Factory Wheel Color

I have a 70 GMC 1/2 ton 4x4. The truck is 100% stock. The truck has factory dog dish caps over black wheels. Did these trucks all come with black wheels, or did some feature white? I see a lot of white on the forum but I am not sure if that is just a popular choice, or factory correct. My truck is Medium Blue and I think the white wheels would set it off a lot more. I want them white, but I don't want to do that unless that was a factory color.

They were white originally... But I would still go with whatever looked good to me vs. what the factory did.

There are a lot of shades of white out desciptor there. Is there a color code or descriptor (like whimbelton white or yoke white, etc)?

Re: Factory Wheel Color

Wow, that is great since I prefer white. Still, I would be surprised if these wheels were painted black, the truck is so untouched and original I would think it came this way from the factory. Has anyone seen factory black wheels with dog dish caps they know came out of the factory?
I also like the question if there is a color code. Is it more of a cream or bright white?
Thanks for the help, time to get powder coating

Scratch some of the paint, and see if its white underneath

Replacement rims were probably black.

Re: Factory Wheel Color

I've seen black on SOME 67-8 with no caps (from the factory) and then white only on 69-72 w/caps. Black looks nice on some, color dependent. You'd certainly be making it correct if you made them white.

I bought new Chevy C10 step side trucks every year starting in '64 and they varied between white and black and I'm not sure what determined which one GM chose. It could have been as simple as which plant the truck was assembled in.

I always bought the plain vanilla 6 cylinder 3 speed but I think when they sold fancier trucks such as two tone paint they used the bottom paint color on the wheels.

Also think this black or white scheme may have gone away in about '73 when trucks almost ceased to be just trucks.

My truck has black rims.....they are not original though. I'm pretty sure dad (PO) painted them.

I think my truck looks a bit more aggressive with black rims but I really want to paint the rims white again.

musicman70,
I was just looking at original sales brochures and all the chevy's have white wheels yet all the GMC pics have silver wheels in 70. I am not saying that was the only way but It is interesting that they all had a silver wheel.

These trucks were just trucks until about '73 and the brochure was more of a suggestion rather than fact. It may have had more to do with where the truck was assembled and the time of year. In other words if they ran out of white wheels and black was available at the time, you got black.

If they are the original rims they should have a date code stamped on them.

Old thread here but it raises a question on my search. My 72' K10 came from the factory with black wheels and no hubcaps. This is confirmed by my original owner; the no hubcaps is is also noted on the factory build sheet. QUESTION, I will ask my the original owner this question (she may not recall this detail) but were the wheels a flat black or a gloss black? Thanks in advance for your help. Martin

Re: Factory Wheel Color

My 71 K10 had black rims with full wheel covers 15”. The wheels have the original GM sticker still attached on the inside. Maybe dog dish had white, and full wheel covers got black?

Good thread. Wasn't aware black wheels were a possibility. The white wheels were single stage gloss, I think, so I'd assume to other colors would be as well?

I was thinking gloss as well but wanted to confirm that. thx. Martin

Re: Factory Wheel Color

I thought that I read on here before that all 4 wheel drives were black. I believe that at least in 1968 the base wheel color was argent (silver).

1967 the wheels were black unless your truck was two-tone then the rims where body color (green, blue, yellow ect) with white painted caps.

1967 the wheels were white if the body was a solid color but had chrome caps. If two-tone the wheels were body color with chrome caps.
