Lowered 1996 dually
Hi, new to this area, normally in the 47-59 area. I thought I would share my slow, drive while I build project. It is a crew cab 454, 4l80 truck. It was already lowed when I bought it about 4 months ago. It ran good when I bought it , then it got cold and started to eat parts. That is a whole other story. I love to do sheet metal so I built a custom hood for it. I changed out all the lights on it and went back to the factory stuff. It had projector headlights that were like driving with candles. Gone,I will also do some other custom things like put the belt line in the back of the cab and some other stuff. It drives me nuts that chevy did not put it in. I just bought a full set of eagle alloy 056 20 inch wheels for it. I also have a new black grill, filler panel and lower valance. I also have at trimless front bumper that I had the chrome stripped off. I am going to paint the whole thing black with some kind of graphic, something small.

Looks like a nice project.

Can't wait to see more

Re: Lowered 1996 dually
Looks like a short bed. I think you should take a couple if inches out of the top. That would look good. Buy a lot of work, you already have plenty of that.

1badgmc, thank you
79azc10, it will be slow but I will post them. Wickid demon, it is a long bed. No chop though. Yes it is a lot of work but it is my own so it is worth it. It was one of those deals you ask the guy how it is and he said everything works great. It did run good when I bought it then went down hill once it got cold. I have it straightened out mostly now. I have always had something custom to drive except for the last 11 years and got the itch again. Plus my 3 kids fit in it great. Shannon |
Re: Lowered 1996 dually
Get ready to either widen the rear fenders or narrow a rear end for those eagle wheels to fit. I have a set on my red dually and they won't fit you need fenders at least 2-1/2" wider per side. By the way great truck I love duallys.

Re: Lowered 1996 dually
LOW1TON, I figured that. Can you post a picture of your truck? I would love to see it with them on.

Re: Lowered 1996 dually
Nice dually, looks like you're starting with a great truck.
Glad you're not gonna chop it, the only body work I would do is to add the bodyline at the C pillar. Drives me CRAZY that the crew cabs have a discontinuous bodyline, WHY GM? |

83GMCK2500, 1badgmc, Thank you. I know what you are saying about that body line. I drives me nuts too.

Re: Lowered 1996 dually
Good looking truck...
I'm afraid to ask because it'll be something I'll never be able to overlook once I find out but.......... What body line? |

Re: Lowered 1996 dually
It is so stupid that it is not there. It does bug me. Well I got 4 out of the 6 wheels today. Now I have to get the tires for them. I can not wait to get them on. The rear fenders need to be widened 3" from what I have seen.
Shannon |
Re: Lowered 1996 dually
Well I ordered my tires and they should be here tomorrow. Hopefully I can get them mounted if they come at a decent time. I now have all my wheels but I am waiting on the lug nuts now.

Fluffyfreak, thank you. They are out there.
Well I got my front wheels and tires on. I still have to widen the rear fenders so it will be a little while for them. I believe I need to widen them 3 inches for the wheels to tuck. So I need to get some fiberglass resin and mat. I will probably end up doing it at work because of having heat because it will not fit in my garage. I want to do it soon because I want to see what it looks like. I can not wait! Shannon |

Nice looking project!
Here is why you don't want to chop it ;) the proportions just don't work. This isn't my truck, just a local truck that has been around forever. I also agree with the body line issue, drives me nuts about my crew as well. |
Re: Lowered 1996 dually
Fluffyfreak, I have seen a few cummins swaps on dually scene. I thought about the semis but is did not like the adapters and the rotating weight. Sure it is all right, they do look great though.
YBNORML, thank you. I know what you mean, the proportions are just off. Looks like they did a great job , just not for me either. Once spring rolls around my truck will have the missing body line put in. It is amazing how much it bugs me! Shannon |

Here are my latest pictures I took today, right before the 4-8 inches of snow we are getting tonight. So I will not be driving it tomorrow. Next is to widen my rear fenders.

Re: Lowered 1996 dually
Looks killer. I hadn't noticed it before, but I really like the GMT-800 tailgate skin.
|
Re: Lowered 1996 dually
1badgmc, thank you. Yes, it was like that when I bought it. I like it because it is totally different, and like the top edge cover. This truck will be my daily and will get used.
|
Re: Lowered 1996 dually
I will add a disclaimer that, as much as I like the tailgate, if it were mine, I'd have to add 5 clearance lights on it. Preferably in the form of some flushed LEDs. My duallys will always retain the cab, tailgate and fender clearance lights in some fashion.
|
Re: Lowered 1996 dually
1badgmc, I have a extended cab k3500 and it doesn't have the tail gate lights either. That is funny with the disclaimer!
Shannon |
Re: Lowered 1996 dually
That -800 tailgate skin looks GREAT on there!
Interesting note on the tailgate clearance lights: from what I can tell, they were only a '92-'95 thing, from the factory. Then they went to the three over the license plate. |

I was going off the part number for the clearance lamp on the gate itself and you're right, they did start in 1988 with the GMT-400 platform, the 88-91 clearance lamps have a different part number than the 92-95 lamps...weird, didn't see that coming. |
Re: Lowered 1996 dually
If you get a srw axle or cab and chassis axle you won't have to widen your fenders! I don't like the way they look with wider fenders, so that's what I'm doin on mine
|
Re: Lowered 1996 dually
Cab and chassis rear end won't work with those eagle wheels they have too much offset to the inside and are only about 1/2" from the leaf springs, cab and chassis rear end will end up not allowing you to bolt up the wheels before the inside wheel and tire hits the leaf springs.
