start the motor with the valve covers off.
*start with one *loosen it until it rattles *slowly tighten it until it stops rattleing *turn it 3/4 of a turn tighter *move to the next one |
the way 704X4 does it is how I do it too. I only tighten them a 1/2 turn though. With a stock engine, you do run a slight risk of screwing up your lifters, but with 1/2 past zero (zero being when the clatter stops) you have an engine that is a little more free to rev.
While running with the covers off, it's a good idea to have a fire ext handy. II had the oil ignite on the headers once. Scared the h*ll outa me. I didn't have one there, and literally passed out from blowing so hard. (on the flames you dirty minded ppl) http://67-72chevytrucks.com/board/ubbhtml/wink.gif ------------------ '69 G.M.C. 350/350. You can save yourself an oil mess,if you cut a "window' in an old set of covers to use for adjusting.....they make a nice conversation pc too. I couldnt even remember how many guys asked WTF do you use them for........69 longhorn
