New C10 build starting

1 Attachment(s)
Hello, I've been looking for a C10 cab for awhile to drop onto a newer chassis like a Tahoe or 1500 pickup. This crusty cab came up for sale a few weeks ago so I jumped on it. It has rust in the usual places but I can fix that.

Last week this guy followed me home, that's two large pieces of the puzzle.

Lastly here is a mock-up of the two together. I really like the original color of this cab so it all may end up that color at some point years out. I thought I had a picture of the red inside but I guess I'll have to try again. What I'm unsure of is if I want to stretch the cab as a regular cab is kinda small and I'm used to driving SUV's with 5 seatbelts. One step at a time though.

Oh, in the background of this picture you can see my son's 67 IH 4x4 pickup peaking out. What you don't see is his 53 IH panel van or early 70's Datsun 4x4 pickup. I think we might have an old truck problem. :D

You should start this in the build thread area

I have thought lots on 67 72 crew cabs with a Cummins 6.7 liter be a sweet ride

These old trucks lowered with rear truck arm suspension ride very nice

Several good threads how to properly shorten a long box frame

2003 Yukon is almost the right length.

Maybe it should be elsewhere, I'm new so still getting comfortable with the setup here. Maybe a mod can move it.

Exactly, Yukon/Tahoe. I've found a few threads on here doing this. One or two keep the newer floor and firewall which is appealing as I like AC and good heat. :)

Here's a picture of the inside, anyone know what color this is?

Do a search in this area for a 71 color chart.

It will be a slow process but will post when there is something worthy of posting, thanks.

So obviously this is a 71 Chevy front end and I have a GMC tailgate. I actually prefer the GMC front end. Which year GMC grill will fit without adding trim pieces? I also prefer painted and not chromed. Man these things are pricey.

Thanks in advance!

Perusing Facebook marketplace for parts I found someone selling GMC fenders and hood for a good price. They need way less work than mine and will fit a GMC grill. Even have the fender badges but not the hood badge. This is a low angle hood front so I assume 67 or 68. Guess now I can watch for a grill. :)

You can see the paint underneath the dark gray looks to be the same orange or close to it. I kinda like the gray though....hmm.

I drove 4 days to buy a truck and the only parts from the original truck will be the cab/cowl/hood. Welcome!

Still gathering some parts as I find them and waiting for warmer weather. I did pull the front clip and most of the interior.

First pic is some of the new panels that I'll be welding on. Second pic is a grill I found on CL for cheap.

Picked up a running Tahoe cheap. Not 100% sure I'll use it for this as it has tons of miles and a couple issues I'm not sure I want to deal with but it was cheap enough that I may use it to practice cutting on.

Started cutting up the Tahoe. Anyone need some body parts? :)

Re: New C10 build starting

So how did ‘practice cutting’ turn into literally ripping the whole body off the Tahoe haha

Just curious

Hey Mike, nice start on this truck. The sloped hood GMC's are one of my favorites. Just a heads up, you may already know this, but the grill you bought will work IF you remove the chrome piece rivetted to the top and replace it with a 67-68 gmc topbar. You will also need the 67-68 gmc hood latch.

Good luck, Rg

Ha, more a place to start I guess and that I may end up with a better drivetrain/frame. Many of the Tahoe's have the Auto style HVAC, this one is pretty basic so I hope it will integrate into my build easier seeing I plan to use the newer firewall and floor on the old cab. I'm selling some of the Tahoe parts so hopefully the cost of this Tahoe will be close to nothing.

Thank you. I didn't even know there was a difference in the hoods until I started this project. I really like the sloped hood. As for the riveted eyebrow, I already removed the top piece. My hood latch seems to work fine on the hood unless I'm missing something. Here's the fenders/hood and grill mocked up on the cab.

Re: New C10 build starting

I can't tell from the pics but is the top bar on the grill? The hood latch mounts to the top bar and a gmc hood latch jogs off to one side to clear the center bar. I'll get a pic for you soon.

Some pics, the top one is a 68 gmc, the center is a 70 gmc. The top bar on the 67-68 is flatter than the 69-72 gmc chrome piece, so the hood latches changed to make up for it. The bottom is a 70 chevrolet for reference, couldn't locate a 68 chevrolet, I know I have one somewhere...

MikeinNH 07-21-2021 09:29 PM

Re: New C10 build starting

Thanks for the info Roger. Yeah the top bar is removed. The hood won't sit flat with it on. We'll see about the hood latch, if I need to get one then that's ok. A new top bar is kinda pricey though but at least they are available new.

Aftermarket has really picked up the slack lately. When I started nothing was repo'd!
