Any diesel savvy members?
 

So, my nephew has this 2015 Duramax 6.6 crew cab. It is giving him some issues with the DEF system. Speed is about to be limited in another 55 miles or so. Dealership claims it's an actuator in the exhaust system of some sort. No further details were given. I suggested he deletes that crap and buy a tune to match but that would void his warranty. It cannot be hidden. The dealership will remove ECM and send it off to Chevrolet for dissection. They find traces of the tune and warranty is no more.

Question:

Is it possible to aquire another ECM, program it for the vehicle it's going in, tune it and swap for the factory ECM while it's stored safely?

Seriously

The dealer repairs costs 100'$ and the tune will fix these issues.

I’m not really up on the newest duramax trucks, but I’m pretty sure no you cannot swap ECMs out to avoid getting caught. I feel like I remember at some point Gm put something in the ecm that they could tell if it had been removed- I don’t remember what.

If the dealer is fixing for free under warranty then get it repaired. If it’s going to cost any money, save it and get a tune to delete. Isn’t the power train warranty 5/100k? He’s getting to the end of his 5 years anyway

That's the most sensible thing to do but everybody wants the deletes and tunes now. The only drawback is that he can't drive his expensive diesel because GM won't have the part he needs for another 3 months! I like my OBDI cars a bit more now, LOL.

You can't fool GM anymore, the torque values are stored in the tcm and they'll know if it's more than stock power. If you swap the Tcm and Ecm, then the regen count will be off and they'll know..

Tell him to delete it and dont look back.
Or just keep taking it to the dealership and not be able to use his truck.

hmmm, 400hp not cuttin' it :lol:

unless he's prepared to own it outright with no warranty of any kind, I suggest he leaves it alone..

if he has a lot of money to burn then by all means, strip it, tune it, roll coal :rolleyes:, etc. however he wants to beat on it..

as far as the current issue, what's the problem taking it to the dealer for warranty repairs?

the fed emissions warranty should be covering that even if he has no other warranties..

his dealer's charging $100s + waiting 3 months for parts for a 2015 model? please share p/n's, that sounds like BS..

He likes it just fine WHEN HE CAN DRIVE IT. It just stinks he has to wait in line for an issue that has been around since it's conception in 2011. He is waiting. That was the last thing he said when I talked to him.

being a diesel driver...i always try to sway towards STOCK or now days tuned with good emissions manners....IT ALWAYS let me down.

CAll NICK ( Duramax Tuner) or Kory Willis ( PPEI), have it tuned to a safe manner and let it eat.

i really like what Nick does, But Kory Being local to me...
