what to thin primer with

first time i ever painted something. am ging to spray my fenders and i was given a gallon of ditzler primer-72 DZL-72 red oxide primer. the can says to thin with DTL thinner. Is this their brand name for lacquer thinner or paint thinner, or do I have to use what they say. If it is their brand name, which do I use lacquer thinner or paint thinner. thank you

Yeah, I would assume its their brand of thinner. I would without a doubt use their brand of thinner, no use trying to mix and match different brands. It probably will work out alright, using another brand of thinner, but why use your vehicle as a test dummy. Just go and buy the DTL thinner. Oh, I think what you would use is the laquer thinner, if I am not mistaken... Hope this helps

gmc- I was told at the paint shop that they could'nt sell red oxide primer any more cause it was a laquer and the EPA outlawed it. Except in spray cans. I just shot my truck with beige primer and used the equivalent of thinner which is reducer. Sorry I can't help but the paint&body board has some experienced painters as well as here.
