First Time On The Board

1 Attachment(s)
This is my first post. This is a 1972 Blazer that I purchased for my wife about a year ago in the Dalles, Or. It had been sitting for quite a few years. The previous owner had hit a deer with it and then parked it. I have repaired the front end damage to the grille. This Blazer came with a double wall black top that was in pretty rough shape. I was lucky enough to stumble upon the single wall top that is on it now last fall for $100. I am in the process of doing body work now. I will post some pictures of what it looked like when I bought it and where it is now.

Re: First Time On The Board

I sold it right after I bought the single wall top. I know how hard they are to find. I've already had offers on the top on my parts Blazer.

Nice! The sliding windows you have in your top are pretty rare.

Re: First Time On The Board

I have also heard they are rare. I'm going to change the top to black and put solid windows in. I haven't decided if I will sell the sliders or not. I may just end up putting them in the top on my parts blazer and use the solid windows from it unless I can find some other solid windows.

Nice looking blazer. You let me know if you want to sell those sliders. I have an orange blazer that needs some. LOL!

Re: First Time On The Board

I've been trying to add more pictures to get you all caught up with the status of the blazer today but it wont let me. Having some problems! Yet it is letting me add pictures to a new thread about the Portland swap meet. I have sent a message to try and find out why. Hopefully I get it figured out before this Blazer is a different color!

Nice Blazer. Never have seen the sliders before. Are they unique to first generation Blazers ?

Re: First Time On The Board

I have been told they are pretty rare a couple of times. Although I do not know the history on them. I am leaning towards taking them out in favor of solid windows.

I was told they were an after market/dealer installed item.

Re: First Time On The Board

I wonder if they swap with later year Blazer top windows. Seems like a similar shape to the later Blazer windows.

Re: First Time On The Board

Thanks for the info on the slider windows. I think the 73 and later blazer top side windows are a little more square than ours are.

Ok, I think I finally have this picture resizing thing figured out. Here are some pictures of the Blazer once we got it home and started to see a little more of what we had to work with. The body was not as bad as we thought it was. Obviously the front needed a lot of work.

Here are some more exterior pictures. I may overload on pictures now that I have it figured out! I just want to get everybody caught up to where we are today.

I have tried to move this over to the blazer builds section but I can't figure out how. I guess being my first post I can get away with being in the wrong area! If anybody knows how, let me know.

Some interior pictures. The back seat was very nice, just needed to replace the arm rests. The front was another story. Everything but the console needs replaced. We did get lucky with the tilt column though. Anybody ever hear of white front seats and a black rear seat? I am just assuming the front seats were redone in white at some time due to the black console.

Along comes a 1972 parts blazer with a perfect rear hatch I might add! Found this one for $800. I figure the hatch and the metal I need are way over that. Again...sorry for all the pics. We'll be caught up soon.

Cut out part of the floor on the drivers and the passengers side and replaced the inner and outer rockers on both sides. They weren't too bad but I figured this was the time to do it. We also fixed the inner foot wells. We got all our patch panels through LMC.

Found a finger sized rust hole in the right side quarter so we cut the section out and put in a new panel. We made the weld in the area that will be under the woodgrain moldings just to be safe. There was also some damage to the right side tail light.

I personally don't care for speakers in the doors, so I had to have one of the doors filled in. The tailgate was in great shape and the rest of the body just had very minor dents.

We decided to go with the original color which was medium red. We bought all the original woodgrain trim at the Portland swap meet so it should look nice once we get it all put back together.

Re: First Time On The Board

Looks great!

Funny your right rear lower long gouge mark is very similar to mine.

Biggest problem I'm having is deciding whether or not to pretty up the body. Most of my paint is original, and since Dad can still name where each and every dent/scratch/scuff/bend/etc is from, I'm having a tought tim deciding whether those memories should be taken away from visibility and have a new looking truck again (that I'd be hesitant to use as a truck), or to just leave it as-is.

Your paint pic progress is amazing, truck looks pretty solid before you started. Killer deal on the parts truck as well.

Erik

Re: First Time On The Board

Thanks Eric! A friend of mine had the same situation as you with a truck he got from his dad that his dad had had for years and years. Original paint and hardly any dents. He eventually ended up painting it and adding some accessories as well. He decided to do it because it was something his dad would never have paid to have done. He wanted his dad to see what it would look like all fixed up. His dad ended up loving it. Ours had original paint as well, but it just had a few to many cosmetic things in the body for us to live with.
