Wizit's bagged 60 GMC build V2.0

Sooooo... years ago I started this thread (http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/member.php?u=156411) which is now defunct thanks to photobucket.

Well, life got in the way and I have now built a new house with a shop and am back to working on this truck. Plans have changed along the way from a fairly budget build to something a little wild.

Welcome to the show!

The day I brought the truck home in May 2015

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...eafbac50_b.jpg

I built a pretty run of the mill bagged setup. pancaked crossmember, trailing arms, etc.

And heres how shes sitting now. Just a cab in the shop patiently waiting for whats to come.

Every aspect of the truck from here on out will be designed in Solidworks in my free time(which unfortunately theres not much of!)

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...a18bcab0_b.jpg

I have a lot of preliminary models of components complete. The only design actually complete is the front suspension and crossmember design.
I spent months dialing in the suspension geometry based on my knowledge from the off-road world and a ton of reading i have done over the past couple years.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...e6a6cb2b_b.jpg

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...1169de2d_b.jpg

The final design ended up with 2 degrees of camber change and zero toe change throughout the suspensions travel.

I utilized off the shelf Joes Racing upper a-arms. they are very affordable units available in basically any length you may need and utilize k772 balljoints.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...8fbce371_b.jpg

The lower arms utilize Rydman Ranch balljoint cups and Speedway bushings.

The steering rack is a Mustang II unit.

Just how low can you go?

Photophukit really screwed it up for many of us.

Re: Wizit's bagged 60 GMC build V2.0

I began to gather parts and build components to mock up the front suspension to verify everything cycles as it should.

I sent the crossmember files to the plasma to be cut and got to work on the other parts.

Designed and cut a jig to build the lower arms.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...2ec60f06_c.jpg

I assembled one side of the suspension with a mockup steering rack/tie rods and was happy to find that everything cycles as it should.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...6af55f2d_c.jpg

Both sides assembled. Note that the crossmember is missing a few pieces that cannot be tack welded in place until some internal welding is completed.

Looks good. What lower arms are you using? From your image above looks to be a turbo LS going in?

I designed and built the lower arms. 1.25" Dom tube, Rydman Ranch balljoint cups and speedway bushings and tube inserts.

It will be LS powered and current plan is twin hx35 turbos that I have but that may change. I'm undecided at this point.

Ive been spending some time chatting with the guys over at SS Chassis Worx getting the frame rails dialed in to a design I like and that will work with their tooling.

Heres a look at a few of the iterations that have come about. The bottom one is the latest and Im pretty happy with it!

Nice work so far! I would really like to learn how to use Solidworks, but don't want to spend the money on a new computer..

Tuned in for the rest of journey!

I paid the invoice to SS Chassis Worx for the framerails on Thursday, they sent me this pic of the completed rails Friday, and they shipped out Monday. Thats an impressive turnaround! :metal:

Man that is quick! If you don't mind me asking, how much did the rails set you back?

Their base price on frame rails is $900 shipped. Mine were $975 shipped due to being a little longer than the base price ones.

I got quotes from every where that was willing to build them for me and they were all in the 950-1300 price range not including shipping which was another 200-300 in most cases.

the the SS Chassis Worx guys were ~200 cheaper than the next closest competitor.

I found some time last night to work on the rear suspension. The geometry is good and locked in.

Im not completely happy with the crossmember yet. I will continue to work on it.

For my birthday my wife paid Rendered Rides to do some renderings of my vision of the finished truck.
It was really fun working with the artist and picking out every little detail!

I have a 3'x4' print of the first one on the way to hang in the shop.

Perfect gift that rendering.

And you have one of my favourite colours/colors

My ex wife (still a good friend) did me a 4x5 foot canvas print of my truck in black and white in an industrial setting with just the red picked out. It lives in my study on the wall.

I received my 36x48 print and built a quick frame for it. just need to find a spot in the shop to hang it now!

While waiting for the frame rails to arrive I have spent my evenings designing and building a frame jig and associated jigs to help locate and hold the frame rails and rear axle.

The frame rails should hopefully be here by the end of the week!

Your jig is nicer than many of the trucks Ive seen built.
