Recreating Dad's 62 C10

Hey Y'all,
Along with my 1981 C10 project I have going on, I have begun to put more attention to the recreation of my Dad's high school truck, a 1962 C10 that him and his dad built. To begin, here are some photos of my dad's 62 back in the day: |

To this "resurrection", I purchased a 1962 C10 Stepside that was my neighbors truck as I grew up. After he passed in a car accident, the truck sat for over 8 years until I was able to pick it up.
This are the photos from the day I went to ask it his mom would sell me the truck: |

After settling on a reasonable price, I took my younger brother to pick the truck up with me. Along with the body, I got the 283 (from a 70s model) and 3 transmissions (1 power glide and 2 turbo 350s). I was happy with the purchase price (but came with a Bill of Sale). I am okay with the Bill of Sale due to knowing where the truck came from. No worries on it being stolen. Knew the lady for years.

Overall, the truck is in good condition. Drip rail has rust, but floors, rockers and cab corners are solid.
I started rebuilding the 283 with my dad: |

After getting the block cleaned up. I decided to tackle rebuilding the heads. First time doing this. It was going well until one of the heads fell off the table and landed on my foot....3 pass out moments and 9 stitches later....To think about the sweet crate engine I could have had with all the money I spent on medical bills. Live and learn.

While trying to still heal, she had to sit with the cousins for a while. My 70 and 81 pictured as well. Also covered the cab to prevent further rust than I already have. Inside pillers are shot. I can stick my fingers to the outside sheet metal:

Decided to ditch the 283 and do an ls swap in the truck. Also don't want to mess with the rust around the drip rail and windshield due to my lack of welding experience.
I picked up this 1962 SWB with a clean title and a 65 frame for $500!! I will use the cab and maybe the frame. It also came with 2 core support 64-66 grill inner fenders and one outter fender. Not bad for the price. Originally a New Mexico Truck. Everything else: for sale! |
Re: Recreating Dad's 62 C10
Planning to strip the inside of the orange cab in the next week or so and take it to the local body guy to start on replacing the rockers and cab corners. Dad and I will patch the floor and do all the other body work. :metal::metal::metal:

Re: Recreating Dad's 62 C10
Wow you are really moving along! Nice decision picking up the solid cab, much easier than trying to repair that rust. Keep us posted, and good luck!

Wow, you're on it. Even the hurt toe doesn't slow you down.
Like the direction things are going. I started on mine back in 2011 with the idea I'd be driving next summer. Good luck. Sub'd |

Well, I spent the week getting the 1970 c10 ready to sell. Already had some hits on it. This was my great grandfathers truck. original AC cab truck. Sad to see it up for sale, but have to pick and choose my projects. It will help fund the 5.3 LS and tranny I found for the 62. I will be keeping the slotted mags for now to put on the 62. The original wheels for the 70 are currently on the 62 from when I picked it up.
Crazy that after sitting for 2 years, all it took was some fresh gas and carb cleaner to get this puppy fired up in under 10 minutes. |

I also was able to snap some better shots of the fleetside bed that came with my parts truck. Will be hard to see that awesome tailgate go. Dig the color so much! Straps are just holding the bed on the frame right now. (don't worry, not too tight)

Re: Recreating Dad's 62 C10
Cool that you are doing this for/with your dad. Bet he is stoked.

Re: Recreating Dad's 62 C10

Subscribed and look forward to watching you build this truck... |

Well, so far this week has been good in regards to getting some parts sold in order to fund the LS. Sold a turbo 350 tranny and this power-glide pictured below. I have a few more parts/tools I am throwing up on the internet today. Hoping the 70 will gain some serious buyers...over the tire kickers.

Well, Saturday was a busy day. Showed the 70 to 4 different guys. Realized there is a spark plug broken so currently running less cylinders. Still runs strong though. Hope to sell soon!
Also was able to sell my orange fleetside bed, 2 front fenders from the first 62 I bought (a purchased some rust free ones a couple weeks back), side cowls and the cowl under the windshield. Guy and his son came down from OK. They are building a bagged 64 for his 13 year old son. Was awesome to see the little man excited about it all. Excited for some more change toward the LS engine!! Here are pics after I got the fenders off. One the PO had welded the bottom...guess he ran out of bolts. |
Re: Recreating Dad's 62 C10
I have a few more parts I hope to move along this week. That should put me in a good place to buy the engine I have been looking at.:chevy:

This weekend was a good weekend. Sold the 1970 c10. I had one guy offer me a low number I wasn't comfortable with. Slept on it and decided to take it. Called him back...no response. Different guy came to look at it that night and offered me exactly what I had on the sign...SOLD!! Thankful to have the cash and see the truck off to a new home.
Also made some other progress. Got my 18 ft car hauler undercoated and my 62 orange cab stripped. Will be building a cab dolly soon. I have an old small trailer I think I am going to build it on so it is easy to move. Pics to come! |
Re: Recreating Dad's 62 C10
Thought I would give y'all the next steps for the plan. Writing it out on here helps me keep motivated to actually do it. I need to strip my 62 cab I will be removing from the frame. Hope it goes as smooth as the orange one this last weekend. From there, I will remove the bed and start the frame repair. Lots of hack welding by the PO. pics soon!
Also, my dad decided he wanted to go back with a 400 sbc with a turbo 400 behind it. Guess I will have to find me a nice 58/59 SWB for the LS Swap. I keep having to remember this is ultimately a truck for him.... Hope I can move some more parts this week as well! SWB frame, seats, fenders, cores, grills etc. Keep wrenching! |
Re: Recreating Dad's 62 C10
Well, I got a call from a guy wanting the frame under my Orange cab. Guy is coming to pick it up this weekend. Any recommendations on building a cab dolly???
I will be using wood. I also have a small lawn more hauler trailer I am hoping to build it on for the ease of moving from the pasture to the garage to work on it. |
