i've been surfing on here for a while, and i must say this site is great, so i thought i would show my new project, a 52 shortbox from arizona. this truck is very solid, still has what i think is the original wood floor in the box, i plan on a flat colour, maybe the original blue with blue steelies, i'm going to leave some dents for the old look. i have a camaro clip to put in with a very stout 406sbc with a 5spd and a 9" with a locker for the rear. when i need some advice i can hopefully call on the collective

Welcome Scott, This is a great site cause there are several builds going on and you can get great ideas from all of them. I am building a 52 with my dad and we went the Mustang 2 setup in the front and 9" in the rear. Feel free to ask questions. I asked lots and am still asking them...lol.

I installed new rear springs that centered the axle in the rear wheel well and lowered it about 4 inches. I forget who made it I think maybe TCI. then mounted my 9 inch right up

Welcome to the board. Your truck looks very solid. I didn't think you had any solid trucks up your way
It's always good to have another 47-59 guy on the board.

Looks kind of like an Old Navy clothing store truck... Nice ride.

Great start ! Sounds like a good plan.

Thinking about a flat color myself, I actually liked the dirty faded orange before I washed it, not so much now.

keep us informed as you go!

Re: new guy with a 52

the truck was sprayed in a gark gray epoxy primer when i bought it, under flouresent lights it looks blue, i saw tci's rear spring and shackle kit, so when it comes time to do the rear i will centre the wheels in the fenders

Looks like a great start... So let me guess the stout 406 is out of one of the dirt track cars in the background??

Re: new guy with a 52

well there's some parts from 1 of the dirt motors in the 406, i'd like to use a quickchange rear to be differant but i think i'll stick to the 9"

Just remember there are NO rules for a custom build !!

Scott52 09-30-2009 08:04 AM

Re: new guy with a 52

i can buy a steel axle tube quick change for not bad money, i have to check to see what a locker style 1 is worth, running a set of wide 5 aluminum rims on the back would sure be differant

OH, and by the way "WELCOME" from the dry hot desert of Southern Arizona.

When I left KItchener in '49 they were still delivering milk and bread by horse and buggy, and look now they have race cars up there!! How thing have progressed.

Build that truck to drive and work for you its a custom!
Antbody can bolt stock pieces back on, it takes a real man to cut one up!!

well i made some progress, i took off the front sheetmetal, removed the pedal assembly and e-brake pedal and pivot, took off the steering box and battery tray and removed the column. i was glad that everything unbolted with ease, but i did take the plasma cutter to a few bolts, just to try it out

Re: new guy with a 52

thanks, here's a question, is there a bracket on the passanger side of the firewall for the inner fender to bolt to like the 1 on the drivers side or does it bolt to the lower part of the firewall

solidaxel 10-06-2009 12:22 AM

Re: new guy with a 52

The ones I have tore apart only have the three bolts in the toe board on the passenger side, how many did you find?

Scott52 10-06-2009 07:01 AM

Re: new guy with a 52

yes 3 bolts in the toeboard, i was just checking because the inner fender wasn't bolted and i wasnt sure if there was a bracket or not

here's how the front rims and tire's worked out, the tires are 195/75/r15, i have lots of clearance betwwen the tire and fender when the wheels are turned
i ordered a set of rear leaf springs from Landrum, chrysler style with a 5" arch and a spring rating of 150lbs and the front spring perchs and the pads to mount the 9", so thats next on the agenda

well i had some more time to work on the truck. i've started to hang the 9", i used Landrum chrysler style asphalt late model springs with a 5.5 arch rated at 150lbs. i moved the front spring perchs to the outside of the frame to get the truck lower, have to gusset the perchs yet. i'm just waiting for my afco aluminum shackles to come to in to get the rear shackle mount made and figure the shackle angle and length i want to use

chev3600 04-11-2010 03:11 PM

Re: new guy with a 52

I cant wait for the rear shackle mount! good work.
plenty of pics, please... I might have to borrow your ideas!

What clip are you using? The install looks great. I sure do wish that I would have kept my original frame when I see such work as your's. Keep the updates and pix comin' :metal:

the clip is from a 79 camaro, its a leftover from the old asphalt challanger days, had to use a camaro clip then everything back was a tube chassis

i got a chance to do some more work on the truck
well i wound up moving the springs to the inside of the frame, we set the box on and the tire worked out nice in the fender

here's a shot of the box on
we put the hood on to check how the sheet metal is gonna fit, the hood springs are holding the back of the hood up so i will have to figure out something, we have the hinges dropped down as far as they will go, i will be looking for a better hood, someone has done some welding down the centre and the hood is spread where it meets the cowl
