Re: chopped x member!
thats awesome!
|
Re: chopped x member!
it was an easy swap, the steering issues are the only real prob, i may swap to a rack setup anyway.
|
Re: chopped x member!
Man that thing looks sick! Do you have any pics of what you did to it? and did you cut the floor out in the back for the C?
|
Re: chopped x member!
Yea I will post some tomorrow of what I did, I did not cut into the interior at all,it is all under stock floor

*****in!!!!!

Re: chopped x member!
did you swap the crossmember and just raise the engine up with a hoist? Kick azz burb, i'll be tearing into mine soon.:metal:
|
Re: chopped x member!
You do not have to remove the engine at all, if you look at the frame mounts for the engine, there are two bolts on the top of the frame leave those hooked up and you can remove the x member, you just remove the bolts from the bottom of the bracket that bolts to the x member and when you slide the member back in the holes should line back up.... I had to drill my back 2 out just a little.

Re: chopped x member!
Ummmm wait!!! you rock!!!:metal: I finally see how these DM's are cut....hmmmmmm...I can do that and I have a spare X memeber...nice work any hints

Re: chopped x member!

|
Re: chopped x member!
Nice work bro! I need to make that short drive over and say hey! Still working on getting my parts together. How did the steering go back together?
|
Re: chopped x member!

Re: chopped x member!
Nice!! my thoughts exactly....I would even consider a small c notch in the a arm..yea I know let the flaming begin!!
|
Re: chopped x member!
^yea I thought about that, but had the other stuff laying around so just used it...LOL
stevieb I didnt cut the rear floor at all but, I am going to have to to get it any lower. I will take some pics tonight of my rear setup. |
Re: chopped x member!
Cool thanks, I'm just racking my brain about what to do, so far what I have going on is gonna be...
adjustable behind the axle bag mounts with top cross bar mounts. 4 link with the top bars attached to the frame not a cross member and the bottom bars mounted in the exsisting front perches. the front... after seeing what you have I think I will go that route...LOL thank for the inspiration! |
Re: chopped x member!
thanks for the pictures.i've got one of Nates Dropmembers and im gonna attempt it with the motor in. gonna do the same thing by leaving the original motor mounts in untill ive got the old crossmember ready to come out then hook up the engine hoist to raise the motor enough to get the DM and then the new motor mounts in. only thing is i'll be doing it on jackstands. Your burb has realy given me the inspiaration to get into my burb again and get it on the road:bann:
|
Re: chopped x member!
here are the bolts i am talking about for the motor mounts, the top ones you leave in the frame and the bottom ones unbolt from your cross member.

Re: chopped x member!

http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/c...m34dr/rear.jpg http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/c...34dr/rear2.jpg http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/c...34dr/rear3.jpg http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/c...34dr/rear4.jpg |
Re: chopped x member!
That is cool, I was thinking about doing something like that on mine. As you know with the gas tank it's hard to place the bags. nice job..
|
Re: chopped x member!
thanks, yea the gas tank is a bit%^! if I keep it i will pull the leafs and do the 2 or 4 link.
|
Re: chopped x member!
Man just got the tranny back in... took a poo on me, I am glad I didnt trade it off and it go out on him a couple of weeks after he had it, I would have felt like crap. It never slipped or anything and I left a red light the other day and heard a pop and then nothing...turned out to be the torque converter but at that point we were already in the tranny so just went ahead and rebuilt it...oh well one less thing to worry about!
|
Re: chopped x member!

Sorry about that, but its good to just rebuilt it. Good luck with it.. Trav |
Re: chopped x member!
How much did you cut out of the Xmember??
|
Re: chopped x member!
1 5/8 and that is as much as you can go without moving your steering stuff up or switching to a rack setup. my lower control arms are just about touching the nuckles where the tie rods bolt in.
|
Re: chopped x member!
Oh alright so if i where to do this to my truck with coils wouldn't i have to compensate for the cut to the xmember, by cutting the coils the same??
|
Re: chopped x member!
No..its a totally different type of drop
|
Re: chopped x member!
yea, but the mounting location of the lower control arm is changing because they bolt to the xmember, so that would bring the lower control arm closer to the spring cup on the top, so wouldnt leaving the same height spring be a little hard to force in there. Correct me if im wrong.
|
Re: chopped x member!
when you do this or other X memeber mods it drops both the upper and lowerarms the same which is why they work so well...if you get into to much X member mods with drop then you run into issues with steering rod hitting the frame which can be cured with a small Cnotch but to much drop and the steering wheel shaft will hit the upper control arm
Hope that clears it up |
