Project: ALTER-K-TION ('57 GMC Quad Cab)

ALTER-K-TION
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c3...%20GMC/GMC.jpg

I think I have collected enough parts to begin this project so here it goes. This project will be based as:

'57 GMC 1.5 Ton Front Clip
Quad Cab
Longbed
Dually
4x4
Cummins Diesel

This will be a slow project as I usually have about three going at once. I picked up an '05 Dodge Ram 3500, dually, diesel, auto, 4x4, quad cab, so this is where it starts. I will be using the firewall, floor board, cab back, 35 gal. fuel tank, and complete rolling frame from this truck. I am starting on the cab grafting and will update as I can.

Pics (nothing exciting, just got rid of the Dodge bed and chopped the roof off the cab):

I can't do a shortbed and have dually! Unless I ran the fender flare dually fenders but those are just ugly in my opinion.

Still on the hunt for a 97-98.5 12 valve Cummins, hard to come by though.

Been drilling spotwelds all night trying to seperate the Dodge panels. Holy cr@p that's hard! All the panels are intertwined and they spotweld about every 1.5".

You using one of them fancy spotweld drillers or a regular drill?

I've got every spot weld drill bit there is, and the one that I think works the best is from Matco Tools.

Re: Project: ALTER-K-TION ('57 GMC Qad Cab)

After drilling 6.5 MILLION spotwelds this is how far I've gotten. After weaving panels out from one another I got the back driver's side cleaned up. Remember I will be using the Dodge cab back and floor. After removing the sheet metal mounting plate for the rear seat I made a huge discovery.... Some jackass at the junkyard stuck the forks of the loader through the floor. Anyone got patch panels for an '05 Dodge Ram Quad Cab?

I have a question. You may have answered it already, but i havent been able to locate it. I'm sure you have a good reason lol

Why are you using the dodge floor? There isnt any way its the right width. I think it would have been easier to get some flat steel, roll beads into it for strength (floorboard), and fuse two cabs together. JMO though. :)

Re: Project: ALTER-K-TION ('57 GMC Qad Cab)

My guess would be easier to keep the Dodge floor/hump/firewall and cab mounts than to re-build/form the old Chevy floor/hump/firewall and mounts..... ?

Cool project. Major damage to the dodge before hand. I would question if the frame is still sraight.

I believe it is easier for me to graft the cab to the Dodge. Believe it or not the floor is the correct width, just modifying it where the GMC steps are. Which I am also changing the step design on the GMC. There were a lot of reasons for using the Dodge floor, firewall, and cab back.

No Rust
Body mount locations are correct.
Trans tunnel is correct for the Cummins
Firewall is correct for the Cummins
I can bolt in the Dodge interior (front & rear seats, carpet, etc.)
Newer floor = Better structure
And I love the challenge

I'm actually amazed at how well it's all fitting together. I cut here, cut there, measure here, measure there. And holy snaps Dodge = GMC

The frame is straight (I had it checked) minus the front frame horns that go from front crossmember to the core support. Not that big of an issue, I could have it straightened or most likely I'll chop them off and rebuild the tip of the frame to accommodate the GMC core support.

Re: Project: ALTER-K-TION ('57 GMC Qad Cab)

This truck actually looks worse than it is. Most of the damage was caused by the junk yard with the forklift. The truck went through 1 fence and 2 brick walls, well almost, got stuck in the second brick wall.

Re: Project: ALTER-K-TION ('57 GMC Qad Cab)

Got the passenger side of the Dodge cab cut up today and started on the lower back section of the '57 GMC. It's getting there, little by little. The cabs are just stuffed together in the picture, I have to trim the Dodge back and alter the cab back bracing on the two cabs. The GMC cab will still drop down about another 6".

I've got that picture too. The only thing I didn't like is how he used front doors for the rear. I want this baby to look like it is supposed to be a quad cab from the factory. My rear doors will be made up of about 200 pieces (no exaggeration).

Re: Project: ALTER-K-TION ('57 GMC Qad Cab)

This is it for tonight. Got it fitting a little better. I have to do a side job Mon-Wed night so I'll pick this back up on Thurs. Little more trimming and tweaking and I should be ready to weld it. Then I'll be ready to mock up the bed, modify it, then it's on to the front half of the cab.

Does anyone know of any 03-06 Dodge quad cabs in the junk yard? I could really use some patch panels if they're out there. Also need the top half of a big window back cab (as you can see), my upper was WAY rotted out, not salvageable.

Played a little bit tonight, windy as hell here. Got the bed test fitted on the chassis and am trying to determine where I want the bed to meet the cab.

It'll be a little different then drawn up there. It'll be more like the pencil drawing in the first post. Along the top section of the rear door there will be a 4.25" filler panel.

ahh that sounds like itll work. cause if it was going to be like in the photoshop pic you'd have to make it a "hardtop", like the tri-five chevy cars (for example) with out the post.

Hope it works out for ya, i'll ship you the peices i can like the fuel door filler if mines good. might be able to snag you a patch panel or two for the floor if the one in my parts truck is good

Awesome, that would be great. I have had no luck looking around on the internet and junk yards here.
