saddle tanks on a 1972 jimmy?
Were saddle gas tanks a dealer installed option on the blazers and jimmys??
Thanks |
Re: saddle tanks on a 1972 jimmy?
Hickey an aftermarket company had 16 gallon tanks that were mounted inside the blazer behind the rear seat. The fit nicely around the wheelwell but necessitated holes in the quarter panels to fill
Up. Looking for a driver side one or Both. |

The Jimmy that I am looking at has the tanks mounted between the frame rails and the sheet metal of the body like some of the trucks have them mounted. It looks like a very pro job that was done so just wondering if this was something that maybe a dealer installed??

Re: saddle tanks on a 1972 jimmy?
As far as I know, that is not a dealer option. It was an aftermarket add-on. The unfortunate aspect of these tanks is that they are located directly beneath the door openings. The original torsion boxes had to be cut out in order to install the tanks in their place. Great if you need all that gas and NEVER take the hard top off. Bad if you want to take the hard top off, as the tub will now want to sag through the door openings without the added support from the torsion boxes. New torsion boxes are available, so you could easily get rid of the saddle tanks and restore the structural integrity of the Blazer tub.

Thanks for the info I just happen to have a set of boxes from a parts blazer. I might keep the extra gas tanks in it if they are in good shape.
Thanks again, Joe |

My story, I was just driving down the road in Blanco, TX, happened to see it sitting at small garage with a for sale sign in the window. About half an hour later I had written a check for $8,250 and was driving it home. The white with saddle interior had me from the beginning. Please let me know where you found it if you don't pick it up. I'd like a chance to have it back again someday! |

That pic is old too, from when I owned this truck here in Texas back in the early 2000's.

The pic of that blazer was on the internet but it is just like one I bought in eastern Washington recently. The one I bought was dark green. I am getting ready to start the process of restoring it. It's a Jimmy and the saddle tanks are going to go and I'll put the rocker boxes back in place.

Ah, ok. Sounds like a decent project ahead.
