62 V8 starter
I’m trying to find the correct starter for the 60-62 V8 bell housing. I purchased one off Rock auto but it’s doesn’t fit. I had the grind down the inside of the bell housing for it to clear and fit right. It engages the flywheel but won’t retract after power is disengaged. Just wondering if it’s a bad starter or is the clearance off? Does anyone have the right part number for the correct one?

Is it for an automatic or manual trans?

Re: 62 V8 starter
I think you need a starter with a cast iron nose cone - not the more common alloy/aluminum. I have a 5.7 Vortec with the 62 V-8 bellhousing and use a cast iron nose starter that mounts to the block. I have a 3 speed manual transmission and a 168 tooth flywheel. I think you can swap noses between starters so if you have a starter repair shop, they may be able to convert yours. I'm pretty sure it is the same if you are bolting the starter to the bellhousing - you need the "pointy", narrower cast iron nose. Good luck!

Re: 62 V8 starter
Do you have clearance between the starter gear and the flywheel? I don’t remember spec, but there was a trick involving the right size drill bit to confirm sufficient gap. You may need to shim the starter. Does the gear return ok when starter is not installed ?

Re: 62 V8 starter
I used a starter like this https://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS+Performa...hoCPyoQAvD_BwE it fit my cast iron bell housing and bolted to my block. I did have to do a minor mod to my tin flywhell cover but it was no biggie.
