What drew you to the 67-72 Chevy/GMC Trucks?
 

As I am reading the threads on how you all found your first truck...now the question arises...what drew you to the 67-72 Chevy/GMC trucks in the first place? I bought mine because I think it's is a classic design, plenty of parts trucks avaliable, plus a lot of great vendors who supply parts and information about these trucks. But it all comes down to the fact that I believe these are flat out the best looking trucks of their time period. :fb:

We bought our 67 in 1991 or so but since then the lines on the 67-72 trucks grew on me more than any others :D

When I was young my grandpa's daily driver was a 72 chevy 1 ton dually with a flatbed and stake racks. It was yellow with a white top, black custom interior, 350 and 4 speed.

My dad bought his 67 when I was 11 or 12 and Iwasn't really interested in it. I loved the old fin cars from the 50's but his truck was just "a truck" to me at that age. My first car was a Toyota 4Runner, cool little SUV 4x4, but just too boring for my taste. I wanted a classic SOMETHING. Originally I was shooting for a 59 Cadillac (a.k.a. tuna boat) but my dad was paying for this at the time so it HAD to be an older truck. He didn't want some Titanic of a car blockign the driveway.

So I was looking up trucks of this era and ALMOST bought a 72 3/4 ton. But, as you might have guessed, dad didn't want his son having a big block that gets 2 miles to the gallon.

That's when, on the second search, I found a 67 stepside, just like my dad's, but with a primer body and no windows. A year later; which consisted of body work, a cheapo paint job, a new bench seat, new glass and (THANK GOD!) a 350 small block, I'm up to par with my old man.

For a long time I was still looking at cars like "Christine" but my old truck really grew on me everytime that I drove it. The V8 and my first burnout just blew me away and now this truck is truely staying with me 'til the day I croak. It's actually a muscle car, but a truck. A muscle truck I guess. Now I just need to find me some cheap SS emblems to stick on it.

It's kind of like the 57 chevy ( car )the design grabs your eye when it goes by and it will be hard for chevy to ever make another truck to grab your attention like these trucks do. They served as trucks but when it was time to shine these trucks cleaned up into some of the hottest rides around.

Mine was this... I had been thinking of doing another hot rod for some time.. just wasn't sure what. I had seen a few trucks fixed up running around for a few years and though that it's a pretty cool muscle truck but never really thought of "doing" a truck myself. A friend of a friend told me about a guy that needed to sell his as he moved away and was closing the company warehouse where it was stored. He took it in trade 4 years ago with the intent of fixing it up, never got around to it so it sat for 4 years. I looked at it, looked like a good project, reasonably strait, complete, new 350, new 700R, complete early classics drop with all new front suspension parts, new sway bar, quick ratio power steering box and pump, disks, power brakes, RPM intake, carter carb, HEI distributor, new radiator core, quick silver ratchet shifter, headers and old school chrome wheels. Realizing that most of this was new and still in boxes in the bed of the truck, I know a deal when I see one and then the words "2500 and I will deliver it since it's doesn't currently run" came out and I said sold.

That was 3 months ago and now I'm hooked on the damn trucks.

I had been wanting a 67-72 since high school (late 80's). All the cool guys I liked to hang with had older trucks and I was stuck with an 86 Ferd Taurus:barf: . Well 5 years ago I finally got my Old 71 and its been a sometimes rocky but overall sweet ride. My wife dosen't really get it but she knows it makes me happy!:lol:

My dad's 1969 c20 Custom Camper, 396, all options (maybe not tach or tilt), black on black, that the gas shortage in 1975-1977 made him trade for a...........

The classic lines drew me to my '70. The 73+ trucks look trashy & flimsy. I wanted a good, simple truck, No electronics, & easy to work on.

The $800. price tag helped. :)

My dad had a 1971 C10 that I just loved when I was little. Plus I think these are the best looking trucks ever, bar none.

I was given for free a running 71 c/10 from the son of the original owner,I wanted a original 67-72 4x4 so I drove half was across the country to buy it,and now I am so addicted I collect them and preserve them so they dont meet the crusher,sorta gettin in a 67-72 GM truck salvage buisness too

I grew up with them. My parents had the orange and white since 73. And as far back as I can remeber I have loved it. Even at a young age I would say "my truck" . I still have that truck, in pieces getting rebuilt. I also got the green and white to replace it during the overhaul. Other reasons are they look good, reliable, cheap to fix and at this rate every part will eventually be avaliable new. Who could ask for more.

Was looking for a used 4x4 in spring of 1977, and found my '72 K20 on a Chevy dealer's lot. Recent trade, they hadn't yet detailed it, and I liked the looks better than newer trucks. Bought it the day I found it. :)

The year was 1983, newly married and a first time homeowner and needed a truck to haul everthing a homeowner needs to haul. 1969 GMC short bed step side asking price was $700, what a bargain. 6 cyl 3spd on the column and the shifter linkage would hang between gears. You gotta love a worn out column shifter. Going down the road shifting to second gear and the shifter hangs. Pull over to the side of the road, climb under the old truck and free the linkage. Well after a few months of climbing under the old truck working on the linkage enough was enough. Swap in a 350 2bbl and add a Hurst Indy 3 speed floor shifter and set of used headers. I then added a set of 8'' Rallies. The truck had 4:10 posi and leaf springs. What a ride! Dump the clutch at 4000rpms and hang on! Smoke the tires for 20 to 30 ft. and bang second. Well almost bang second. Anyone have an Indy shifter? AKA(mystery shifter) because you never knew what gear it was going to go in . If it went in to second gear smoke the tires another 10 to 15 ft. Man the good old days. By the way my brothers best freind had a 1980 Z28. You probably already know what I going to say. The Z never had a chance against the old beater. I think he got used to looking at the tailgate when we would race. Here it is 24 years later and I currently own 4 Blazers and 2 lwb trucks. I'm sure there are more in my future. i was just looking for a set of wheels didnt really care what just as long as it was smog exempt and after some looking i decided to get a truck because ive always loved trucks over cars and i started looking at just trucks and i found a couple and looked at a couple and ended up buying the one i have now and have become ADDICTED to them

when I 16 my first truck was a 72 cst c10 with factory air and tach. It was sweet. My dad loved the body style for years. picked it up for about 700 and it had a propane injection kit on it. We sold the propane kit for 600. I drove the kit for almost a year then my dad sold it because I couldn't afford gas. :whine:

Next we started building a 53 ford f100. We didn't get very far. too much work for us. Plus we really liked the ease and accecability of the c10.

we sold our 53 and bought the 70 c10 I have now. we fixed it up quickly and cheaply the first time and now this go round we will do i the way I want. In fact I was planning on making it a short bed and my dad told me no the cut up the truck he would find and buy a short bed and trade me.

my dad had 2 c65 1972 grain trucks and a 1970c20 and i have been driving that style evercince , still have the cab from the c20 its project chosn1

HUGE engine selection, really decent looks.

I had a 61 SWB stepside as a teenager and liked everything but that ugly hood. My neighbor had a 65 SWB Fleetside and that looked even better. His dad bought a 67 LWB Fleetside as a shop truck and that was even nicer, sleeker. After 72 though, looks and performance both ran downhill fast (IMO), so our 6 years span of trucks is tops both in looks and performance, IMO.

I owe my life to em!
Got my first drivers lic. in my Jimmy early 1972,(Mom actually owned it then:)) and in June of that year it got us out of a flash flood that destroyed everything we owned. That flood killed 238 people, and if the Jimmy woulda drownded out it would have been 241 with Mom, my Sister and Me. These trucks are just part of the family.

Besides that they are just the best lookin trucks ever made!

The first vehicle I had permission to drive was my dad's 72swb 4x4. I guess I have just always had a soft spot for em. Before I bought either of my trucks I was actually looking for a 64-66 and couldn't find one that I liked. One day I happened upon my K10 in the truck trader and drove about 5 hrs to check er out and bring it home. This question is kinda like "why do you drink beer", I don't have a good answer, I just like em.

Classic styling; simple yet elegant; fairly cheap to acquire and restore; easy access to restoration parts; versatile as far as setting them up in many ways and they look awesome (i.e. lowered, 4x4); remembrance from my youth (uncle owned one); many colors look good on this vehicle; Honestly, the real reason? They just look DA*N good!!. New trucks, take away all the plastic, what's left? When I was a kid, I got a plastic put-together model of a 67-72..I tubbed it out with some bigger tires and yankee ingenutiy, and since then, I was hooked on the look of that truck.

It was a cheap, old farm truck in the paper. Perfect for a 15 yr old to drive to work and then I got hooked. I'm keeping an eye on a 72 Blazer 4x4 my friend's dad has had since new and has been sitting for a while.

back in 1969 my parents ordered a brand new CST short fleetside 2wd, light olive with a white top--i was in 5th grade at the time. then in 72 my uncle bought a new cheyenne K20. my dad traded in the 69 in 1972 for a new international scout. i never have forgiven him for that one,lol. i did end up with my uncles cheyenne K20 though.

I liked the 60-62 the best, but those are expensive and a little harder to come by. The 67-72 is my second favorite and I have know quite a few since high school. I was going to build a boring 73+ until this one fell into my lap.

My Dad bought a '72 Jimmy in about 74, he kept it till about '92, and then gave it to me. I put quite a bit of work into it, power steering, h.e.i., put in a back seat, fixed the gas tank, etc-but it was so rusty I sorta gave up on it a few years later and sold it. I've always regretted selling it,but I gained a new appreciattion for these trucks, maybe it was the styling, or the basic rugged easy to work on mechanicals that really appealled to me, anyway they get into your system and I guess I'm hooked. Hell, even my wife notices these trucks now, she'll spot one when we're out and say, "Lew, theres a truck!" I just grin when she does that....

A guy I worked with back in high school had a '69 SWB 4x4 with 8" of lift and 35's and some loud exhaust. It was the coolest pick-up I had ever seen. After getting to know the pick-up a little better I learned that it was "good from far but far from good". Still bad ass though.

I've been hooked since.

my friend had like 2 swb fleetside's one was 70 and 72, i thought they were so clean , every time i seen them i was like wow, then one day i went to my grandma's house to visit, i went to the back of her ranch to look at the old car's they have, and then boom there it was my uncle's 1969 c10 fleetside shortbed.... i ask him if he would sell it, he said "nope" you can have it....so yeah i got lucky on this one ....

Thanks for the kind words Texanidiot25. I guess when its all you have left its hard to let go. Lot of years since and I still aint let go. I slept that terrifying night behind the back seat after Mom got us to higher ground, and the hatch leaked then! The bottom pic is how she looks now, gonna try to have er on the road again by June 9th, 35 years since that flood and let Ma drive it again!

Gawd See Ten, that looks like a textile mill my Grandma worked at in Crawfordville, Ga. back in the 50's. I imagine all them abandon mills look the same, but that does at least look like a textile plant.Fine lookin ride!

Back in 1990 there was a truck in the Lawton,Oklahoma area called "OLD BLUE".I think the guys name was Stacey Carrol? Anyhow,that truck was F'n FAST! AND beautiful.I wish I would have taken pics,but never did. I think it ran in the 6's 1/8th mile. If anyone should know the truck or have pics,please post them. That is what got me hooked on these trucks.
