Why do they all say "rare" 3 door

Been looking at Burbs and noticed that almost every single one for sale, it says rare 3 door. Or hard to find 3 door...lol

Re: Why do they all say "rare" 3 door

they made more 3 doors than 4 doors, so they actually arent rare at all. lol.

Re: Why do they all say "rare" 3 door

I generally take it as meaning 67-72 burbs (which all happen to have 3 doors if you don't count the rears) are somewhat rare. This does not necessarily mean they think a "3 door version" of the 67-72 burb is rare.

...though I'm sure some might.

Re: Why do they all say "rare" 3 door

1935-1966 2 door: 31 years
1967-1972 3 door: 5 years
1973-2010 4 door: 37 years

you could say the 3 door trucks made over a short span of 5 years makes them kinda rare. combine that with the fact that most have rusted away or been parted out years ago. but really, it is just a selling gag to get the attention of those not in the know.....

Re: Why do they all say "rare" 3 door

didnt they make 4 door 67-72 burbs as well? and arent they more rare than the 3 doors?

capev86 07-08-2010 08:33 PM

Re: Why do they all say "rare" 3 door

i am guessing you are pulling my leg....but i'll just say that the only 67-72 burb 4 doors are conversions and were not built by the factory....so yes the 4 door is rare. i like having 3 doors, but 4 doors was a smart design move for the 1973 model year as the competition (international travel-all) had 4 doors in the 60's.

Re: Why do they all say "rare" 3 door

67-72 is 6 years not 5......lol, but I got you.... I just always thought it was funny they say rare, when they were ALL 3 doors... 67-72 that is

capev86 07-09-2010 12:33 AM

Re: Why do they all say "rare" 3 door

it should be written as "rare, 3 door" with a coma.......

Re: Why do they all say "rare" 3 door

I've never seen a "factory" 67-72 4 door Burb and don't believe that they were ever built. Someone like Longhorn man would know for sure. I think people say "rare" only because it has 3 doors which was UNUSUAL but not rare as that is how they all were built for these years.

Mostly ignorance, in my opinion.

Re: Why do they all say "rare" 3 door

thats funny, they do all say rare. i never really thought about it...but i guess its rare compared to the post 72 year suburbans. you will always get someone asking, "wheres the 4th door? did you weld it shut?" i havent even left my yard yet in my truck and i already get that.

Re: Why do they all say "rare" 3 door

Weird things I've noticed about 3 doors:

Nobody I talk to about my truck ever seems to notice that it only has 3 doors, even if we are standing right next to it. Obviously you can't see all the doors at once, and the brain seems to just put the door there, like an optical illusion. That's my theory anyway. People are conditioned to there being 4 doors. The other day my oldest son went for the back door on the driver's side, going as far as sticking his hand out while he was distracted by something else. He smiled and shook his head and I just laughed.

When you tell somebody it only has 3 doors, they don't believe you. If you are on the passenger side, they will go around to the other side just to check, every time. If you are on the drivers side, they will not have noticed the missing door most of the time. They will look surprised and usually touch the side of the truck just to make sure. Then they ask if it is rare, and I say of course. How many 3 door Suburbans have you seen?

Re: Why do they all say "rare" 3 door

The people that ask me, are usually to young to realize that there was such a truck. Or, for the most popular around here. People just don't know that the Suburban is the oldest running marque, and are surprised to learn that they go back as far as the 30's. Lot's of changes happen in 70 some years...

Rare? Well, IMO they are getting to be. Not so much as a lot of other makes and models out there, but none the less they are getting more and more scarce as time goes by. I wouldn't say that the model is worth more because of this 3 door thing, but it is kind of a novelty that catches peoples eye and makes them think twice.

I have a laugh for you..... A friend here in Australia went to a show in his 70 Suburban and won best engineered car! Guess why? they thought he had welded up the "4th" door to make it a 3 door!!!!:metal:

Beautiful! I would love to know what the judges thought his rationale was for welding up the door. Or what he told them it was.....

That's funny :lol::waah::lol:

My understanding is that GM thought they were keeping American passengers safe by forcing them to get out on the curb side ...while attempting to thin out the British population.

Last time I was in Australia. They have right hand drive vehicles and they drive on the left hand side of the road! So that would put the passengers DEAD IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD!

Re: Why do they all say "rare" 3 door

Yes thats right!
I wish we were on the opposite side of the road, like you guys, then we could import new cars without the cost of converting them.
At least we dont have to convert 30years or older cars!

Re: Why do they all say "rare" 3 door

that's not so true.Did you ever hear the story why they did not make the 4 door suburban.in 1965-66 Internal travail-all. I know you heard of the name well Let just say that the reason why GM decided that it would only have a 3 door and not a 4 door modal was a small accident Back in Ohio or one of them back states. It was on a rainy Wednesday and a 1964 Internal travail all had a 5 year old kid.Its a sad story it was a YELLOW AND WHITE THE KID OPEN THE DOOR A TRACTOR SEMI PEALED HIM LIKE A ONION and PAINTED THE SIDE OF THAT TRUCK RED.SALES IN ANY WAGON OR SUBURBAN OR CARRY ALL DROPPED.IT SCARED GM in 1966 there where fewer buys for modals that had a door on the drivers side.

GM had 25 of the 1967 chevy and GMC carryalls finished They felt kids where not responsible enough to get out on oncoming traffic.Look to day people are so stupid to standing out in traffic with there doors open or letting a kid run out in front of traffic to get in on the drivers side.

Almost every other day i drive my 1965 3/4 ton and i have to dodge people with there open door's in traffic lanes

I talked to a CHP and a few cop's ask them about the door being open in on coming traffic Most of them told me to try to avoid it4 of them said take it off. They told me the Law is very straight in this area.

even tho you are a pedestrian But a car truck Van door is open in on coming traffic the person that owns the car with the door open is at fault 100%.

The Law even goes even further saying if bodily harm is caused by this act the person with the car that is strucked holds all liability for persons being harmed or Killed.

that being said the person that hits and kills that kid or who ever can sue for damages.in both property and metal damage

Re: Why do they all say "rare" 3 door

Around here they are rare. Bought my '68 4 years ago because I always liked the style from camping trips in Michigan years ago.

In at least 10 years that I would have noticed one I have seen only one 3 door Suburban around here. The only other one I saw in Indiana was one for sale up in northern Indiana. At the least unique, but I too do not understand the ads and chuckle a little each time I read one.

Re: Why do they all say "rare" 3 door

Before I knew three door burbs existed, I had only seen two door models ( from the left side) and four door models (from the right side)
The only way you'd know that three-door models exist is to look at both sides of the same vehicle, which requires you to care enough to extend the effort.

I never heard the Travelall story. So are you saying GM had 25 1967 4 door Suburbans finished but scrapped them after finding out about an accident that happened in 1965/66? If it was true then why didn't GM change all their station wagon bodys to 3 doors also for "public safety" reasons?

Longhorn Man 04-26-2011 10:46 PM

Re: Why do they all say "rare" 3 door

i never believed that story... heard a close variant of it before, thought it was bunk back then too.
