What gets water spots off windshield

I've tried mild cleaners, fast reducer, steel wool soaked in reducer, nothing so far has even touched them. I'm not sure if they are water spots or chemical spots? maybe even calcium hardend water. I do have well water not city. Whatever they are I know they're tough son a guns. I have just about give up hope of getting them off any ideas???????

Try some Bon ami and water and scrub in a circular fashion without exerting too much pressure. Kinda like waxing the glass.

i bought a 2001 yukon when it was about a year old with this problem on all the glass, and like you i went through a ton of products that claimed to remove water spots. i even bought the glass buffing kit for spots and scratches from the Eastwood Company and that did'nt work either. i finally threw caution to the wind and cracked open my tub of mothers mag and aluminum polish and the results were excellent, but was also a lot of work since i did it by hand (do you realize much glass a yukon has). this stuff is great for a lot of things including polishing unpainted plastic parts, hard rubber that has faded, dash bezels, etc, etc,........

hey, is'nt this site great. you can ask a question and get an answer without someone trying to sell you something (that's probably not what you need anyway).

i guarantee you'll get results, and if you can't find mothers, you can use blue coral or a few others on the market for aluminum. good luck

Before I retired (against my will), I worked for Alcoa, where we created chemicals from alumina. The by-products inevitably ended up on windshields as well as the rest of the vehicle. It was an alkaline-based product, so it would leave spots on everything.

So, I decided to put some Rain-X on my windshield one day and it was only after many failures that I finally hit on what worked for me.

First, clean the windshield with any good window cleaner. Then, go over the entire surface with some 0000 steel wool (4-aught). Then, go over the windshield with window cleaner, again. Then, the steel wool. After that, you good to go to put some Rain-X on it. Hopefully, after you get the Rain-X on the glass, you won't see any more water spots, regardless of the chemistry of the water (hard, soft, whatever).

I've had well water that was sweet and pure. Just a couple hundred feet away was some of the foulest well water you could ask to avoid.....plenty of sulphur and iron, so stink it did. I didn't wash my car with it. But, calcium is an alkaline, so maybe some CLR used sparingly, will help you get rid of the spots. Good luck.

This is great... I was getting ready to ask this question. I was polishing some chrome on the Big Banana (my daughter's name for the yellow suburban), and when I got to the mirrors I noticed some water spots on the mirror side. I wiped it down with my rag full of chrome polish and it came right off! I didn't even use much pressure! I'll give the bonami a try on alllll that glass, but if it doesn't work I'll use the old Napa chome polish;)

If it's water spots, use vinegar. If you need to, put some on a rag and leave it on the spots to soak. Should come right off without abrasives.

Years ago there was a product called "Glass-wax" that was supposed to work wonders.... I've never been able to find any though...

Rain-x will keep it from coming back, as the water won't stay on the glass long enough to dry.

Great post!

After reading this thread, I tried my California Customs aluminum rim polish on my rear slider. It worked awesome!!!!!. Got rid of most of the water spots. I need to do it once more.

When I owned a detail shop a few years back an employee of mine showed me a trick that worked 100% after he washed the car (we were in a shaded area) and while the car was still wet he used P&S wire wheel cleaner (it is acid based so be careful) sprayed it on and let it set for only 10 secs (do not let it set no longer then that) on a wet windshield hit with the ultra fine steel wool and viola' gone I mean every one the first time
