After market hoods for 60's pick up

Thought some of you on here might get a kick out of this, as you may know there is not a huge amount of suppliers out there for race weight body parts for these 60's chevy trucks, one or two of them are around but on the other side of the states from me. I found a guy near me about 70 miles away, that fabbed a mold for my hood and bumper, i built this hood with a buddy of mine a little over 12 years ago and love it, so this hood is based on what i like and think looks good on these trucks.

My steal hood, hindges, springs and mounting hardware weighs 110 pounds, the new hood which he made od a mixture of carbon and glass weighs 28 pounds and will be held on with zues .

Here is a cpl pics of the hood and bumper. let me know what you guys think. Name of the place is Kantola Composites and is based out of Coca Lolla lake Idaho, his name is Arne and is a fantastic guy to deal with. phone is 208-290-2130

well being the first hood, making the mold and the hood being made mostly of carbon, the hood was close to 2000. the bumper was pritty much free. lol

I love the hood but "$2,000.00" is outrageous!

I've always wanted a hood like this but have been afraid to start cuttin mine up... but ya if the price is closer to a few hundred for the production pieces I'm in.

Hey Brian!
I think they both look good. I already have a 'glass hood, but have always been interested in a pair of bumpers. Does he have a mold for a rear bumper also? Cool that they're made from carbon fiber, also.
Did you decide to keep the truck?

That's cool that someone fairly local has done this. Looks like it is of real good quality. The pin on carbon fiber is great for those that are racing but I think if he were to offer this hood in straight fiberglass with provisions for standard hinges they would sell.

Re: After market hoods for 60's pick up

Yes 2000.00 is expensive but, him and i had about 160 hours into building the mold and corbon fiber is 60+ dollars a yard, plus other materials. we will have the same hood bolt on but in fiberglass for arount 650 or 750.00.

Yes i desided to keep the truck, i got it running really good in Boise, went a 1.37 60ft, and ran 9.78 at 139. and now maybe a set of aluminum heads and this bumper and hood is 120 pounds lighter then the steal stuff.

Glad to hear you decided to keep the truck! Congrats on getting it further into the 9s, also!! What kind of 1/8 mi. times are you running?

twotons 01-13-2010 09:13 PM

Re: After market hoods for 60's pick up

Re: After market hoods for 60's pick up

Wow, that's movin' for a 4000+ lb. truck!! I'm hoping for some mid-6 sec. 1/8 mi. passes out of mine on the spray on pump gas, but I don't know if my block would stand up to the amount of spray that it would take for mine to go low 6s.
Anyhow, keep up the good work!!

Re: After market hoods for 60's pick up

That would be a blast!! There are a few trucks in my area, but most of them are S-10s (nothing wrong with S-10s, just not my thing). It's too bad we live half of the country apart!!

Money isn't always the issue. Sometimes creating something that doesn't exist takes priority.

By the way, you did an excellent job setting up the 4.09 gears in my Dana 44 a few years ago. I wasted a lot of money at another shop before you did the install correctly. Thanks again!!

So are you going to cover up that beautiful carbon fiber finish with paint, or leave it natural?

Re: After market hoods for 60's pick up

Brian,
Did you figure out how you're going to fasten the hood to the truck? I had a pin-on hood on mine about 3 years ago and ended up replacing it with a bolt-on hood. I used dzus fasteners to mount mine, and I used 11 of them total. 3 in the front attached to aluminum brackets that I fabbed up that mounted to the rad. spt. side panels and the hood striker brkt., 3 along each side with dzus brackets mounted to the top edges of the fenders, and 2 in the rear on each side of the cowl scoop. I looked for pics of how I had all of the brackets mounted, but don't have any. I'd be happy to answer any questions about this, if you have any.
Be sure to post pics when you get the hood and bumper mounted. Good luck with it!!

Re: After market hoods for 60's pick up

Wow, that is nice. I could use one for my 65 step side. I just went with a back half, ladder bar, Dana 70, spool, cage, etc. putting it all in now. I’ve got fiberglass front fenders already but a lightweight hood would be another move in the right direction for sure.
