Probably a lot cooler in Iowa than it is down here, but it does feel cooler outside and the humidity is gone. Feels like Fall.

It's supposed to be down in the 50s tonight. My big gum tree is the last of our trees to leaf out in the spring and the 1st to lose it's leaves in the fall. It's almost clean right now.
Say, what's in that shoop?

That's some nice-looking shoop! It cooled off just enough here that a couple days ago Mrs Stocker asked me to make beef stew. I'm no cook but it turned out pretty good. We went from mid-forties at night with daytime nineties to a warm 52 last night (cloud cover) and mid-seventies today. Forecast is calling for more stew before long. :)

That shoop is full of veggies. Tomatoes, green peas, taters, carrots, okra, 3 ears of corn I cut off fresh, one jalapeño, one yellow squash, one zucchini, and one big turnip. Justin Wilson always said you just don’t have soup without it’s got a turnip in it. I put a can of chicken broth and the rest water. Browned about a pound & a half of burger meat and put it in last. Simmered about two hours and it was on! Not much left of it now.

Lost my mom in June to a brain aneurysm and we, me and my family, have taken over feeding my dad, known to all of them as Papaw. He mentioned it was almost cool enough for soup so I made him some tonight. Surprised him with it. He ate three bowls. Mom would be happy. :)

Thanks. It was very good if I do say so myself. A good thick hearty beef stew is hard to beat too.....with some cornbread......get on out of my way!

Good and cool here lately. Especially tonight. The weatherman said, "Not quite cold enough for frost, but..."., and I thought, "FROST???". It was just a couple weeks ago I was sweating standing still... 90*. The flowers in the window boxes got toasted in the heat wave we had and I wasn't ready to be looking at dead flowers just yet. So just this week I planted them again. I never do fall planting, but Southern States, our farm co-op, had all them purdy flowers out front and it got me buyin' and plantin'. I just planted grass after doing some groundwork figuring I better hurry up before it's too late. Our frost date is a month from now, but I dunno...

I always thought it was funny how people think of soup as a cold weather food. It's true being a liquid it is great for warming you up. But it's also a perfect food for hot weather, being easier to digest. It's not like we don't eat hot food all summer. In fact, we eat some mighty filling food off the grille... steak, burgers, ribs, etc. A bowl of soup can be a meal and it's eat and keep on moving.

I'll say one thing, this summer went fast! I know some pleasant warm days are ahead, yet. But golly it sure did cool off fast around here

Looks good, whats the ingredients? I've been living on fast food since my wife left but I can cook a bit. 40lbs I've gained since I've been responsible for feeding myself.

Get yourself a crock pot. You can find any recipe you can imagine online, just Google what comes to mind. The beauty of a crock pot, especially for a single guy, is you toss in the ingredients in the morning and come home to food ready to eat! I've been using the one my wife was kind enough to leave me for years. I recently took a load to Goodwill and went in to browse around. I found and bought a smaller round crock pot that looked brand new for $10. Not sure what they cost new, but I've been using that one now for smaller batch foods. Just did collard greens yesterday... tender and flavorful (seasoned). The nice thing about shoop (or big batch of anything) is you can freeze the leftovers to thaw out another day for a microwave ready meal in 10 minutes.

Now I am ready to make a pot of shoop!

When we were kids my mom would sometimes make something we called "stoup" -- basic ingredients of stew, but the broth was thin like soup.
I think the meat was oxtail, probably because it was cheap. I saw some in a store a few years ago and it's not cheap anymore.

Just like Brisket used to be cheap but as soon everybody started smoking them they got expensive....last one I bought was about $40

Wife put a crockpot on mid morning. Her version of shoop I guess. House smells great. Gonna sit down and eat as much as I can lol. She bought some hard rolls too. Lots of butter and I dip it in the soup.

I'm in denial. Just dressing warmer. 37 last night, barely into the low 60s late today, 30s again tonight, about 70 tomorrow. I dunno, might want to flick a baseboard on tonight. I don't burn wood at the early end of heating season. Too much heat in this place. Looks like upper-70s to 80/upper 50s to low 60s mid-week through the weekend, so back to more normal temps... no need for heat. I think it's time to pack the shorts away. It's flannel in the morning/t-shirt weather now. And my appetite has increased for sure. I always connected it with cooler weather instinct. But this year I noticed it increasing before it cooled off. Shorter days I'm sure are another trigger on the instincts. I'm ready for shum shoop!

Boog - would that gum be a black gum (black tupelo)? The sweetgums still have leaves (none in my yard, cut them all down) but I do have one black gum left and it's just about leafless. I had two but one large one was dead this spring so it got cut. They make the small black berries the birds and squirrels seem to like.

The soup looks great and makes me think about it as well. Boog mentioned cornbread. I get stone ground, yellow cornmeal from War Eagle Mill in northwest Arkansas every year for just that purpose.

I didn't know that mill was still working. Good deal. I could eat a pan full of corn bread anytime. Iron skillet of course.
I've been told my tree is a black gum. It does not produce anything. It's got a real nice shape, I think post card worthy. I'll have to snap a pic when it's all leafed out. Right now it's looking scraggly. The Bradford pears will shed their leaves later on. Fall is just around the corner.
