1981 Chevrolet C50 Pick-up Conversion

Greetings,
Some time last year I saw a pick-up that really caught my attention. It was something out of the ordinary and made me want to build the same. The truck was a medium duty GM truck converted to a daily driving pick-up. The hunt was on for the right project truck (solid trucks of this age can be hard to locate here in Ontario) and I finally found it. It is a 1981 Chevrolet C50. I have started the build, and look forward to posting my progress on this website. that will be cool, look'n forward to your progress.
I'd like to do one my self, I would add a crew cab. the fire wall's are differant and would have to be swap'd out but it would be worth it. |

This is a cool one, it doesnt have the rock wells, but it does have the big military tires
I want to build a crew cab version of one of these. They are cool. Doesnt help that I know where a C60 is, rockwells and 52in tires haha |

Starting with the prep and repair of the lower fenders.... I know I should likely cut out and re weld new metal in, but this is a budget build for me, and I have opted to go with some fiberglass plug and finishing putty...

The plan is to get the front clip prepped and in primer, set it aside and then get the box in and prep it.
Then bring the truck in and shorten the drive line and everything associated with it. I want to get the box into the heat before I dismantle it. Am I in for a fight removing these dually fenders? |

Took a quick break to escape the winter... Now back on the job again with my project.
Front clip is now in primer. |

Not sure what direction I am going for paint. I used Mar-Hyde self etching primer on these panels as I had them all shined up and wanted to seal the bare metal.
To be quite honest this is a budget build for me and I will likely end up doing a Rustoleum (Tremclad in Canada) paint job. I have done this in the past on a couple other trucks with success. I like to keep costs down as this is just kind of a hobby for me, and I like to be able to say I did the majority of the work. I am posting a photo of last years build. Medium blue Tremclad, wet sanded and buffed. I thought it turned out respectable. When I told people around my town it was Tremclad they where surprised. |

Nice! I like that shade of blue. I'm thinking about how I want to paint my K10. I want to keep it cheap but decent looking also.

It is very easy to work with and it really did only cost me under a few hundred dollars. I am taking my current build down to metal, as I did with the blue truck. This adds a few dollars with primer, paint stripper and sand paper. I just like to know what I working with.
But realistically I used less than a gallon of paint on this truck ($40.00), bought a gallon of paint thinner ($10.00) and got my foam rollers at the dollar store (3 for $1.00). So the initial painting of the truck is not that expensive. It does take a lot of time to go through the various steps, but it is the winter and I hate the cold.... ha. BTW the color was medium blue. Plan on painting the C50 bright yellow. |

I did, high density 4" foam roller from the dollar store. It took about a month to do, but as previously mentioned I have nothing else to do in the winter and I don't like the cold.... Ha!

Just primed under my hood and sprayed some high solid primer on the fenders.
Plan on painting under the hood same color as truck. Here is a pic of my right hand man and fellow truck enthusiast, my boy Carson. |

Just found a 5 speed transmission out of a split rear end medium duty truck not to far from my house. The truck currently has a farmer 4 speed.
50 mph = 3100 rpm. Also made a trade for a regular bench seat for my Bostrom and buddy seat combo. Good riddance. As far as I know the transmission swap should be a non issue. Any thoughts... |

This is going to be bad azz! Im curious, what is different about the firewall and floor of the c50 and c60 trucks? Does it have the same cab mounting points as a c10,20,30? Ive always wondered if I could use a c50,60 cab on a c10 frame for the small back window.

Thanks for the compliment, I am looking forward to it being done.
The cabs are quite different, and in my opinion you would be up for some major modification to mount on a traditional frame. The floor in the cab is flat from front to back. The firewall is also recessed. Above photos show it. |

I was a long time finding a suitable project truck. I was originally going to buy a medium duty with a Detroit Diesel, but after countless less than favorable reviews of that engine and my limited experience with diesel engines I decided to go with gas.
The next thing was finding a truck that was not completely rotted. That was a bit of a challenge. I do not mind a bit of body work, but cab corners and rockers are not my forte. My next thing was finding a truck with budd style wheels and not Dayton style wheels. After about a year of searching this truck appeared. And so the story goes... |

Moving forward...
Slow day, so I came home early and power washed a bunch of mud and dirt off my dually box. The underside of the box is a little punky for my liking. A question... Can I modify a fleet side box to make it a dually box side. Has anyone done this before. Any suggestions. After that I got eager and cut the dump box off. See photos... The truck frame is pretty clean considering its a 30 year old Ontario truck. |
