On/Off Road Racing

Was going through some old pictures and found some of my old Rally car racing I did when I was in Japan. This would have been late 70's early 80s. Cars I ran were a Datsun (Nissan) Sunny (B110 in states I think) and Datsun (Nissan) Cherry (B210 in states). We had a time trial course on the Air Force base where these were taken. Did a good bit of on/off road rally stuff in the local mountains where I was at in northern Japan. Any you folks do any sort of on and off road racing?

Bill,, did not know this about you ..bet that was a lot of fun,,, this reminds me of back when I bought a 1974 Datsun station wagon 210 (ugly burnt orange color) the foot peddles and gas peddle were so small and close together that I had a hard time with big work shoes driving it ..let alone racing in it ... did they race station wagons also ? Thx for sharing this with us .. tell us more ..trophies and all..

A couple of my high school buds and I bought an old Corvair and off roaded it one summer if that counts. I think we gave $30 for it. It drank more oil than gas and we had an absolute blast with it. Something like this.

GoPappa....The Subaru wagons with 4wd were somewhat popular. Not as much since they were new and expensive at that time. The Sunny (and a newer one I can't find pics of) were modified class and WAY more expensive thaan the 2 stock class Cherry's , maybe $100 investment. They would no longer pass vehicle inspections, so they got converted to "race" cars. They were just fun.

Boog....that reminds me of a bug I had in highschool. Went great as long as you were going straight. Trying to turn....well that was a event of its own.

The old yellow Cherry is the only one I ever trophied in, a 2nd place. I also killed it that day as I bent/twisted the freame coming off a jump. Some how I still crossed the finish line with it twisted on the passenger's (left) side. Everything else I was just short of getting a trophy, but I sure had fun.

After my soon-to-be wife wrecked her VW bug, we took off the doors and the remaining glass and drove it as a dune buggy on forest service roads the rest of that summer. We weren't racing anyone but we sure drove it kind of crazy because after all we couldn't hurt it much

I did have a hobby in the dirt!
Did Demo Derby for about 10 years.

It was great fun, and kind of consumed my automotive interests for a time.

Greg58, I did demo derby once when I was 16. I did not do good. I used the front to much to beat on the other folks, so I didn't hold out very long. It was different and fun though.

Me too. but I did a lot more of the figure 8 races than the conventional derbies. I did win the main of this conventional 4cyl derby back in 2012 after I got rolled over. I won a ton of the figure 8’s over a 8-10 year period.

The theme for this one was finding Nemo. Got an extra $100 for the fan vote, then as I said won the whole thing in the end.

Here’s one from 2013 or so in a figure 8. That black Saturn #13 was fast, I won 2 heats and the main in that one.
