Horn staying on

I replaced the turn signal switch on the 71, lights work like they should but the horn stays on. I left it disconnected from the half moon for now. Trace the wires but don't see where it could be grounded. With and without the steering wheel it stays on. Any help is very well appreciated.

You're on the right track, that wire is getting grounded somewhere, it's just a matter of where. If you haven't already disconnected the horn(s), do that so you can maintain your sanity. Connect a test light to the relay input so you can see when the ground is there and when it's not. You can also listen for the relay to click, but you might not know if it's activating or releasing.

I left it disconnected, it's a new aftermarket turn signal switch from Classic parts. I called them but they wanted me too self ot so they could test it but It would take a few weeks. The wires stays grounded, Thanks for the info, will give it a shot.

The horn relay ground wire goes to the steering column per black wire into the column and grounds when you touch the horn button. That black wire is grounding out inside the column somewhere.
Try taking the black wire out of the plastic horse shoe connector and see if it will blow with everything else hooked up. That will tell you it;s in the column. Here is the color wiring harness in the electrical section it's a life saver if you have electrical problems.

I left it disconnected from the horse shoe and the horn sound is off. Everything else works fine. So the black wire going to the turn signal switch is grounded somewhere, just not sure where. Appreciate all the help.

It goes straight up the column so it's easy to take back out and check it. I would be looking for any metal parts touching the steering shaft are arcing off something in the new switch.:chevy:
