the truck has a different interior out of a 97 nissan maxima with heated and dual power leather seats. cd player and speakers in the doors. it also has a powerglide transmission with power steering but manual brakes and 4.10 rear gears

A little high for a 68 with a 69-70 clip. I have a set of those same valve covers. They are cool, and old school.

Re: $3500 worth it for this 68 Stepside

If it runs and drives well I'd say yes based on what I have in mine so far and it ain't close to drivable. Mine is just a driver build too. Not a show truck. If the only body problem is those rear fenders you are in pretty good shape. I'd buy '67 rears and then fill the front side markers.

i plan on it being a driver as i'm doing what i can when i can. i'm in the military and in iraq right now so he's going to hold it for me. once i get back the first project i think is going to be dropping a 700r4 into it and swapping the rear gears. then once i get it to washington state swapping out the fuel tank

basketcase 09-01-2007 08:08 PM

Re: $3500 worth it for this 68 Stepside

Sounds like a good plan. The 700R4 is a .70 overdrive in 4th so the 4.10 would drop to about 2.87. That would give you about 2300 rpm at 65 mph with a 27" tire. I think I could live with that. A 3.42 gear would drop it down to about 1900 rpm.

Hope you come home safe and thanks for all you guys are doing over there.

Re: $3500 worth it for this 68 Stepside

thanks so the 4.10 gear would actually be fine...i figure driving it cross country i might stay at 70 but i could live with 2300 that wouldn't be too bad on gas for the truck

I agree, but if it's what you want and the truck runs good, has good engine and trans, go for it.

I'm from the old way of thinking that if a truck is a certain year, leave it that year unless you have no other choice. In this case you can always convert it back to a 68 front end later. It may cost you some bucks but may be more appealing.

Re: $3500 worth it for this 68 Stepside

i don't know about the floor board of the truck but i know the rest i have seen some more pics and those are the only trouble spots that i can see. the undercarriage needs a lil work just from not being replaced ever.

Well, now, that puts a different lite on things... As I mentioned, if it's what you want and has good motor and tranny, go for it. I've always liked the stepsides myself.

Hey thanks for your service. I see you got your location down as Arkansas. Where is the truck at? Maybe someone here in Arkansas could look at it for you and give you a second opinion.

For what it's worth - I paid $3800 for a '67 short fleet with a solid body, but no power steering or brakes. But it's what I wanted - I looked at it, and thought about it for about a month. BTW, '67's and '68's, especially fleetside shortbeds, seem to be a little more desirable. Just my .02.

When you get out to Washington look us up. We are a friendly bunch.
If the pictures show all of the rust then it is worth it. If it makes you feel good then it is worth it even more.

I would say the price seems a little high. If you already have 3500 and aren't buying it today save up a little or hold out for something a little better for the same price.....If you have seen it and like it go for this truck. If you haven't seen it yourself I would wait. Have they put any money in the engine? bored .40 over?

Re: $3500 worth it for this 68 Stepside

I`ve never seen a truck with "those" trouble spots not have "more" trouble spots around the fender mating flange and bed surface. So,you saw pictures of the floor at the kick panel and up underneath at the cab supports?
I`d still buy a truck like that for that kind of money, but I think they are about all overpriced and based on the real nice ones. The real nice ones are high because they either had alot of money dumped into them to restore or they managed to survive 35+ years without rusting where the majority didn`t.But,a real nice one should be babied and not daily driven in most parts of the country. Then, everywhere there`s careless drivers that can put an end to 35 years of good fortune, too.
So enjoy having a cool truck that you can bop around inj and get all the looks that a $35,000 truck will get going down the road.Only, you won`t be chewing you fingernails and have less wrinkles in your forehead, too.
Thanks for your service and best luck to ya.

I hate to do this to the North-eastern guys but...... You're fron AR, keep looking for something from down south. You'll be $$ ahead 9 times out of 10 vs. a truck that spent time up north.

Sight unseen purchases are pretty risky (even if they are from a board member). One guys impression of "that's all the rust there is" can be completely different than anothers. Wait until you can look the truck over yourself. Save up even more cash in the meantime so you have even more (or better) options when you return.

Thanks for your service!

Re: $3500 worth it for this 68 Stepside

yes, I would hold out for something better. I thought the price may be high do to something under the hood. for 3500 you should have no problem finding something in better shape. if your from akansas I'm sure you can find someing better even if you have to go to texas to get it. It seems like you guys have better trucks out that way.

Re: $3500 worth it for this 68 Stepside

thanks for all the advice. alot of ppl on the board that i've seen find these trucks all the time. i really want one swb it doesn't matter to me really stepside or fleetside. it's just a matter of i'm going to be driving it daily. i'm getting out of the navy in 2 years and i don't want to have any payments on anything when i get out. if i can find one that's a good driveable one for about the same price then i'll just wait. i've seen post from quite a few of yall on diff trucks and yall really seem to know what you're talking about. thanks. and thanks for all the thanks for your service. it's just another job like yall do on a daily basis. i wont be back stateside until around christmas time so i have awhile before i get back i'd just like to find one around arkansas so i can just get it while i'm home on leave then drive it out to washington

Re: $3500 worth it for this 68 Stepside

Don't get in too much of a hurry to buy one. Especially if you aren't going to get it until you get back anyways. All good things come to those who wait. I too was in a hurry to get one and my wife told me to wait. Not too long after that I found the 68 Short Wide I have now and got it for $700. Granted it did not have an engine, but the $2800 difference would go a long way.

Just wait. One will come along that you can't pass up.

Wait and watch for others and I agree find one close to you. Check it out, looked at a 71 LWB for $1500 that was a $800 ride wouldn't budge off the 1500. I rather spend more for one that has less work.

Re: $3500 worth it for this 68 Stepside

Might be a dumb question, but why not wait until your back in Washington and look for one there? There are a bunch of board members in that area that probably have a line on some good trucks. You will probably have a much better experience overall. I know how hard it is to wait. But buying a truck all the way across the country, not really knowing how well it will travel that kind of distance, possibly needing roadside repairs. You end up adding all that travel cost and you're looking at more like $4000 plus any repairs. And if anything major breaks, then what? You rent a truck and tow dolly and spend several hundred more. Add taxes and licensing and you're really spending about $4500 with the transportation costs.

I think you could do much better spending a bit more money at your duty station when you'll have the time and local resources to help you out. There is nothing about that truck special you can't find out west. Just think how much closer california and the other dry western states are. Much better potential for finding a solid truck.

I did my time in the navy and know what it's like to be in your position. I'd say let this one go. I'm not saying the truck isn't worth it. I just think it's not the best deal in your situation. Keep looking and researching, checking the ads, etc. Knowledge is power.

Re: $3500 worth it for this 68 Stepside

well i'd like to have a truck to drive back from arkansas when i went home on leave. i don't think i'm going to buy this truck i've been looking since i started thinking about this truck and for a thousand or two more i can find a nice driver. or even if i could get one that i had to put a motor and transmission in but would be a nice driver i would take because i know the motor tranny set-up that i want. it is hard to wait and i haven'thad a vehicle in awhile i wrecked my other car and couldn't drive it then got deployed twice so i haven't had one in awhile. and these year model trucks are def my dream truck esp to have a daily driver as one. of course mods would come as i'm driving it. i found one on the site not sure how much he wants for the body but it has everything but a motor. power steering power brakes a/c everything. it's an a/c cab a 68. it has been dropped a little not sure how much. but the body is straight with no rust. how much would that be worth do yall think?
