2wd project "No Daggum Money"
Would I be able to tell from the rotors? God knows what they are off..

Re: 72 2wd project "No Daggum Money"
after a closer look at your pictures that frontend looks to be a 73-87. the control arms are different and the bushings are different from a 67-72. i have a 84 front on my 4x4 to 2wd conversion. the 73 up calipers are all the same execpt for the hd ones which use a 1.25" thick rotor like all ready mentioned.
|
Re: 72 2wd project "No Daggum Money"
Just measured one rotor and the caliper says 1.18in.. Used up 1.25? Pretty rusty probably cannot turn them. Haven't checked specs. So do I have the heavy duty? Abso freakinlutely love this site !

73-87 has rubber bushings. The rubber brake hose connected to the upper a-arm is a 73-87 give away also. |

Calipers, rotors, bearings and the spindle itself are either HD or Light Duty. Some 81-87 trucks had the Light Duty rotors. Some has the HD rotors. Just tell the auto parts store guy your truck is a 73, and you will get HD rotors and non-metric calipers. |
Re: 72 2wd project "No Daggum Money"
Would have never figured that out ! Thanks Guys! This will be my test pilot for body work as well . Girl was slammed pretty good in the rear :metal:

That's them, plus $10 core. They should come with sliders...

Re: 72 2wd project "No Daggum Money"
Update..Did an axle flip in the rear and not sure what to do in the front. I guess I will start with cutting the springs as this will not cost anything. I think two coils is about the max right? If I need drop spindles I should look for 1973?

I wouldn't cut more than 1-1.5 coils. That's the max. |

OK so I mocked up an engine and tranny in the frame and My center dump exhaust manifolds dump really close to the cross member. I am not sure but did they change the manifolds in 1973 to rear dump style? Or did I put the engine too far forward? It seems to fit well.
|
Re: 72 2wd project "No Daggum Money"
Anybody?
|
Re: 72 2wd project "No Daggum Money"
Those are 4X4 manifolds, two wheel drive manifolds curve back about 45 degrees at the bottom because of engine sitting forward. Also looks like you have the 4X4 rear crossmember (oval hole visible), you need a trans crossmember from a two wheel drive it will have two 3/8 holes for the trans mount. I've heard of guys using a 73-74 crossmember for the trans. Someone asked if this is a Blazer frame or a shortbed truck frame, need to determine this as they are different lengths. Shortbed truck is 115" wheelbase, Blazer, 104"
|
Re: 72 2wd project "No Daggum Money"
So I guess the engine mounts look like they are in the correct position? Does anyone have a picture of these manifolds? I have seen I think the passenger side angled but haven't seen the driver side. I have noticed the 73 manifolds are much different from 72. Driver side is dumped further back and passenger is angled. I would like to try to use these as I have "NO DAGGUM MONEY".
I don't see why this cross member will not work. Please enlighten me on that. Is the correct one much different? I drilled the holes and alignment seems ok. Oh.. and yes I have determined that this is indeed a blazer frame. I also own a 4wd swb 1970 and they are very much different. This one has the rear bumper mount cut clean off, but my original still has them. Someone must have put an aftermarket bumper on at one time. But wheelbase is right and mounts are correct. |

Re: 72 2wd project "No Daggum Money"
If the back of the frame appears 'cut clean off' than it is more than likely to be a 69-71 frame. The 72 Blazer frame extends out beyond the body, the earlier ones don't. I cant see from pics posted if the other things you asked are correct. Is your other 4X4 an auto trans?
|
Re: 72 2wd project "No Daggum Money"
Yessir it is. 700r4. So why were the 69-71's like that?
|
Re: 72 2wd project "No Daggum Money"
I believe the turn down in the frame on the rear, took the place of the need for extra brackets for the bumper.
|
Re: 72 2wd project "No Daggum Money"
So I swapped the upper control arms and moved the lowers forward about 3/4" since it was free to do. My brother is an alignment guru so I guess the rest is up to him. I may have some new rotors and calipers but I cannot seem to access my p/m's I think due to this "ATTACK SITE" cra-! I did however get a nice Pro Mig 135 with a big argon tank from my girls brother. It was just sitting in his garage getting banged around so I was able to relieve him of this burden. WOOHOO! Price-"0.00" Gotta love family!

Re: 72 2wd project "No Daggum Money"
OK so thanks to Hart-Rod I finally spent some money and what a guy he is for giving me such a deal! So now I have new rotors and calipers-tie rods, and a sway bar! Thank you sir, you are an amazing guy. Wish I lived closer to you!:metal:
Wish I could have gotten those control arms too but I didn't have NO DAGGUM MONEY! |

OK so I got the new rotors on and went to put the new calipers on the calipers seem to be right but the pads appear to be wrong.any one have some pics of their 73-87 stock brakes installed?I think my inner pad should rest on the outside of the spindle right? Any help would be awesome!!!
|
Re: 72 2wd project "No Daggum Money"
Hard to tell from the pics. The pads should ride on the cross-pins, held in place by the piston spring on the rear, and through the holes on the outer pad.

Re: 72 2wd project "No Daggum Money"
OK so I freshened up the 307ci with a new timing chain (was original plastic type) new front seal and balancer repair kit. While I was getting the plastic chunks out of the oil pickup I decided to get a new oil pump and do the rear main seal and of course new pan gasket. This was all due to the freeze plug with a hole in it behind the starter. I was just going to throw it in and run it till it dies while looking for that great deal on CL.
Well I found it right after I painted up the 307ci. And put new freeze plugs in. Freshly machined .30 over 3970010 casting with brass plugs and new cam bearings. $175.00. Darn long drive through some sketchy rock roads and several 20 ft high bonfires. Thought I was gonna see some chainsaw murderers running around. But I got it. Came with the old pistons/rods and balancer but no crank. Probably didn't pick it up from the machinist. A while back I got a set of 882 heads with screw in studs and guide plates with roller rockers. And so begs the question? 355 or 383 or would that be a 385ci with .30 over? Trouble is I got NO DAGGUM MONEY!:sumo: |
Re: 72 2wd project "No Daggum Money"
Oh yeah. I got the front end all done with new ball joints and bushings tie-rods etc. Also new rear drums. Painted the frame and found my rag joint. And found some 73 era dog dish caps for my steelies. Pics to come...;)
