Are sleepers still a thing?
 

Sunday I was getting drunk at my friends house, and we were talking about dream garbage.

And neither of us could recall a recent time when we saw one or heard of one being built.

It is enough for me to want to build a factory looking sbc with a very hot engine under the hood, and with quad exhaust. To keep the sound down, and flow high. All in a grandpa fresh C20.

BTW the arresting officer said there are laws with white claws.

Sleepers are still a thing. Having a 50 year old truck that will surprise some of the newer products is pretty fun.

Buddy of mine built a 2 door ford fairmont a few years ago that would raise some eyebrows and surprise the unknowing off the line. Built 5.0 liter, posi rear end, etc. all wrapped up in a plain tan exterior. The only real giveaway is if you noticed the tires. Wheels were rather plain black units but the tires were a good bit wider than what you would normally see on any car like that.

I have a 98 Wrangler with LS6/4L60E swapped in place of the original 4 cylinder. It has 4:10 gears and its not slow.

OK, my orange and white "farm truck" isn't as fast as the real "Farm Truck", but I take great pride in sitting at a traffic light with a ricer with a 4" fart can on it next to me, and getting a hole shot on them when the light turns green! I'll be across the intersection by the time they come buzzing by at 12,000 RPM. :lol:

I put dual 3" with Duramax mufflers and H pipe on my 383.

Mostly because I hate the fact that most cars and trucks these days are the opposite of sleepers. Stock engines with loud exhaust.

I got very deep into circle track stuff today looking for sleeper ideas. Since I really couldn't walk very well.

I found out about GM high rise iron Q-jet dual plane intake available on marine engines. They are a little expensive, but not to bad in the scheme of things. Especially if you want a bad ass stock looking motor. Still makes me mad I spent 40+ hours modifying a stock manifold myself. Where this one would probably need about 10-15 hours of my time.

Plus I found a guy who modifys stock manifolds for circle track, and he makes them awesome. Hint acid porting is a option along with cutting holes to further porting the inside. Although beyond my budget. Unless I go crazy.

My TJ is really a mall crawler and I would be the first admit it. It's my winter time snow plow for my drive way. In the summer it's our gravel road cruiser. We've had it on Hot Rod Power Tour.
It's quite fun to drive. Need to make sure as you punch it it's going a straight line.
Don't need low range for plowing. Kind of a sleeper.

I believe that I saw this Valiant at Pomona a few years back. The only give away is the rear tires. I remember it as being white. But the guy may have painted it. It sure looks like the same car and it's got California plates.

Have you ever experienced Farm Truck in person? It's loud. Obnoxiously loud. Large x huge rear tires. Large diameter exhaust tubing easily visible beneath the chassis. That all screams I'm not stock. While that doesn't automatically mean it will be 'Fastest Street Car' fast territory, most wouldn't assume it's slow.

A sleeper is just that. A very unassuming vehicle that will put the number down & then usually be asked to leave said track because it's lacking in safety equipment for its ability.

Of course they are . My next one is this one. 1962 Studebaker Lark going to put a supercharged slightly worked Studebaker V8 in it . It's a V8 now but I have a R3 Avanti motor minus the blower hooked to a super T10 that I picked up 20 years or so ago. It's already dual exhaust with turbo style mufflers . It gets up and goes now but with an added 180 hp its should really go .

Just need to add some stickey rear tires as it tends to brake loose if I dont feather the gas crappy picture but only ones on my tablet

This one goes low 12s in the quarter at 120 mph.

Set and re-set the B/Stock record five times in 1965.

Presently sitting in 1967 B/Modified Production trim with the addition of a 7" drag slick it will still go 12.40's easily.

This one is in the 9's at almost 140 mph.

Naturally aspirated, through the mufflers on a DOT tire. Licensed, insured and registered.

Legal to 10.00 (roll bar only, rather than a full roll cage), so I have had discussions with the tech people on a couple of occasions ;)

I avoided getting thrown out by making the bansai passes first, and then de-tuning to make my baseline comparisons.

Correct I could never call my Chevelle a sleeper . Last real sleeper I had was a 76 Ford Elite I put a mild 460 and a 4spd in it everything was a simple bolt up as the combo was available in the earlier grand torinos.
