I just think I might have seen a frame of one of those. Bad thing is I only have 3 pictures of the rear suspension. I will post later.

Seems like forever since I last posted. So here are some pictures of the frame. It is a 1947 frame with 1987 1/2 ton suspension. The front is bagged and the rear is leaf springs with bags as helpers because this will be a work truck. The motor is a 305 vortec with a 700r4 for the tranny. I can not wait to see it with the body on it to see the way it will set. I will be a neat truck when up and running.

Ken put the cab back on the frame this weekend. So I could not wait for you guys to see what the truck looks like. He said it sets about 11 inches off the ground. Looks low for how big it is. Remember this will be a work truck so laying on the ground was out of the question.

Re: 47 Step van

It has been a while since I posted. I have been working on the box truck plus with the holidays I have been super busy. I have the truck at my house now. Ken ordered a boat load of parts for me after I figured out what I needed. I mounted the body on the chassis. I made a mount that houses the compressor and the air tank. He is going with a toggle or manual air switches. I have it all plumbed up but it looks like a rats nest till I redo the dash. I put on the coated shorty headers and have all mandrel bends to do the exhaust. They are coming out in the center of the back were I will make a custom aluminum roll pan. I bought a AD under the cab brake assembly where it will really be on top of the frame because of where you set. That will take a special mount. Then comes the steering which is going to be fun. The column comes out in front of the steering box so I ended up getting a clear steer box from wizard. It is a really nice piece. Then I can mount the steering column. I should have a lot of pictures in the next coming weeks. The pictures are with it aired out. It is really a neat truck.

I really like the stance in the last few pics. If it is for a mobile dog gromming rig you want it nice and low so the small dogs and easily walk right in. Ha ha

I like it

Re: 47 Step van

youngrodder, That is with it aired out. It does make it easy to in and out of with it low. The rear doors are a little short for me because I hit my head a bunch of times. But Ken"s wife is shorter than me so she will be alright. It is going to be a neat work truck.

99 to Life, It is really different. I could not find to much online about them.

_Ogre, I like the metro. I too think these old box trucks are just plain cool.

99 to Life, They are cool, the outside is going to be part wrap and some bare aluminum with some engine turning.

Do you have any info on how you did the front suspension swap?

xpickup 12-12-2013 10:41 PM

Re: 47 Step van

itstheshu, if you are thinking about putting it on a regular truck it will be a little too wide. The box truck is wider than a regular truck. But here is how I did it. There was about 3/4 on an inch on each side of the frame and crossmember, so I has some plates burnt out and used them as spacers and welded them too the frame. Then bolted through the crossmember, spacers and the frame. I also had to make spacers for the box and the idler arm. The AD frame was about 1 1/2 inches narrower than the 87 c10 frame.

Worked on the exhaust today. I am using all mandrel bends, they came from speedway motors. Here is a little trick on connecting them, I use a piece of angle and use hose clamps to hold it. I tack it at 2 places and then pull it out and tack at another place , then weld it around. I got the exhaust all the way back to the rear end and made the pieces over the rear but have to jack up the rear to check for clearances. The exhaust is are going to come out through a custom aluminum roll pan. Here are some pictures.

Worked on the truck this morning before shoveling the snow. I had a SST battery box from another project. I made a aluminum frame work out of angle. I used SST fasteners to attach them together. I TIG welded the corners. Then cut a hole in the front passenger side wheel well. Then installed it. I still have to bolt it in. I made a aluminum bead rolled cover to place over it. Hopefully the snow will not last long on the driveway so I can finish the exhaust.

that looks factory quality, as always. yeah this snow is cramping my game. We got like 12" not long ago, mostly melted, then just got another 6" atleast. 2x4 s10 is getting a work out.

Re: 47 Step van

youngrodder, thank you, it has been cold as he'll and snowy. Last weekend I was working underneath it while it was snowing. Then Friday I was working on the exhaust and the snow was melting and then I must have rolled in it i do not know how many times. I am over winter already and it has not even started yet!

99 to Life, thank you, it snowed here the past 2 weekends. It stinks working outside but oh well. Funny thing is that I have not even put my 4x4 dually in 4 wheel drive yet. I am still trying to work out the bugs on the lowered one yet. Hopefully over my Christmas vacation I can make some time for it.

Re: 47 Step van

I started working on the aluminum roll pan tonight. It will have a 1 inch recessed area where the exhaust will come out. I had to make it wider so that I could cut out the rot on the one side. Both ends are stepped so that it can be riveted to the body and it will fit up right under the rear doors. Friday I will TIG weld it together and hopefully finish the exhaust if it does not rain or snow.

This is the second time writing this because when I attached the pictures it wiped out what I wrote. Does anyone else have this problem? I usually write in one post and post pictures in another then I do not lose what I wrote!

Re: 47 Step van

We'll I had off from work today so I worked on the step van today. I started off TIG welding in the recess in the roll pan. Then ground and sanded it up. Next was to fit it up. I then finished up the exhaust. I had to do over the axle and out the back. I still have to do the hangers in the rear. The parts store only had 2 when I was there, go figure. I also cut some spacers for the frame where it go higher for over the rear. Then make the mount for the brake booster and the pedal assembly. I used 1/4 inch plate. It is actually going above the frame because of how you set in the truck. I will share a little trick. I used as slitter wheel and only cut about 3/4 of the way and then bent it till I was happy with it. Then I cut a gusset and tacked it in. Then welded the gusset so it would not change and welded where I did not cut through. Sure beat having to deal with a bunch of pieces.
