65 long bed step side
i figure i should start this build thread soon so here we go.
i picked this up a 65 long bed with 3 on the tree. the previous owner picked it up rewired the truck redid the drum brakes and go it a sold running truck. http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...pswo9scjix.jpg http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...psjpbzcuyn.jpg http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...psjbkztwqk.jpg http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...psyot4s2nm.jpg well after driving it all summer and watching smoke blow from the exhaust and the 3 on the tree not doing enough to have fun driving it i started doing research at what my options are. at first it was a easy decision a chevy 350 with a automatic behind it. but going to car shows and driving the truck some more i realized i dont want another 350 swap. now i am not bashing on a 350 its a easy reliable and cheap swap you can't go wrong with. i decided to stay with the straight six and go with a T-5 swap. with a lot of help from this forum and some great guys i think i got everything together. luckily enough i found a straight six out of a 69 nova with 30,000 miles on it locally for 300 bucks. http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...psguvl1sms.jpg http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...psc9y0vjel.jpg getting ready to paint http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...psatxx0e1s.jpg painted block http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...ps5r3pzhwh.jpg http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...pswrijdpju.jpg in the the process i also found a local guy that will build the exact T-5 i want for a decent price http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...psdyyjpbod.jpg gettin ready to pull the engine http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...psrnib8gov.jpg http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...psro3n20nv.jpg i am a little farther a long then it shows in the pictures. i will be doing an update soon. |

Re: 65 long bed step side
nice truck. straight 6 with a t5 will be great! i hear you with the whole 350 thing. i get that they are cheap easy power but their not unique enough for me.
are you planning to stick with the patina look? |
Re: 65 long bed step side
Welcome to your new truck ;)
I like the blue and its patina. The wheels n chrome caps are very nicely understated. The pics you took of the truck make me want a long stepper too. Engine swap....? Perfect. |

I have wondering for a while, is your truck stock height or is it lowered? Also what size tires are you running? |

Re: 65 long bed step side
here is a bit of progress... just taking my time i am pretty close to being able to fire it up.. i am putting the stock carb and exhaust on for now. i plan on doing a 4 barrel holley once its running. i didn't want to put a new carb and time it all at once. this will be my first time setting timing and such any good write up? tips?

Have you taken it out for a Cruze yet? |
Re: 65 long bed step side
i haven't... i am getting close to firing it up, i have a few things to do on the engine before shes ready for a cruise
|
Re: 65 long bed step side
was able to fire it up today and let it run for a little. i saw the temp gauge pined so i turned it off but i think it was just cause it was so low on coolant. would of messed with it some more but battery is about dead and buddy has battery charger.

Re: 65 long bed step side
Cool! Hope to see some footage!
|
Re: 65 long bed step side
messing with it more today and i think i have a bad temp gauge. the gauge shows its overheated quicker than 2 min of starting the engine. crack the radiator and the coolant is very cold. any replacements or way of testing?
|
Re: 65 long bed step side
Maybe try a new sending unit?

Re: 65 long bed step side
Awesome! So how Was the drive with the new t5?
|
Re: 65 long bed step side
i drove it up the street a couple times and back. LOVE it so far just a little worried about going to far with my temp gauge not working correctly. i just picked up a laser temperature gun and going to flush the system to make sure its not clogged up with anything. i had some steam from under the hood but with no overflow bottle i believe its just from the overflow tube.
|
Re: 65 long bed step side
The "steam" could be smoke from the engine getting hot and burning the paint off. It happens really easily on the exhaust manifold.

Re: 65 long bed step side
got a laser temp gun and everything looks good. took some water out of the radiator due to not having an overflow bottle. took her on 2 10 mile drive and nothing but a smile on my face having this T-5 is so worth it!!! i haven't taken it on the freeway yet but around town it sure is great. i need to get a couple things on order a longer speedo cable. and would like to get a stock tac

Re: 65 long bed step side
today i tackled the headlights. they would start turning on and off after turning on for 1 min. added an upgraded wiring with relays in them problem solved and brighter lights. now to figure out what is going on with my rear turn signals. front will work as usual but the rear both will flash i have already replaced the turn signal switch in the column .. any suggestions?

Re: 65 long bed step side
Curious what you did for the HEI power wire. I'm getting close to that step on my 66 and not sure 100% how to go about it. Did you replace the wiring from the bulkhead connector to the fuse panel too?
Truck looks great! |
Re: 65 long bed step side
i can't help ya with that one. when i bought the truck it already had a HEI in it. i am sure tj's chevy can help ya out.
i do want to give an update i have been doing a couple freeway trips with the T-5 now. man this thing is just a cruiser now i can drive anywhere and not worry about a thing. before with the 3 speed i was worried about some step hills in my area. now its no issue and i am passing cars with ease. anyone looking to do the T-5 it is well worth it in my book. |
