In the snow. :( :whine:
I guess I got spoiled with the way the 'ole GMC was in the white stuff. Both my old blue CST/20 longhorn and this C/30 totally sucked in the slick stuff.

So how does your truck do in the snow?

I was sooooooooo not ready for this crap. At least I got my brakes adjusted up the other day. :whine:

Honestly I don't drive my truck much on the roads during the winter because of all the salt they use. I do use it quite a bit on the lake however.

Winter doesn't bother my truck, it's happy in the garage as I finish it.

But I LOVE driving in the snow, my 93 Audi S4 kicks a55 in the snow!
Ya gotta love a turbocharged AWD car in the snow!

My daughter who lives in California, always bragged about no snow like some of the guys here but when the wife and I were there (I think it was in the fall of last year) it snowed. Not much but enough to cover the cars ect. She lives in Southern California. I think the town is called Medifee. No she does not live on a mountain. We really gave her a hard time about that. She got snow before we did. People were out taking pictures of the white stuff.

Snow tires and a couple hundred pounds of weight in the back and it does just as good as any other 2wd vehicle, sometimes it thinks it's a 4X4

We only get the melted version of snow down here.

jku72 11-23-2005 06:51 PM

Re: My truck sucks...

The Longhorns are especially bad in the snow with no weight and poor weight distribution. I can say that even a loicker doesn't help, all it does is make the rear go sideways.
However, if loaded, then my truck will go through just amount any depth of snow. A few years back I put tire chains on it, loaded it with 5,000 pounds of pulp, and drove through the woods in February, and we had about 2 feet of snow pack at the time. I hope never to do it again, but that thing was unstoppable once loaded. My trucks winter days are over now.
Unloaded it gets stuck on sloped grass in the summer.

A 4x2 with a big engine under the hood gets hung up when someone Pi$$es on the grass in the middle of a drought if you drive it off into your yard

My C-20 with the Cummins will probably be a real turd when the weather is less than nice out:( Haven't got the driveshafts from the shop yet to try it

I will say though, the C-10's we had over the years would go through nearly anything and it took alot to stop them. The one '69 we had with a 250/3spd had 33's on the rear our neighbor gave us after he traded off his monster jeep..........We'd chain it up and run it all winter like that as 90% of our driving was off road on lanes between farms. We could actually even get around better than our neighbors with 4x4 pickups with snow tires. A few times I remember passing them on the way to the barn in the morning to feed cows shoveling out their rig................Then on my way back I'd stop and help them dig it out  For as much as everyone complains about the little inliner and saginaw 3spds you'd never think they'd hold up.........But they never left us down.

I remember a few dandy storms where we were buckin' snow drifts with the grill, and pushing it with the bumper.......In a 4x2...

Andy throw some ole' Caddy parts in the bed!!!!!!!! That will hold you down!!!!

Re: My truck sucks...

255 60 15" tires all around, cooper cobras to be exact, on a 2wd non posi with no weight in the back. It's not fun, but on the bright side it gets torn apart in two weeks for a re-do anyways.

MylilBowTie 11-23-2005 08:07 PM

Re: My truck sucks...

Try and get a truck load of sand to put in the bed. Should be pretty cheap for weight and if you get stuck you can use it to help get traction.

Remember how bad it got last winter? I bought about 600 (12 50# bags) pounds of rock salt, plus brand new 31x10.50 Kelly SUV Safari tires all around. Did pretty good for a 4x2 I thought. Got enough traction that I couldn't really do a donut from a sitting start.

What was different about the GMC vs Longhorn?

Let's put it this way, my 70 got stuck in the driveway. I finally managed to get it backed up out of the way, then I took my 87 formula to work.

I don't even want to know. Mine spins in the wet grass in the yard. I'd sure hate to see what it does in snow.

Re: My truck sucks...

Bring it on! My old truck has been in snow many, many times and does very nicely, thank you! Should be even better now with decent tires under it (new BFG All Terrains). One thing I love is how it'll crawl until it breaks traction, then spin & keep trying to dig. I've driven other trucks that will start hopping (jumping up & down) severely as soon as they break traction.... not good.

My 70 C-20 with a locker isn`t worth a crap in it, without weight on the back. Weighted down it`s not to bad.

The GMC had no low end torque, a 3.08 gear, wide but fairly soft tires in back (wide should've hurt in the snow) and better weight distrobution.
The Longhorn has 4.10 gears, with 400 some odd ft pounds of torque at like 1200 RPM....give or take. Anything more than idling away from a stop light on DRY pavement and you run the risk of tire slipage. The tires are tall by skinney (235/85 IIRC....37 inch tall) and rock hard. And the aformentioned crappy weight distrabution.

I thought about some balast, but I don't see how I can do it right now. In the next couple months, I'll be moving one sister and her friend, then my other sister and her worthless husband, then my grand mother ... and, I will be getting the rest of my junk out of the soon to be ex wife's place. I'll also be hauling a dozen old TH400's in for rebuild, and I am trying to get a buddy to come off of 50 cattilitic converters... .I get 40 bucks each for them.
Plus, in all reality, I am all the time picking up scrap metal and a couple hundred pounds of rads aren't an uncommon sight in my truck... none of it ever stays in there long though.
I considered a Semi trailer brake drum, filled with concrete, but I have no way to anchor it, and on a plastic drop in bedliner, it'll be all over the place if not tied down, and after the first panic stop, my alluminum snap on bed tool box would be worth it's weight in scrap, and nothing more.

Re: My truck sucks...

Oh I see a little better now. I guss thats what also helped me was the crappy 3.08s and 31s. I have a decent about of torque but doubt anywhere near 400 off idle.

Have any plans for the th400s other than rebuild? What did they come from chevy or bop patterns?

i haven't tried mine in the snow yet see i just got it put my old (go ahead and hit me now) 87 ford f-150 if it wasn't weigthed down i would be doing 360 not touching the gas it happened to me 2 years ago went around an turn at 15 mph backend broke loose started doing 360s lady comeing down the road lkost control and boom both cars nailed each other cops come out no tickets they said it was an act of god. but the insurence companies didn't like us

Re: My truck sucks...

My C20 with a posi Dana 60 would go NO WHERE! A single snow flake would cause it to sit and spin. My brother came out to give me a push a few years ago. He used his PINKIE FINGER! That is all the force required to get my truck moving. How do you live that down to a F150 driver. Very painfull event in my life.
Now my C10 with an open differential drove like it had full time 4x4. Nothing stopped it. When you figure it out please let me know.

da-burb 11-23-2005 10:09 PM

Re: My truck sucks...

and another thing. The next year I added 20- 70# bags of sand. 1400#'s made it ride like a caddy and actually allowed it to move in the snow.

PICKMUP 11-23-2005 10:31 PM

Re: My truck sucks...

You can't beat a 4X4...w/posi...even better!!!
2WDs need a posi and a little extra weight. The posi is worth about 10 times better traction than the one-legger that always spins the stuck/slick wheel.

Re: My truck sucks...

I don't have to worry about snow here in south Texas but mud is another story. I've got 33x12.5x16.5 mudgrips on the back with 4.10 gears and a factory No-Spin, it does pretty good on wet/muddy roads. I have a big homemade steel toolbox in the bed full of welding tools, etc that probably weighs 250 lbs all together, so it's got some good traction.

I've gotta get up a big hill to get to the interstate with 4.11's and 275/60 tires in northern Colo, I know your frustration Andy!

Re: My truck sucks...

I've not had my truck drivable in so long I can't remember what it would do on a dry road much less on snow or ice. Another month or two then I hope it has trouble with traction period. know what I mean. Hey I've got a 70 chevelle 12 bolt with a 3:31 posi. Doe's anyone know if the posi will fit my 12 bolt truck, I know the ring gear and pinion are different but would be nice to use the posi.

Longhorn Man 11-24-2005 12:25 PM

Re: My truck sucks...

bow tie... I am probably keeping one of the TH400's, it is a BOP, and my TH350 is amiing some noise. The rest I am turning in for rebuild (core value).
The Frito Lay rebuild center that we work with is getting closed. All frito rebuild centers will no longer exist come the 4th of Jan. New Tax laws make the rebuild not cot effective. (they must have had a hell of a tax break before huh?)
So my parts guy at Frito is lookin to get rid of everything they have. Frito told him to get rid of it all, and he can have 50% of what he gets out of it.... my core guy is interested in a lot of it, I get X% of what my core guy gives me.... ect.
it all works out. i just wish I could get my hands on sopme of the 4L80E's he has there...I can get up to 2 bills... but frito has a guy who gives him 400...same with the 6.5. My guy can only get like 150 bucks, frito knows a gay that'll give 400. :(
