Where did you find your LS?

I've been lurking for a while and reading up on swapping in a LS. I'm looking for engine, tranny and harness, I would be willing to buy a wrecked vehicle and go from there. I've been on CL and there's not much listed, where are good places to find a decent setup? Where did you find yours?

My buddy found mine for me out of a wrecked truck.

Found mine on Craigslist. There was a local U-Haul service hub that had pulled a ton of 4.8s out of wrecked trucks figuring they'd be useful as replacements when any of the other motors died. Except they didn't have very many dead 4.8s, so they had a huge stash of replacements they needed to get rid of.

Re: Where did you find your LS?

I found mine on Craigslist as well. However, it wasn't on my local CL. I had to drive about 2.5 hours away. It was such a good deal, it was worth the effort and the drive. I lucked out and was able to buy a complete truck. A tree had fallen on the truck but it still ran and drove. I was able to part-out the remaining good parts off the truck and essentially get my LQ4/4L80E for just a few hundred bucks.

I used to check car-part almost daily. Great sight.

I found mine on a local FB for sale page.

In the time it takes anyone to read PAST this post, they could have already found a motor on car-part. :)

10 minutes a way . Right here at home. Craigslist. Got motor 4l80e transmission, stand alone harness, ECU and motor mounts manifolds and o2 senors. Inline fuel pump and sold a lot of it. $2200.00.

Ebay, I called the company that listed it directly, and the guy cut me a deal if I just paid over the phone, instead of going through the whole online process, and you save a whole lot on shipping if you can have it shipped to a commercial address that can unload with a forklift.

I did it the hard way...parted a wrecked 2000 4wd. I sold all the parts from the old truck...(saved a few pcs for my 02 Silverado), & did not have a nickel ,in a running 5.3! I did not scrimp on parts going in, the heads were pressure checked/surfaced, & a fresh grind on the valves. The springs were replaced (blue springs). If you are short on time, look at the boneyard picks....I would do the same again, hell I dropped 30 lbs, just parting that truck? Longhorn

Re: Where did you find your LS?

I bought my first one ( 4.8/4l60e) from a local yard ( $1450 complete)...turned out to be a bad motor ( rust in cyl), bought the replacement from LKQ with 7K miles on it, since I already had the swap completed, the motor change out was easy and quick.

I didnt need anything but the fuel setup and mounts. hacked my harness myself and tune was mail order.
I did mine in 2009, so not many specific parts being made at the time.5 years she has been going. probably got around 6K miles on top of the 7K she had.

Re: Where did you find your LS?

first one 10 years ago complete fan to tranny at a local yard 5.3. I wired it had a tune dropped in in and ran it never even removed the intake. I did need to clean the injectors. Still running strong now with a turbo.
Second 5.3 my buddy found on the real cheap so I have a spare.
The 6.0 local on craigslist.
They are easy to find.

CL from a truck dismantler in idaho. bought a rebuilt trans from a local shop.

Re: Where did you find your LS?

Found mine on CL too. A tow yard a couple hours away from me had a wrecked Yukon XL that had been sitting there too long and I got the whole thing for $1200. Once I'm done pulling everything for the swap I should be able to make most of that up parting out what's left. There are good deals out there if you aren't in a hurry and don't mind scouring the Internet lol.

Re: Where did you find your LS?

Ebay but called them direct to order. Saved some money. Only issue I had was that the engine was from the north east so it was rusted and the aluminum didn't really look so hot. Spent 2 days sanding and cleaning. My fingers still hurt. Will spend the extra money to get a local one next time.

Being you are Fl. check out this guy. I bought one from him 3 years ago and he is still in business, he will try and sell you the "farm" so be sure of what parts you "need".
Marv Niceville Fl 850 729 5544.

He was not the cheapest but he had a COMPLETE dropeout and I was tired of searching for partial units.

He was on the way to the West coast so he delivered it to my door, I am sure I paid for it!!

Re: Where did you find your LS?

Found mine on CL. I searched "5.3L" and a wrecked 06 trailblazer popped up. It had hit a tree on the front end, and while it totaled the vehicle, the engine still ran and the radiator was not compromised. Got it for $1800. I hope to be able to part out the rest of the trailblazer and get the engine/trans for free.

Re: Where did you find your LS?

I passed on CL engine. A 220k corvette ls still in the car, running and everything. I passed cuz I had to pull it. He wanted 2k. Others on here said I did good passing on it but by the sound of the other responses on here I should have jumped on it. Now I am looking for a 6.0 instead.

I picked up a 2000 sierra 5.3 4l60e 2wd extra cab on CL...$1000.00 for whole truck.
Drove it around the block a few times and did a few burnouts. Truck runs excellent. Body is good...2wd trucks are very rare in these parts...I didn't want the hassle of a transfer case as my truck is a 62 c10...probably sell the leftovers to regain investment...snooze you loose as they sell fast.

Awesome deal

I picked up a 4.8L out of a 2000 Silverado with 143k on it with all front accessories and computer for $600 found on CL as well. It was about the best price I could find. Still need to get the 4l60e.

Re: Where did you find your LS?

6.0L/4L80E complete motor, trans, harness, ECU, etc.

Bought mine from an auto recycle shop just south of the DFW area. I may have paid a little more than some, but I have written documentation of mileage and got to see the motor run before purchasing. I've sold most of the parts that I swapped, so recouping some of my investment.

Sorry I've been away from the boards for a while. Thanks for the suggestion, I had to look up Niceville, up in the panhandle which is about 8 hours away but I'll keep him in mind. May be able to work out delivery.

for searching on craigslist, just figure out what has the engine you want and search for it- 2001 silverado 2006 suburban etc. Set an upper price limit so you don't have to look at all the $20K stuff and you'll be set. I do it on my iPhone so I can search several areas that I've set all within about 5 hours of home.

Re: Where did you find your LS?

I usually put in Silverado, sierra, 1500, 2500 in search field; set 1999 to 2007 as year range, and upper price limit to 1500 (people can be talked down if they've been sitting on a crappy truck for awhile). Get good results, lots of rusty trucks in these parts.

This is more or less the way I went. Bought an 2001 Burb that I found on CL for $1200. Kept everything I needed and then some. Sold the parts of VERY cheap to clean out my garage and brought in $1500. Made $300 and got all the goodies I needed. The Trick to CL is search EVERYTHING you can think of. You will be surprised what you will find.
