My Crewcab Shortbed

Ok time to do this again. I had the crewcab up for sale and during that process my wife and I decided to keep it and put it together as a family hauler. I'll post some pics of how I got it and I'll post some pics of what it looks like now.

I traded a mustang for this truck and I had very little in the mustang so I thought I got a pretty good deal. The truck came to me as a roller with the frame already shortened. It also came with a pretty decent shortbed and power doors off of a suburban.

Plans for the crewcab are to install the motor and trans that came out of my dads truck and install the tbi setup that I bought from bigblock73. I'm also going to be installing the power mirrors that I got from someone here, can't remember exactly who, for an awesome deal. I'm going to be panting the truck dark red/burgandy/maroon with a tan stripe down the center for a two tone paint job. Also y'all have to bear with me. I'm going to try to do this as quickly and inexpensively as possible. I'll be doing all the work including the paint. I'm trading a factory 86 frontends for 72supercheyenne's 91 burb frontend next weekend. I'm also going to be installing A/C on this truck.

I'll post some pics of the truck when I got it. These are at the previous owners house.

Re: My Crewcab Shortbed

This past week I brought the truck up into the backyard under the trees so I cold start tearing it apart. In the next pictures you'll see I got the bed off thanks to the trackhoe and I unbolted the frontend and man handled it off the front of the truck in one piece by myself. I made sure the tanks plugged in like they're supposed to. I did all of this end of last week.

Re: My Crewcab Shortbed

I went to the pull a part today with 87 chevy silverad and got some stuff for the crewcab for the AC. I also got some stuff for my diesel and some stuff to sell on here

when I gt home from the junkyard I decided that I'd pull of the airbox on the firewall. That turned into taking the airbox out of the cab. That turned into taking the dash pad, gauge bezel and cluster, and radio out. That turned into taking all four doors off so I cold drill holes in the jambs for the power door harnesses to go through into the cab. I was talking to my wife and figured that now, while everything is stripped, is the perfect time to clean scuff and paint the firewall, dash, inside of the doors, and the jambs

So tomorrow me and my neighbor are going to go pick out sme paint. In the morning I'll take some pics of how the crewcab sits now and post them up.

Yep staying 8 lug and stock height for now. I'm gonna keep it functional as a HD truck. It has a 14 bolt full floater in the rear so it's fine for towing. I may raise it up a little in the future but it's not going any lower than it is now. Also current plans once it's painted and I've redone the interior is to maybe put some H2 wheels with LBZ center caps on them

I actually have a whole 5 lug 1/2 ton front and rear suspension and had seriously thought about converting it and lowering it. I decided to leave this one more than capable of anything I throw at it because I'm going to be doing a frame off resto on my blue and white shortbed and lowering it on big wheels and all that. I may put it on bags also. Haven't really made up my mind about it yet.

88-91 HD rotors (6 lug) and then do the 6x5.5 Full floater conversion on the rear :uhmk:

They are bolt in hubs that change the bolt pattern from 8x6.5 to 6x5.5

Just wondering why I would want to do this. I'm open to suggestions. Just don't understand the reason behind it. It's already 8 lug and I already have wheels and tires to fit the 8 lugs. I'm not trying to be a smart a$$. Just wondering why

A full week off? You should not have any issues at all then having it on the road by Sunday. ;) Anxious to see how you go on some stuff. Watch out for the snowball effect. Might as well go ahead and yank that cab off now.

Trying my damndest not to take the cab off  I think if I slid the cab off my wife would flip lol. Anyways it's not a frame off anyways. I just need to put it together while I have some extra time. I really hope I can get it running by Sunday. I still need to get a taillight harness. So don't know how long that's gonna take. Gotta have that to drive it down the road

What color(s) are you thinking of? I look at that and it screams "paint me yellow and white". Tough but sensitive. Then again, can't go wrong with red.

Stitch 07-06-2010 09:58 AM

Re: My Crewcab Shortbed

I'm gonna two tone it like my blue and white truck in my profile. Where the blue is at will be dark red and where the white is will be a light tan color. The interior will also be tan and dark brown two tone when all is said and done

Thought i read in an earlier post that you had the halfton suspension and all and were thinking about it, although you planned to use this truck for towrig duties, and i figured this is just a way to keep the 14bff and use a halfton lug pattern.

Stitch 07-06-2010 12:23 PM

Re: My Crewcab Shortbed

Oh I appreciate that man. Thanks for the info. That definitely would have worked but I'm gonna keep it a 8 lug

Re: My Crewcab Shortbed

So I stripped the inside of the cab. I'm gonna be painting the dash maybe the top of the back wall. I'm also gonna be putting down some sound deafener in the cab floor so I figured I'd get it all cleaned up. To say this crewcab was a work truck is an understatement. It was SOOO dirty inside. It looked kinda dirty but I had no idea until I stripped the cab. These first couple of pics are right after I stripped it and cleaned it out AND I had already vacuumed it out. Nasty

The really dark spots are surface rust and caked up dirt. I took some Lysol and a brush and then some clean wet rag to rinse it off and here's the results. I'm gonna have to wire brush the drivers floor board. I didn't clean it all that well because I'm gonna have to do some work there anyways. Enjoy the pics of my CLEAN cab

Yeah I'm glad I kept it too. My wife isn't too sure with the state that it's in right now but once I start painting some stuff and putting it back together she will feel better about it. She really can't complain as the truck came from trading the mustang and the mustang came from some of my other wheelin and dealin lol. Anyways I got all the hardware stripped off of the firewall. Now I just gotta get the gunk cleaned off of it and then it'll be time to scuff and paint some stuff :)

Thanks pball. I went and just picked up some paint for the dash, firewall, upper back wall, jambs, and the inner doors. The color is GM Precision Red. It came on the 05 corvettes. Didn't know that when the color was picked. Asked my wife to pick a red and that's the one she picked. When I got home I Googled the paint code to show y'all the color and that's when I found out it came on the corvette lol

Re: My Crewcab Shortbed

Thanks for the compliments and encouragement guys. It helps to motivate me. I got the firewall gunk cleaned and holy crap what a PITA that was. When I restore the blue and white truck I'm gonna pay someone to do that. 3 wire wheels and a half gallon of kerosene later it looks decent I guess. Still gotta scuff it up. We'll see how it looks after I give it a good scuffing lol. Anyways I also got the floor boards ready for some paint. Once I get some paint on them I can install the power harness for the doors in the cab. I also have to drill the holes in the jambs for the harnesses in the doors. Once I get that done I can scuff and paint the jambs. I'm also going to scuff and paint the upper rear cab wall and around insid of the back window frame and windshield frame. I don't want to have to go back and paint anything in the cab. The lower back cab wall will be covered in carpet and will have bigblock73's cab corner brackets in the corners.

Tomorrow my wife and I are taking the kids to the zoo for half the day in the morning. So hopefully when we get back I can start on scuffing and painting what I already have stripped or I can get the back window and windshield out and get the doors stripped. Here's some pics of my PITA firewall. Like I said I still need to scuff and paint so it's still got some work that needs to be done to it.

Another pic from the other side

btw just so y'all know, the bracket where the master cylinder is going to get painted flat black. I am NOT going to even try to get that gunk off of there. So it's going to panted black as well as the M/C and the booster and the steering shaft. The frame may also get a little freshen up while I'm in there where some minute surface rust. There goes that snowball. Quick some catch it, stop it, lay down in front of it...someone do something

That's awesome man. I'm sure that the extended cab will look killer when you're done with it. And whenever you want to come check out my stuff just give me a call and I'll give you my address so you can find me. I hope to have it on the road in a couple of weeks and everything done but paint on a month or two. I have to have it all painted up and totally finished by thanksgiving. That's when we have to go to the annual family reunion and my wife doesn't want the truck to be 12 different colors lol

You know Chuck, now would be a great time to go ahead and pull that cab off, sandblast and powder coat the chassis, rebuild the suspension, etc! ;) Well, at least thats how my snowball started. It's more like an avalanche now!! Firewall looks great. Cant wait to see it red. And you know you want to get that gunk off the booster bracket. I used aerosol gasket remover on my 72 Cheyenne Super and gave it a light scrub with a brush. The rest just fell off with a pressure washer after letting it soak a secnd time.

Lol shut up lol. I hear voices in my head telling me to tear into it more. It's already almost all the way there. Laura said if I take the cab off I have to buy here a used car now to replace the clown car. Not gonna happen lol. I gotta stay on track with this one. I really don't NEED to take the cab off even though I want to so bad lol

hopefully after the zoo this morning I can get the cab scuffed and painted. I can't wait to see some paint on this thing. Laura is bugging me to get out of bed right now lol so we can go to the zoo. I guess the sooner we go to the zoo the sooner I can get back and get dirty again

It would be so easy right now to lift the cab up for a day or so... You know it would. Get the cab off to the side, brush some new black paint on the frame, put some new bushings all over the place. Sure would make it ride better.

Stitch 07-07-2010 08:57 AM

Re: My Crewcab Shortbed

If I had the money for new bushings AND a place where I could lift the cab up without Laura seeing it I would but I don't lol. Nice try fellas. I wiash I could it this go around but it ain't gonna happen y'all have seen my frame and under my cab. It's nice so I'm not worried about it. The back half of the frame will get some paint becuase the beds already off though
