Here is my 1990 Suburban
6" lift 33" tires... it runs great! The kids love it. No rust anywhere.
It might be me, but this thing drifts all over the road.. like driving on ice.. it wants to float around corners or over bumps. Any advice? http://onfinite.com/libraries/1565755/a97.jpg http://onfinite.com/libraries/1565756/69d.jpg http://onfinite.com/libraries/1565757/5ce.jpg |
Re: Here is my 1990 Suburban
Good looking suburban. A a GMC and power mirrors too, awesome!!! How is the interior?
Maybe a bad steering stabilizer? does it have a raised steering arm? |
Re: Here is my 1990 Suburban
Reminds me of my 89 GMC Suburban. Loved it and regret ever selling it.
I'd think a new stabilizer or nice dual stabilizer would help the "float". Great looking truck! |
Re: Here is my 1990 Suburban
Nice ride!!:metal: And get us pics of the inside..

Re: Here is my 1990 Suburban
Nice bro, the steering could be a few diff things, start by looking at the steering stuff while the wifey turns it back and forth and see if there is anything you can see with the naked eye. I replaced my steering box on mine and it made a big diff, but yours my not need that.

Re: Here is my 1990 Suburban
The int is a dark blue and is in really good shape for its age. I'll try to snap some pics.
The bummer about this is I bought it from Oregon and Im having a problem titling it here in MO.. The guy who sold it to me only had if for a month and never got it titled in his name, and neither did the guy he bought it from! I have the title and its just signed over to the guy he bought it from.. so I"m not sure what to do. I will double check the steering box mount points. Other than that it really runs great.. it looks brand new underneath. |

Re: Here is my 1990 Suburban
Tony that's an awesome truck. You've got a pair of sweet drivers.
On the Suburban, make sure it's got a dropped pitman arm on it. That's a requirement when you lift one 6". The steering stabilizers dampen bump steer and won't help with drift. Do check where the steering box bolts to the frame as mentioned. They are notorious for cracking the frame there and the steering box working loose. Sweet score. |
Re: Here is my 1990 Suburban
Some of it may be the tall sidewalls, too. It gives the truck a whole different feel if you haven't had a lifted 4x4 before. Check all of the above ideas first, though. Sharp truck, congrats!

nice truck man......!
love lifted Subs |
Re: Here is my 1990 Suburban
What's going to happen if you can't get it titled?

Things I like about it... the gas pedal moves very freely, unlike my truck. It idles nice and smooth and accelerates well. It has factory single exhaust with a flowmaster muffler... sounds great, not too loud, no drone or popping. The int is really clean except for some stains on the carpet but those can be shampoo'd out. I like the barn doors with the lift but I think I might trade the 6" lift for a 4" lift. Hopefully I can still run the 33" tires. I like that is has air bag helpers in back so it does not look like a saggy rear end. I was going to sell my truck, but if I can afford it I'm going to try and keep it for when my boy turns 16 in 13 years..lol. |
Re: Here is my 1990 Suburban
4" will be fine with the 33's.

Re: Here is my 1990 Suburban
Rancho used to sell a 2 1/2" lift for 73-87's. I installed the kit on a 76 Blazer I had once and had 33x12.50 BFG's on 15x10's, 4" backspacing. I ran that set up hard for many years with no problems.
EDIT: I couldn't help but scroll to the top and look at it again - I couldn't imagine changing that rig. For the size of the rig, the lift and tire combo makes a perfect stance... |

Re: Here is my 1990 Suburban
I think a 4" might workout better though.. I'm just trying to get a little more street manners out of it because there are some windy hilly roads in these parts, and its mainly a street vehicle anyway.
|
Re: Here is my 1990 Suburban
The height won't make a difference as long as it's set up properly. Does it have a dropped pitman arm? I'm looking at the first picture and it looks like maybe there's some wear around the outer edge of the driver's side front tire, but pics 2 and 3 look normal. Are the front tires worn evenly? It may need ball joints and rod ends and the works up front.
|
Re: Here is my 1990 Suburban
I'm not sure how to tell if it has the dropped pitman arm? It has 160xxx miles.. I bet it does need the works up front. Tires are all worn evenly though.
|
Re: Here is my 1990 Suburban
It looks great like it is. If you are going to make changes, you might consider a tire that isn't so flat and wide. No matter what you do to the front suspension, that style of tire is going to want to "track" with the road.
|
Re: Here is my 1990 Suburban
I cant imagine going smaller on the tires with a 6" lift though??
|
Re: Here is my 1990 Suburban
Good lookin burb
|
Re: Here is my 1990 Suburban
i would love to have that lift hint hint
|
Re: Here is my 1990 Suburban
Caster can make that same issue...however it is highly unlikely that is your issue.
First thing i'd do is give the front end a once over to see where your at parts wise...then decide what lift tire combo you want vs. gear ratio... Years ago my 79 K5 had a 4 inch lift...and 33" tires. I ended up going to 4.10 gears to get it back in the power band. I always thought that combo was the best...and you can wheel hard and stuff the tires and never effect the turning ratio and or crinkle fenders...once you hit 6"s and 35's you are going to rub. DW |
Re: Here is my 1990 Suburban
I think I like the 6" lift now, with the 33's. So I'm going to stick with it for awhile.
I just replaced a leaky trans gasket and changed the oil/filter. Everything looks great underneath and no more leaks...... until, I saw a drip of antifreeze. I'm going to put in a new radiator as this one look original, and I'll tighten up any leaks along the way. After that I'll get back to the drivabilty issues.. It needs tires bad. |
Re: Here is my 1990 Suburban
Just an update. Since the warm weather, I was able to replace the radiator with those new plastic tank/alum ones. (they are light). I also replaced the t-stat with a fel-pro oring gasket (nice too), the upper and lower hose and heater hose. All were very corroded inside. She now runs a consistent 180º with no more anitfreeze leaks. The trans pan doesnt leak anymore either.
I double checked the psi in the tires and found 45 in the drivers side and low 20s in the pass side. This explains why it handled horrible I think. I put 36 in them all and it rides nice and straight. I drove it around plenty today and she really rides nice. Next up is a stereo and some more cleaning. Then eventually tires. Im open for suggestion on tires if anyone has any. |
Re: Here is my 1990 Suburban
It's hard to go wrong with BFG All Terrain TA's for looks and decent street manners. I've always had good luck with them, and like the way they look, too. I'd run a 35/12.50 with your lift.

Im with these guys about the BFG A/T, Thats all I run on my 4x4's. I've got over 45k on my current set.

Forgot to say, they will wear a long time. Those tires don't wear out quick like the cheap copies. |
Re: Here is my 1990 Suburban
I was looking at them, but yes the price is up there. Sounds like I'll get what I pay for with them though. You guys think I should go 35x12.50's??? Or should I stick with 33's?
I'll have to measure to see if it still fits in the garage sitting another 2" higher. And I'd like the tires to have nice street manners... judging by the tread design that does not look like the case, but I did run a set of these years ago, and I do remember them riding very nice and quiet. I like the feedback on the mileage. The other tire I was looking at was the Yokahoma Geolanders. They run around $150 and have a 40k milage rating. Any feedback on those? |

They are expensive. If you don't have the cash, get out the CC like I did. It's worth it. The look is insane and they are quality tires that will last long enough to get your money back out of them. That truck is a keeper, if you can swing it put the 35" BFG AT's on it. |

Re: Here is my 1990 Suburban
I can not disagree at all on the BFG's. I had 2 sets on a Samurai a few years back. Very good on road. Great in snow, great in mud, awesome on rocks! Just all around PERFECT tires. I would never run another type of A/T tire if I can help it.
