67 K20 4x4

Ok last night I got tired of looking at my truck just sitting there waiting for me to start my build so I did it I started. Its a 67 small window K 20. Some of you probably saw it in another post but let me recap. I got it from my father in law in Montana. His dad bought it new, used it for a ranch truck until 2002. Had a very rough life. Floor is rusted out and all the metal is dented and creased. I put a new timing chain in it 3 years ago, drove it to get firewood for a year or two, then drove it to Idaho when we moved back here in 2004. It sat in my driveway since then waiting for me.

A couple weeks ago I bought the body off of a 69 lwb c 10. I love the small window and the hood of the 67, so I will keep them, but They are in such bad shape I will not be putting them on the truck right away. The 69 is completely straight so I will sand it all down and paint it and turn my 67 into a 69. When I get the small window cab rust free and welded back together I will but it back on with a 67 hood and make it back into a 67.

Last night I took off the 17" split rims, broke them down sanded and painted them black like original, took the bed back off, and wire brushed the frame until the wee hours. Also drained the rear end and refilled and resealed it. Gears look good, very low geared, 4:10's maybe 4:50's ot sure.

This is turning into a novel, sorry.

Let me know what you guys think. I am sure I will be asking lots of questions.

No more progress as of today. Been working until late. Will try to pull out 327 and clean engine bay this weekend. Hopefully make it ready for the 396. In the next couple of weeks.

I found a 396 last night. What do i need to do to put a 396 into a 67 4x4 frame with a 69 cab. SM420 tranny w/ 205 transfer?? Original engine was 327. After I get the floors in the original 67 cab I will put it back in, but that will be in a few years. Any suggestions. The 396 has headers, do I need to change those back to manifolds to make it fit. I'm new to chevy engine swaps. All I've done is ford engine swaps:crazy:

Re: 67 K20 4x4

Its been a couple of weeks, but I got the truck into our shop yesterday. Had to push it in. Learned a lesson. Day after Thanksgiving I steam cleaned the grime off the engine. Started the truck up, ran bad for a few minutes, then was fine. I let it sit until yesterday, outside. I guess I didn't get all the moisture out of the distributor because she wouldn't start. I finally got mad and pushed it inside, after an hour in the heated shop, she dried out and fired. After all that, I got the fenders off, the front clip off, both bumpers, and the cab loose. Today I plan on taking the cab off, then pulling out the 327. Next week we are sandblasting some of our equipment, so after work I will try to sandblast the frame. Try and maybe get some more done on it.

Enjoy your build. I started last January and I should have the truck back from paint in the next month or so. I have already decided to do the body work myslef next time. It takes too long when you take it somewhere even when it is your brothers father-in-law.

Got some more done last night. Cab is unbolted, seat and fuel tank, steering column, radiator support, radiator is all taken off. Need to get a trailer to set cab on, so I can take it out of the shop and into storage. Almost ready to pull engine and start cleaning up the frame.

Cab is off, motor is pulled, frame is partially cleaned and primered. This is going to be a long project. After christmas will try to hit it hard. Need to get 396 into shop and ready. Will get pics when I remember to bring camera to shop.

Finally got some stuff done. Frame is painted except for the spot where the steering box goes. Got a power steering pump and box today. Scored it from my buddy who wrecked his 72 cheyanne 3 years ago. Told me to give him $100 and take what I needed. Needed to still plate the frame where the old box sat, cracked a little bit. the old 327 has new valve cover gaskets and oil pan gaskets. Looked at the cylinders from the bottom end, couldn't tell much, but looked ok. Still has good compression. It is ready to swap for the 396. Hopefully will get that done 1st weekend in February when i get back from Montana. Still sanding and prepping the body parts. Will take some pics tommorrow of the frame and various stuff.
