Headliner Yes or No
 

I have built a highly optioned 70 swb 2wd truck and was wandering if I should go ahead and put the factory headliner in it. My interior is already in and complete. Should I or shouldn’t I go through the trouble of installing? If I do I will not cut out for the clip in the trim only drill for the 4 corner screws. Will this hold?

I did it that way in my last truck but I added 4 more screws and carefully counter sunk them so they looked like the other ones. I was told the clips allow the mouldings to move and not crack . I never had the truck long so I don't know if adding the screws made it easier for them to Crack. It worked but in my build I'm doing now I added the holes for the clips. It stays up tighter with the clips.

It will make the interior quieter if you install one.

If you drill for holes, I would use a short twist drill.;)
So it does not hit the top roof when the twist drill breaks thru.:uhmk:

A Jobbers drill is already short or you could cut one off and resharpen it.

Also, another option is a drill stop.

I always thought the headliner when done correctly (like original) brought a lot of class and style to the otherwise pedestrian roof. It's a great finishing piece that I only see on maybe 20% or less at shows and around town.

I like the headliners a lot. I always look at interiors to see if they have one, but they are few and far apart. I think it would look great.

I installed mine with out the trim using Velcro. My cab has all the original sheet metal and I didn't want to drill any extra holes. The head liner does help with the acoustics for better stereo sounds.

CST got you the headliner, among other parts. I took mine out because my FiL had put a zillion holes in it for various JC Whitney gewgaws. Haven't gotten around to getting a new one, yet.

I'm not sure it would hold. Mine was glued as well as having the trim on the edges holding it up.

I have glued mine up with no trim, using 3M windshield urethane. Used the same stuff to do all my side and tailgate trim. Works great and holds

So, taking what you did one step further. You could also glue the trim around the headliner, so you would not have to drill any holes at all. That is what I'm going to do when it comes time to install mine.

How did you drill? Do they need to be elongated?

My buddy and next door neighbor does upholstery work, when my '67 is ready for interior he will build the headliner from special PVC sheet that is used for upholstery in boats.
I made him a tool that puts a counter bore for the small high strength magnets, glue them into the PVC and they hold very well to the sheet metal.

In my latest build i took the original headliner roof panel out and installed it in my cab but i also made a fiberglass mould from it and can be used to make holes I another roof properly.

Would those of you who have roof liners mind posting pics? I am going to install a roof liner but want to see how they look and is the install just in the center of the roof?

This is all I have until it's all buttoned up in the truck. Will be painted red when finished.

We used 3M Industrial double sided tape and glued the headliner in place without the trim. This stuff is super strong and will hold the headliner much better than trim screws.

When using the tape be careful positioning it to the roof because once you touch it to the surface it will stick.
