'71 K/20 Build Thread
Welcome :metal:
Here's my first build thread, I'll try to update it as much as I can. Here's a little background on me and the truck. I'm Andy, and I've had the truck since I was 8. Got it from some friends of ours in South Dakota. We go out there every year for vacation. They own a 13,000 acre cattle ranch, so all the trucks get dented and whatnot  Well the camshaft went out, and they parked it. One year, we were out there, and we said next year we'd bring a trailer out. At this point they wanted $1000 for it. So the next year comes around (2007), and we were explaining how it was for me and all that. They asked how much I had saved up ($450), and they sold the truck for that. Granted, it need the engine rebuilt, but we only had a couple hundred bucks in it. They also got a new transmission exhaust put in right before the cam went out. So we parked it in the barn for a few months until we pulled the engine. Remember when the cam went out? They already had the new one in it  So we put put new bearings and new valvetrain in, and we put some Lingenfelter heads on that we had laying around. We also put a high volume oil pump in, and an Edelbrock Performer intake. Other than that, the engine is completely stock. We haven't done bodywork yet, we're saving that for last. I'm planning on painting it the original Hugger Orange/white. Out of the $2000 we have in the truck, $1700 of it is out of my pocket. I'm a professional dishwasher  Alright, I've probably bored you enough now, here are some pics of it from a couple months ago. http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/...o/100_1633.jpg http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/...o/100_1634.jpg http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/...o/100_1635.jpg http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/...o/100_1636.jpg http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/...o/100_1637.jpg http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/...o/100_1638.jpg http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/...o/100_1639.jpg http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/...o/100_1640.jpg http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/...o/100_1641.jpg http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/...o/100_1642.jpg http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/...o/100_1643.jpg http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/...o/100_1644.jpg Thanks for looking! Re: '71 K/20 Build Thread
Nice truck! Those dents give it character. What's the options? Look forward to your progress.

Can't wait to build a 4x4 someday, but for now I'll do my 2WD haha, awesome truck man
|
Re: '71 K/20 Build Thread
Thank you :)
Shawn, too many to explain! My signature has the engine details, and it has a Turbo 350 tranny. The truck is mostly stock, and I don't plan on customizing it too much at all. |

Thank you :D
So today I took some pictures, the ones in the starting post are a couple months old. http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/...o/100_1734.jpg http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/...o/100_1736.jpg http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/...o/100_1737.jpg http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/...o/100_1738.jpg http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/...o/100_1739.jpg |
Re: '71 K/20 Build Thread
Looks like a Real solid truck to start with. I like the painted bumpers and lack of lower trim...tuff looking truck!!

Re: '71 K/20 Build Thread
Man that is a killer truck for the money! It is a really solid unit from the looks of it. Congrats!
|
Re: '71 K/20 Build Thread
Thanks, I appreciate it. :)
|
Re: '71 K/20 Build Thread
Today I pulled the steering wheel off and realigned it..it was 90 degrees off
Right now the clutch delete plate is drying, just pulled it off and repainted it. |
Re: '71 K/20 Build Thread
You got a sweet deal on that truck! It is in very good shape to start. What shape are the floors, especially along the rocker panels?
|
Re: '71 K/20 Build Thread
Thanks!
Everything's great, just the usual rust at the bottom of the kick panel. The rocker panels have no rust though. By the way, I checked out your build thread, very awesome truck :metal: 4 inch lift? |
Re: '71 K/20 Build Thread
Thank you also. That's great news on only a little rust. Thought mine was in decent shape rust wise until I took it apart. Ended up being a lot more work to replace all the rusted areas than I thought. Was worth it to me in the long run.
It is a Tuff Country lift kit and is suppose to only be a 2.5" lift but it is definitely closer to 3". Mainly wanted to lift the front up so it would sit more level. |
Re: '71 K/20 Build Thread
Painted the fenderwells and master cylinder..
http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/...o/100_1744.jpg Needs cleaned up a little but it still looks better :D Also started painting the underneath of the floor pans...gotta do the middle yet (Pain in the butt)... http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/...o/100_1745.jpg |
Re: '71 K/20 Build Thread
Very nice. I would love to have a K20 farm/daily truck.

Re: '71 K/20 Build Thread
"I'm a professional dishwasher" Go to school
Sits real nice! Looking good - it's a DELUXE model? Sandalwood floor mat, dash and steering column. DELUXE door panels. You've even got the original DISK BRAKES sticker on the tailgate! :metal: :c2: Welcome to the site |
Re: '71 K/20 Build Thread
Thank you :)
Lite, I DO go to school! I'm 14 and I work on the weekends  The Sandalwood color is getting changed to black. I stole an NOS black dash pad off a guy for $50! Door panels, column, and floor mat will be black. Seat will probably be one of those that has the fold-down console. |
Re: '71 K/20 Build Thread
:chevy: Your truck, if it were mine I'd keep it as is (minus the seats, I'd replace with original bench). Nice score on the NOS dash pad. :metal:
|
Re: '71 K/20 Build Thread
Id just put in a stock bench and drive it. Its a badass truck!!!

Re: '71 K/20 Build Thread
Thanks for the comments! I would like to do a stock bench, but I really want a center console. At first I was sold on Blazer seats. Then my dad said that if I had a chick riding with me, I wouldn't want her on the other side of the truck, which is a valid point....
So if I got the fold down console, you can go from buckets to bench almost instantly. But the thing is, I do like the original seats better. Buddy buckets aren't really an option, they'd cost too much to get done...I still have the original bench, but it needs new bottom foam and a cover. Also forgot to say that from the same guy I got my dash pad from, he had a complete NOS tach cluster (all working gauges, good bezel) for $150! He had a new bezel for $50 (I realize I paid a little too much for that now), so I bought that, and then I got this with a little work: http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/...psaddb42eb.jpg So that will be going in soon. Right now the truck sits on jackstands getting new brakes, ball joints, steering components, etc. Glad I hoarded my money, it sure does disappear quickly  The guy at the brake place said, "Wanna know how to make a small fortune restoring an old truck? Start with a big fortune." Which is true  |
Re: '71 K/20 Build Thread
"Glad I hoarded my money, it sure does disappear quickly"
Get used to it!! Lol. Sweet deal on the parts. It's gonna Look great. Sounds like ya got your prioritys right though, making sure that it's safe and sound to drive, and the little honey is right beside ya enjoying it. :) Posted via Mobile Device |
Re: '71 K/20 Build Thread
Yeah, I know. It'll be worse once I'm driving and I have to pay for gas... :(
Thanks! I figure that with my luck, something will break when I don't have the money to fix it, so I'm doing everything now so I don't have to worry about it later. |
Re: '71 K/20 Build Thread
Well here's how it sits now:
http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/...ps4544813c.jpg It looks kind of sad that's it's not being driven...I'm sad too.. And I got some new tailgate trim...I'll get the bottom piece on eventually http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/...psffe4a198.jpg |
Re: '71 K/20 Build Thread
Nice truck. Wish I could find one that cheap. Good luck with the rebuild.
|
Re: '71 K/20 Build Thread
Thank you! ;)
Painted brake and gas pedals http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/...ps946b51b3.jpg I greased up the gas pedal since I had to take it off anyhow. Time to paint the parking brake pedal now. |
Re: '71 K/20 Build Thread
Looks great, you will be stylin by the time you drive that baby. Good to hear your dad's words of wisdom on the bench.
It is great to see the younger gen working on these beauties. Because in reality we are not owners of these vehicles, we are caretakers until the move into someone elses loving hands. My 5 year old has already called dibs on my dually, I told him by the time I go he will have to fight his 18 year old older brother for it. But by that time the odds will be even'd out. |

Re: '71 K/20 Build Thread
Thank you :)
Found a couple pics I had Repainted my pedals: http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/...ps4a422a93.jpg Repainted the heater box: http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/...psa3a21a92.jpg Repainted core support, used Krylon Satin Black and some new decals: http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/...ps2598c35a.jpg Pic of after we got the rear brakes pulled apart. At some point, someone put new shoes on, but did a Mickey Mouse job. Spindle nuts were chewed up from a chisel, brakes were completely out of adjustment...so we redid them right. :) It's put back together but I don't have pics yet. http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/...psfe579f07.jpg Here's where I went from my Sandalwood dash pad to black, again paint is Krylon satin black: http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/...psfb607897.jpg http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/...ps017a3ad0.jpg I also have a new goal. In a couple years, when I drive it, I don't want there to be one single thing to not work. Not really a difficult feat, there's not a whole lot broken on the truck, luckily :) That's all for tonight...once we get time to work on the brakes and whatnot (I don't have the knowledge to do it completely myself) I'll have more progress to report. |
Re: '71 K/20 Build Thread
Found a pic of when I repainted my inner fenders! I think I'm going to pull them back out so I can clean. Sure is easier working in the engine bay with them out of there :)
http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/...ps8467be13.jpg Oh, I used Krylon Satin Black (as you might know by now, I'm a fan of that stuff). It looks like at some point some battery acid spilled on the passenger side one, as there is a hole in it... New radiator hold downs (Krylon Satin Black of course) http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/...ps14ae0899.jpg |
Re: '71 K/20 Build Thread
That sure is a nice looking truck. I'm 42 now, and got my C20 back when I was 16 in 1986. Difference is, mine was a rusted out heap then, and I'm just now getting around to getting it into better condition. Keep up the good work. You should definitely have the folks that sold it to you on your Christmas card list. Very solid looking truck, especially for the price.
I like the Krylon or Rustoleum satin black paints, too. Never used the Eastwood chassis black stuff, but the Krylon or Rustoleum looks good enough for me. |
Re: '71 K/20 Build Thread
Thank you! I remember somebody telling me that you can fix dents all day long..but it's almost impossible to completely get rid of it. It bugs me to see a car with bubbling paint due to rust, when otherwise the paint job is nice.
Never really had great luck with Rustoleum, I don't know if it's just the way I paint, but the nozzles always clog and I have to clean them with thinner. |
Re: '71 K/20 Build Thread
Cleaning up nicely :metal: Not a fan of rust-oleum cans with the new drip gaurd thingy. Clogged and spit paint. Other stuff usually good when spraying in 2-3 second bursts.
|
Re: '71 K/20 Build Thread
Thanks :) I know that even the BIG nozzles would spit. Once, I was painting some bolts in the vise. Chevy engine orange. Well, the nozzle decided to suddenly spray in a stream, instead of a mist. It went all over EVERYTHING, including my freshly painted alternator bracket!! I wasn't too happy
Then, of course, there was the time that I got mad and threw a can and it exploded   |
Re: '71 K/20 Build Thread
|
Re: '71 K/20 Build Thread
Ah. I thought the clogged nozzles were just me. I'll have to see if I get better unclogging performance from Krylon. Cool, because the clogged nozzles are a pain.
