Cool truck! Congrats! I love the '80 square headlight grilles. You'll find that parts for these trucks are cheaper and easier to find than the 60-66's.

Re: I'm one of you guys now

thanks guys,
i'm undecided on the square lights.
looks like I would need to change fenders to swap to round lights, correct?
anyone know what else I would have to swap?
who is a good source for quality hoods, cab corners, and rockers for these.
the truck came with an after market passenger's fender, but the metal is so thin on it, dunno if I want to run it or not.
Also, the hood has been buckled and fixed (poorly), if I remember correctly, hinges cause this problem? guess I should probably change hinges also. I am debating on a forward tilt hood, dunno

No just your bezels,But there were not alot of the square ones that year,I wanted square but couldn't find one with the combo that I wanted and GM was shut down when I bought mine

welcome to the dark side :D..... we got cookies....

Re: I'm one of you guys now

You need the bezels and headlight buckets to make the switch. A few people on here have posted their change from 80 to 73-79.

I like them, and they are different, but...

As far as parts, I have a 5 piece repair kit here:
http://store.73-87chevytrucks.com/me...tegory_Code=C1
It comes with a partial floor, if you want a full pick standard, if the whole floorboard is shot, get the extended. You can click the link and see a customers repair...

Cool another one! Welcome, but its not the dark side, its the light! You walked into the light! Not a bad looking truck, even if a sooner has it.. :)

The cookies here are good

Keep the squares. I wish I had them. Unique to two years of this vintage truck. 79 & 80.

I got dibs if you change them!!

80 only. Actually, I seen some 80's with the round lights too. I'd keep the squares....

Yeah mine are round you could get both, mostly silverado had square, mine is scottsdale, but came with 350,auto overdrive, and air thats why I bought it,most of all of them had 305's in them

Re: I'm one of you guys now

Welcome to our side Joe. The hood thing's a combination of anti-decapitation design mandates and neglected hinges. JC Whitney sells a brace kit that I bought but haven't installed yet.

Actually it was "only" Silverado that got the single square light in 80.

Re: I'm one of you guys now

mmmm........ cookies....ahhhhhhh
Thanks for the warm welcome!!!
I think you guys have convinced me to keep the squares

Captkaos, that is a hell of a deal!! Thanks

N2TRUX, your response brings another question to mind, were there Silverados with manual windows and locks?
this one has them and I'm wondering if the doors have been swapped?
is there a way to tell if it were originally a Silverado? it has the lights and badges....
also I have heard mention of your rear suspension, you have pics or a link to a thread with info about it?

I do know of some buick, olds parts on these trucks also, and a freind of mine had a custom with square lights but can't say original,I'd swap you round for square I've had my truck since I was 17 and never plan on it leaving, but like I said GM shut down that year and did not take any orders for them:metal:

joe231 08-21-2008 12:26 AM

Re: I'm one of you guys now

Rodms, so you bought yours new? very cool.
guess I will hang on to the squares, I had no idea they were special.

Re: I'm one of you guys now

Captcaos, i was checking out the VIN decoder on (your web page?) www.73-87chevytrucks.com
and my VIN doesn't jive
CCL44AS108231
here is the breakdown
C(Chevy) C(conventional cab) L(350-4 V8) 4(heavy half) 4(pick up) A(supposed to be numerical year????) S(St. Louis) 108231 (#8230 off the line)
Any one have any idea what the "A" is?

Re: I'm one of you guys now

you have the RPO sticker? does it show silverado with manual stuff.
my RPO sticker is gone bye-bye:waah:

rod86 08-22-2008 09:43 PM

Re: I'm one of you guys now

my silverado has manual windows and locks too, got no evidence of ever having power in the doors an they havnt been swapped.

spoon 08-22-2008 10:09 PM

Re: I'm one of you guys now

I'd have to look for the RPO sticker... where would that be located? Sorry.

Yeah the truck's got everything but power locks and windows. It's got the fancy dashboard/door panel trim, headliner, carpet, power steering, power brakes, A/C, wood bed, color matched dash/panels/carpet/seats and even two fuel tanks! Boy what I'd give for power windows and locks though!

f.monroe 08-22-2008 10:51 PM

Re: I'm one of you guys now

These trucks were built back when you could still order one . That means that ther were a lot of options . Silverados got the full exterior trim package , interior trim package ,etc but things like tilt, A/C , cruise, v-8 , auto, power locks, tach dash , dual tanks, were all options. You could have ordered a truck with power locks but manual windows . I have personally had a 79 Silverado with manual brakes . My 78 Cheyenne , which is one step below a Silverado , was a non air truck because it was sold new in Oregon . I only wish we had the capability of ordering one the way we wanted these days .
Frank

Re: I'm one of you guys now

wow, learn something new everyday on here!

the RPO sticker is supposed to be in the glove-box
I may be able to get a pair of power doors from a '85 truck for free,
I am debating whether or not i want to put the stuff in my '80.
one part of me wants one piece powered windows and power locks,
and another part of me wants to keep the manual stuff if it came on the truck (which i have no way of knowing for sure),
but it isn't like I'm gonna restore it to stock original anyway....
the more I talk and think about it, i want power stuff....
what do you guys think?

TimE 08-22-2008 11:53 PM

Re: I'm one of you guys now

If you've got the dime to drop, go one piece power. That looks clean!!

joe231 08-23-2008 12:00 AM

Re: I'm one of you guys now

hey Tim....you found me:lol:
i don't have the money now for one piece, but think i can get the power doors for free:metal:

N2TRUX 08-23-2008 12:35 AM

Re: I'm one of you guys now

Frank nailed the answer dead on. You could go down a check list and decide what options you did or did not want.

thanks for the info guys

I am one of you guys too, I just don't tell anybody that!
between us my dad and I own 7 suburbans ,2 4wd pickups, 1 crewcab, and a wrecker that was my dads old truck.
The wrecker is one that I would like to replicate original someday(it is a little too rough to fix) It is a metallic green 73 3/4 ton 2wd long box, with a white roof , and a tan interior, and the best part, a factory 454!
It was what I was riding in in 1979 when I got my first street rodder magazine, which got me started down the whole custom car/ truck road...

:chop:I'm stalking your build Joe!

Free sounds like a good price to me.

I had a 76 about a year ago and couldn't find a good deal on power doors. I utimately decided it would be best to sell it so I could stay more focused on my '64 and '65. ;) (Yea, right! Me stay focused on a project!?!?! Phew!)

Anyway, keep us posted on the progress!
