PROJECT: Patina'd
This is really gunna take some time to catch this thread up to where it is now. I thought I'd start off by showing what it looked like the day I bought it for $2,500. It was a hospital grounds truck in Medford, OR. I think it was pulled in each night which might help explain the almost zero rust. It was a 250 6 banger with the 4 speed granny 1st and a 6' shifter. Out back was a 3.73 open rear end.

C'mon man....don't spoon feed us....we need more pics!.....LOL
Really though, thats a sweet look, original truck! Dan |
Re: Thanks for asking.....here is project: Patina'd
If you haven't seem my other threads.....it doesn't look like that now. I'm trying to go back in time and show what it took to get it to where it is now. I get a lot of questions as to how I got the 18.5's under it without a narrowed rear end. Stay tuned to learn how.......

Nice looking truck. I can understand the rarity of finding a rust free truck from Oregon. My stepper came from Sutherlin, rust bucket...LOL
Keep us posted with pics! Don |
Re: Thanks for asking.....here is project: Patina'd
What a really hope that people get out of this is that I can build a motor, but I have had little to no fabrication skills. I am really teaching myself on this one. Learning how to weld as I go and making all kinds of mistakes along the way. The reason why I love metal and hate wood is because you can put metal back on if you take too much off. Wood you cannot. Nothing like using a low buck truck to get good pratice. This way I'll have the necessary skills when I move onto my Fastback which is in a different catagory.
This is what the truck looked like when I first pulled it into the garage. It could have passed for a 4x4 easily. Notice how clean the engine compartment was?? http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o...b/truck004.jpg http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o...b/truck003.jpg http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o...truck002-1.jpg |
Re: Thanks for asking.....here is project: Patina'd
Good start! Can't wait to continue reading the saga

Re: Thanks for asking.....here is project: Patina'd
that looks like a good truck to start with.

Re: Thanks for asking.....here is project: Patina'd
The first thing I started on was the motor. I had an extra 460 bbc that I had pulled out of a truck I parted. I had already gone through the bottom end a couple of years ago (.030 over, forged pistons, new scat crank and fully balanced internally and externally) These are pics of me getting ready to paint the lower end.
http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o...BLock003_1.jpg http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o...BLock002_1.jpg I spent way too much time grinding and sanding the heads to give them an aftermarket look......not realizing that my alt and PS pump would almost completely cover them up!!! :dohh: They still looked sweet though! :metal: http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o...BLock012_1.jpg http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o...BLock011_1.jpg It turned out pretty good for the effort. The pan was intentionally not painted because it's a drive and that wouldn't be seen anyway. Swapped out the stock head bolts for ARP fasteners. http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o...nesidedone.jpg I want to hammer the point home that this is a BUDGET BUILD all the way and most new parts were bought selling old parts. The motor used to be a short pump with the alt on the driver's side. I sold the short pump, alt brackets and pullies for enough to buy everthing new you see on the front of the motor and converting the alt to the pass side. http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o...pulleys003.jpg The motor is really nothing special on the top end. It's got a comp cams 280H stick with a Pete Jackson gear drive....just to be different. Performer RPM intake bolted to "702" chevy iron closed chambered oval port heads. Full Magnum roller rockers and she's fed with a Holley 750 double pumper with 4 corner idle. Mallory HEI spark. Here is the first test fire before any fine tuning was done. [IMG][/IMG] |
Re: Thanks for asking.....here is project: Patina'd
Motor looks very nice.

Re: Thanks for asking.....here is project: Patina'd
What's nice about the granny 1st 4 speeds is that they are really short. If you go with any other GM trans (muncie, TH350 or TH400) your driveline will be too long. Mine came with a beefy one piece with a little slip yoke in the front. I was able to cut down the driveline and have a TH400 yoke setup welded to the end for my muncie M-22. As you can see when next to a Camaro driveline......she's pretty bullet proof.

Re: Thanks for asking.....here is project: Patina'd
Out with the old and in with an original and rebuilt '69 Corvette M-22 4 speed with Hurst linage. I really think this is the 4 speed to run when you have a lot of weight and a lot of power. Kinda spendy though. I had to run the long shifter arm to clear my bench seat. I have buckets and a console.....just having got around to fabbing them up yet.

Here is project: Patina'd
I knew it was going to have to come down a long ways to even remotely look lowered. Since I knew I wasn't going to go with 5 lug disc in the front for awhile, I needed to find a good way to get it down. Since they don't make aftermarket drop spindles for drum brakes, I went with a JDM tubular lower control arm with a 3" lowered spring pocket. They say to use a max of a 2" lowering spring and they mean it. I started with a 3" and it was too much.....no alignment left. I will say that these give a great ride for the amount they dropped the truck.
Once again....I did nothing to the underside of the truck because this is a total driver and I wanted to stay consistantly dirty through out!!! LOL I had to remove the bump stop and really cut down the turn limiter because they were hitting the upper spring pocket. The turn limiter was really over-built in my opinion. The truck does not bottom out at all thanks to stout KYB shocks. http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o...larms002_1.jpg http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o...rms001_1-1.jpg |

Re: Thanks for asking.....here is project: Patina'd
Ah yes.....I didn't fall off the face of the Earth. Time to work on this build thread a little. This is kinda hard to do because I'm not doing this as I go. the truck has been done with phase one for about 2 years now and I'm starting another phase. The question I am ALWAYS getting asked is "how did you get those tires under that thing?" This all started when I was laying under it, looking at the relation of the end of the fender well to the side of the frame. What I noticed was how the spring and shock were really under the truck and the only thing in the way of huge tires was the fender wells themselves. The first thing I did was realize that I was going to go low enough that I would need to C notch the frame. The first thing I needed to do was get the bed off and I didn't want to wait for my friends to get off from work to help. I decided to get creative with tie down straps and my engine hoist!!!
Please note that most of the pics you will see in this next section acutally has the 15.5's on it.....the 18.5's came later and are on the truck now. http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o.../qwer002-1.jpg http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o...ub/ebay003.jpg |
Re: Thanks for asking.....here is project: Patina'd
The one thing I want to repeat again and again is that I don't have "mad fab skills". Some of the crap I see on this website blows my fricken mind. We have some real Rat Fink/Chip Foose kinda guy on here!!
I didn't feel comfortable fabbing my own C notch so I decided to go with a bolt-in kit. I chose the McNaughton kit and was really please with the strength and quality. Granted....it's not nearly as clean as a custom one but I thought it would be good if my frame didn't break in half going down the road. The kit fit great and went in pretty easy because I did the old "measure twice and cut once". I acutally measured about 10 times and cut once. http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o...uckin001_1.jpg http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o...uckin004_1.jpg http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o...uckin009_1.jpg http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o...uckin011_1.jpg You can tell by this last pic that it didn't take me long to realize that there was enough room that I should have gone with the 18.5's. What you see here are 15x12 wheels with 15.5 M/T Sportsmans. The 18.5's came later!! http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o...uckin013_1.jpg |
Re: Thanks for asking.....here is project: Patina'd
This is kinda funny. These are the things I used to do before I got ahold of my drinking problem.
"Honey...are you done?" "Yeah...I'm just going to pull the truck in (and do a burnout in the garage)" Doing a burnout with no bed on is not easy. Lots of wheel hop. Notice I have to back out of it before I can give it more gas!! [IMG][/IMG] |
Re: Thanks for asking.....here is project: Patina'd
Nice!! this truck is bad a$$.You are doing a great job!:chevy:

Re: Thanks for asking.....here is project: Patina'd
I'll tell you what Northern....you have a keen eye for excellence!!! Thanks!!!!!!!!
This truck is fun and a great project to practice on. At some point I'm going to look for a cab to start doing final work on. I wanted to get this to a point where I could drive it and have fun. I don't like to work on something for years and not get to enjoy it on the road. This way, I'll be able to completely do all the body work and paint and then simply do a fender/bed and body swap. I will pull the motor and trans so I can do the frame too but at least I won't have huge down time. It amazes me the heads this thing turns in its current "patina" state......and I'm also talking before the motor hung out of the hood. |
Re: Thanks for asking.....here is project: Patina'd
And you call me a SHOW OFF....
.... |

And now onto the bed. All I needed to do was take off exactly one more row on the bed floor. I'm not sure exactly what they are called but I needed to end up on the low part of the bed so I took off one more ridge and stopped on the low part so the fender well would sit flat. Nothing special here. Just a good ole cut-off wheel and goggles. This picture is of the 15.5's not mounted up. I just set them in there to give me an idea of how far I would need to go.
P.S. You'll notice the bed floor has been fully restored!!! lol |
Re: Thanks for asking.....here is project: Patina'd

The tricky part of this whole thing was getting that last high row in the bed to be tapered so it looked like the other ones. I wanted it to look at factory as possible......so guesstimating I went! The last pic is before the welds were really cleaned up. I must say that they turned out way better than I thought they would. Once the fenders were put back on they looked like it came that way! :metal:
